LEADING BY EXAMPLE

By Catherine Rutter Athletic Media Relations Assistant

Senior Matt Bhaya has always been a leader. He is a two-year captain for the Crusaders, continually working on his leadership skills on and off the field. Bhaya’s past also suggests that strong leadership skills are in his blood. One example is in fifth grade, when he decided to organize a sports equipment drive. His fifth grade teacher wanted the students to make up a project outside of the classroom based upon something the students were passionate about. “I was mainly only passionate about sports so I decided to do a sports equipment drive for peo- ple without basic sports equipment, and it just stuck with me until I graduated high school,” said Bhaya. Bhaya’s hometown of Haddonfield, N.J., is just 10 minutes away from Camden, where he decided to focus his efforts. “The kids from my town were very fortunate and had extra gear and equipment, so it made sense to donate the excess equipment to kids who weren’t as fortunate,” said Bhaya. He had no idea that the drive would be such a success at the time of its birth. “As the years went on, we ended up working directly with organizations such as the Little League and the youth soccer league in Camden, and the whole project became very successful.” Although Bhaya had started it in just fifth grade, he felt the need to continue the drive all throughout high school. “It was one of those things that once you get it started, it was really easy to keep it going,” he said. One of Bhaya’s fondest memories of the drive is fitting the kids for soccer cleats. “A lot of the kids didn’t have proper soccer cleats, just old sneakers or overly used unfitting cleats, so bringing the cleats year to year was so rewarding,” said Bhaya. “The kids would line up and we would size them and they would walk away so happy. The parents would be digging into their pockets trying to pay us back somehow, but at the end of the day it really was the least we could do.” Bhaya is a natural born leader who has looked to others for inspiration at times. An influential football player in Bhaya’s life that lit the path for him to become a pas- sionate player was his brother Philip who played four years of football at Princeton. MATT “I’ve always looked up to my brother, and he kind of influenced me to play football BHAYA from the beginning,” said Bhaya. “Since he is two years older, we played high school football together, so he had a big impact on my game in that way too.” He also pointed to Tommy Mannix, a senior on the football team when Bhaya was a freshman, as an influential player for him. “Tommy played safety when I was a season, he was ranked fifth on the team with 40 total tackles including 33 solo stops, freshman and he really taught me how to play the position to the best of my ability,” including a team-leading and season-high 12 tackles and one pass breakup at Colgate. said Bhaya. “He also taught me what it was like to be a leader at Holy Cross and really On top of being selected to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Bhaya was se- showed me what Holy Cross was all about. You know that your see in Matt this year and last year, compared to maybe his freshman year, is he knows classmates are working so hard for you to get better, because you are working so hard and understands the defense inside and out,” said head coach Tom Gilmore. “That not for them to get better as well.” only helps him play, but it helps him lead the other guys on the field.” Bhaya’s parents also have always been a big support system for him as a player. Bhaya’s leadership skills now extend past sports, and looking to his future, he His parents have not missed a game since he can remember. “It really is crazy that my is interested in working in law enforcement. “Two summers ago, I was with the U.S. parents have been to every game, home and away,” Bhaya said. “It’s even more crazy Marshals in Camden, and this summer I was with the DEA here in Worcester,” he said. because when my brother played at Princeton, my parents would split up and they “Both places gave me a good idea of what I want to be doing in my future and added would switch whose game they went to every other week so they haven’t missed a to my interest.” The officers that Bhaya worked under showed him what it takes to be game all four years.” Their constant support has helped Bhaya focus on his game and in law enforcement and spiked his interest in the field both summers.
