The entries in this guide are arranged by company name and include a history of each company, particularly its formation and that of subsidiaries together with mergers and take-overs. Brief details of the records, the relevant accession numbers and any limitations on access are given. Where the records have been listed this is indicated. A glossary of terms specific to the subject area is also included, together with an index. Background to the Collection The Museum's archive department began collecting records in the late 1960s and targeted a number of firms. Although many of the deposits were arranged through formal approaches by the Museum to companies, a significant number were offered by company staff: a significant example is the Supermarine archive (AC 70/4) including some 50,000 drawings, which would have been burnt had an employee not contacted the Museum. The collections seem to offer a bias towards certain types of record, notably drawings and production records, rather than financial records and board minutes.

Our Semi-Automatic Cargo Release Unit (SACRU) is designed for aircraft lifting up to 6,000lbs (2,722 Kg) and is extensively used by the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. The SACRU 1 Mk 2 has EMC protection and has been selected and approved by Agusta Westland for EH101 Navy Merlin MK1. The design is of simple construction involving no delicate mechanisms requiring fine adjustment. Certified by the CAA, variants of this cargo hook are also available as an FAA and Transport Canada approved bolt-on replacement hook for the Bell 204 through 412 series helicopters. The SACRU 1 is now available with load measurement to enable pilots to know the weight of the cargo and therefore monitor the airframe. Agusta-Westland approved for EH101 Merlin The SACRU 1 Mk 2 has been selected by Agusta-Westland for installation on EH101 Navy Merlin. WESTLAND SEA KING HAR Mk3 XZ585 RAFM ACCESSION NUMBER X008-4712 INDIVIDUAL HISTORY First of initial batch of nineteen Sea King HAR Mk 3 helicopters produced for the Royal Air Force for Search and Rescue duties; XZ585 was the first of these, serials batch XZ585 – XZ599. Constructor’s number WA581. 6 Sept 1977 First Flight Jan 78 Delivered to RAF Pete Chadwick recalled in 2018; regarding the introduction of Sea King into RAF service; Although XZ 585 is the first in the sequence of RAF Sea Kings, it wasn’t the first one the RAF received. ‘585 was retained at Westlands as a flying test bed for additional equipment which might be installed during the early days. The first one to be delivered to Culdrose, which is where the RAF established the RAF Sea King Training Unit(RAFSKTU) in the first event, was XZ 586. I was the first to fly it on 17th Feb 1978. I was the Training Officer(CFI) of the RAFSKTU and, once the first 4 Flights were converted to type, I took over as OC 202 Squadron. (There can’t be many Squadron Commanders who can claim to have trained all his own aircrew!) RAF Sea King Training Unit by Dec 1980. 22 Squadron by 1986 29 Jan 1982 Paul Challice memoir, 4.05 hour flight to assist a fishing vessel in the North Sea with a crew member with a broken ankle.
