STAFF WRITER Date: Nov 28, 1991 Section: NEWS ACCUSED MAN BATTLES QUEENS DA ‘POLITICS’ On July 10, 1990, a car driven by Eric Collins veered out of control in Rosedale, Queens, jumped a sidewalk and killed two children. After inspecting the scene at the intersection of Hook Creek Boulevard and 145th Street, as well as the car, police investigators and prosecutors suggested Collins had run a stop sign - a moving viola- tion - but cleared him of any criminal wrongdoing. But two months later, without further investigation, the Queens district attorney’s office took the case to a grand jury, which indicted Collins on charges of assault and reckless endangerment. If he is convicted, he faces three to seven years in jail. His trial is scheduled to begin this week. The tragedy that took the lives of two children was similar to that of Aug. 19 this year, when 7- year-old Gavin Cato was killed by a car that veered out of control and struck him as he played on a Crown Heights sidewalk. Gavin’s death sparked a firestorm of protests and three days of rioting in Crown Heights, but a grand jury found that the driver, Yosef Lifsh, had not committed a crime. Collins, 22, who works as an assistant analyst for Shearson Lehman Brothers, says his car mal- functioned, causing him to lose control. He says he believes the indictment is a result of politics and not justice. “It was a terrible accident, but there was no criminal intent,” Collins said.

Vice President BIA Financial Network Introduction. This Report is submitted by Mark R. Fratrik, Ph. D., Vice President, BIA Financial Network. BIA Financial Network (BIAfn) is a financial and strategic consulting firm specializing in the media and communications industries. A copy of Dr. Fratrik’s vitae is attached at the end of this report, establishing his qualifications to collect and evaluate media advertising data, as well as the presence of media outlets in the New York DMA. On behalf of Station WPIX, New York City, New York (“WPIX”) and its parent, Tribune Company (“Tribune”), we are providing an analysis of the traditional media in the New York DMA with respect to the advertising revenue share and concentration of the New York media marketplace. We have looked specifically at the combination of WPIX and Newsday, a daily newspaper published in New York (“Newsday” together with WPIX, the “Tribune Properties”).1 In this Report, we compare estimated revenue shares of the Tribune Properties in the New York DMA with other media properties in the New York DMA. We also compare the revenue shares of the Tribune Properties in the New York DMA with the estimated revenue shares of the market revenue leaders in other top 10 DMAs in the United States2, and the average of the market revenue leaders in the nation as a whole. We also assess concentration in the New York DMA, and compare that level of concentration to the average of the top 10 DMAs, and the average concentration of all traditional media markets in the nation.

Destefano [email protected] April 1, 2007 New York City federal prosecutors, wrestling with complex white collar crime and death penalty prosecutions that consume staffing and investigative resources, are bringing significantly fewer cases overall in the past year, according to government data. Department of Justice data examined by Newsday show that prosecutions started by federal prosecutors in Manhattan dropped 32 percent between Fiscal Year 2005 and Fiscal Year 2006. Large drops were seen in narcotics and organized crime prosecutions while lesser dips occured in white collar, immigration and weapons cases. The drop in prosecutions wasn't as large in Brooklyn, which saw a 20 percent dip in the same period, mainly in narcotics and white collar cases. The statistics are collected by the Justice Department from federal prosecutors and are made available by the non-profit Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC. Nationwide, the drop in cases for all U.S. attorneys offices combined amounted to about 4 percent from Fiscal Year 2005 to Fiscal Year 2006, according to TRAC. Officials with the U.S. attorneys office in Manhattan and Brooklyn declined last week to talk about caseload statistics, referring calls to the Justice Department in Washington. Justice officials declined to comment on the specific TRAC data but said Friday they weren't always sure how the organization "reconfigured" data.
