OKLAHOMA GEOLOGICAL FOUNDATION 2011 ANNUAL REPORT OTheKLAHOMA GEOLOGICAL 2011 ANNUAL REPORT FOUNDATION Students Teachers Schools

OurWhat an Chairman’sexciting year this has been forMessage the Foundation. This past year was one of challenges, continued growth, and accomplishments. To address these challenges, the Directors voted enthusiastically to change the name of the Foundation from the City Geological Foundation to the Oklahoma Geological Foundation. Our name change will strengthen our resolve and commitment to better serve all students, teachers and schools throughout the state of Oklahoma. The Foundation has a strong team of enthusiastic and talented leaders who are committed to promoting earth science and the study of geology in our schools. Our main focus is directed toward the students and educators who are involved in these programs. Throughout this Annual Report and in the additional materials that you will receive during the remainder of the year, you will see this theme of commitment and leadership from the Board of Directors repeated time after time. With a long-term perspective always in mind, together we can create a stronger and better education for students of all ages. In brief, the Foundation’s net asset value continued to increase through wonderful gifts from our donors, coupled with the Board’s diligent and effective investment management. Even as assets grew, the Foundation was still able to more than double its annual disbursements in 2010 from those made in 2009. This fact alone makes 2010 a huge success. New endowments were also established in 2010 and are described in more detail within this Report. As announced last year, the Foundation is supporting the Geological Society and the 2011 AAPG Mid-Continent Section Meeting in early October of this year. Most of the Directors are involved in some way to help produce one of the best Meetings ever. Our Annual Awards Banquet, Legends’ Dinner, and Directors’ Christmas Reception continue to grow in size and importance and are always well-attended highlights of the year. Over the past year, as in prior years, we were able to provide benefits to many students, teachers, and schools in Oklahoma. In the case of some of our recipients, the financial assistance provided by the Foundation was their sole source of support and allowed them to keep pursuing their dreams. These results are made possible only from the generosity of our many past and current donors. Whether your gifts help to energize the next generation of leaders, promote earth science and geological studies, support the work of our educators, or simply help to fulfill the dreams of our students and teachers, your commitment to the mission and vision of the Oklahoma Geological Foundation truly does make a difference. In a letter to the Foundation, one of last year’s endowment recipients stated, “I look forward to one day being able to support young geoscience majors as the Foundation has done for me because it truly does make a difference.” This Annual Report is offered in deepest gratitude and recognition of your support. Warm personal regards,

1 Thomas C. Cronin, Chairman Our Mission & Vision Statements The Mission of the Oklahoma Geological Foundation is to support, exclusively within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3),Our Mission charitable, scientific, literary and educational activities with the primary emphasis in the science of geology and related fields.

Since Foundation’s founding in 1993, funding programs in science education have always been of a high priority. TheOur Founding Vision Directors envisioned the Foundation as a primary funding source that directly benefits numerous programs for students, teachers and schools that are involved in the earth sciences.

With those funding objectives in mind, the Foundation has annually provided scholarships, awards and grants throughout Oklahoma to students enrolled in elementary and high schools and undergraduate and graduate programs in college; along with many programs that support teachers and educational institutions.

The initial programs of the Foundation, such as the Frederick H. and Lois M. Kate Endowment, the Suzanne Takken Memorial Fund, and the Science Fair Awards have exemplified the goals and objectives of our Charter Members.

In 2006, the Foundation broadened its vision with the addition of four new programs. Focusing on elementary and secondary schools, the Excellence in Earth Science Education Awards (EESE), the Kate Excellence in Earth Science Education Award, and the Beth Cronin Elementary School Endowment The Foundation provides support to programs geared were created to foster awareness and to encourage to students of all ages but will be concentrating on participation in earth science programs for students, Programs for younger students in the future. teachers and schools. With continuing education and petroleum geology as its focus, the Kenneth Stewart Cronin Lecture Series was the fourth program established in 2006. The Lecture Series was initiated to benefit the members of the Oklahoma Geological Society, students, and local professionals. In 2007, the Foundation added a new program for college students - the Herbert G. and Shirley A. Davis Oklahoma State University Scholarship.

In 2008, the Philip Boyle Foundation and the Oklahoma Geological Foundation Elementary and Secondary School Endowment, and the John Gatchell Earth Science Teaching Endowment were established. The focus of these programs was on elementary and secondary education.

In 2010, the Foundation established the Charles E. Branham Geological Library Endowment, which will support libraries and programs in elementary and secondary schools, as well as the Society’s Library. The Foundation also joined with the Oklahoma Geological Survey and to provide supplemental teaching resources to Oklahoma students in grades 7 through 12 with The Oklahoman’s “Newspapers in Education” program. It’s an exciting program whereby each October, in conjunction with Earth Science Week, lesson plans on subjects concerning the science of geology, energy and other earth science issues. More than 700 schools and 15,000 students will be exposed to this program on an annual basis.

The Directors are committed to the growth of the Foundation. By expanding traditional programs and establishing new ones, we are always mindful of the mission of the Foundation and the importance our programs have to students, teachers and schools in our communities. 2 OTheKLAHOMA GEOLOGICAL 2011 ANNUAL REPORT FOUNDATION Students Teachers Schools
