2015-16 Academic Year:

Mountain Ballad – restaged this 15 minute story ballet based on choreography by the late Constance Hardinge. Changed work from proscenium to thrust for Malhoning Valley Ballet, PA. Previously, I staged this ballet for UNC Dance Theatre in 1993. May 2016

If You’re Not Coming Home – I’ll Be Dancing Alone - choreographed contemporary ballet that first premiered in Thailand and was later performed at Kent State. Work included my creating a soundscape for two of the three movements. December 2015 and January 2016

East Meets West – collaborated with two other choreographers and a Japanese composer in creating a new work for the first East Meets West Conference in Bangkok Thailand. January 2016

Peripheral Moments – choreographed 10-minute multi-media piece where the score was a collaboration that I created with a poet from Boston and a composer from Bangkok. Work included composing audio score and filming and editing video used in piece. December 2015

Artistic and Administrative Direction:  July/August 2017 – Coordinator – Limón International Summer Workshop at Kent State.   March 2017 – Coordinator – American College Dance Association East Central Conference, Kent State University. In charge of planning budgeting and supervising all aspects of National Conference for more than 450 dancers and faculty from close to thirty universities.

 January 2017 – Founding Executive Artistic Director – East Meets West (EMW) second international tour to Thailand (Bangkok and Hua Hin). In charge of planning and supervising international educational and performance program in Bangkok Thailand.

 National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD) 2015 - Tucson, AZ – began networking with Joffrey Ballet, Ruth Page and Ballet in order to develop new audition/master classes opportunities at Kent State.

 OhioDance, Columbus Ohio – attended regional dance conference and taught Master classes (2016 & 2017).

 Regional Dance America (RDA) 2017 – Attended National Festival in Phoenix, AZ. Participated in judging 5 auditions for close to 1,000 dancers. Contributed to four panels made up of Dance Professors from all over the country. Observed and participated in several master classes.

 Regional Dance America (RDA) 2016, NE Region, Erie, PA – judged two auditions as a recruiter and participated in two panel/roundtable presentations for high school dancers considering Dance in College.

Dance Coordinator Duties: Set agenda and lead weekly Dance Faculty meetings; arrange semester/annual Division schedules; introduced and implemented two year plan to increase technique for students. Plan, oversee and coordinate annual recruitment and audition events for the Dance Division. Set semester schedule for all full and part-time faculty balancing student and faculty needs. Point of contact for all students interested in Kent State’s Dance Division; handle weekly tours of individuals interested in the school. Frequent unplanned meetings with visiting parents and students as needed.

Committees and Community:  Member of School of Theatre and Dance Committees as follows: Curriculum Committee; Recruitment Committee (oversaw this committee for a year); Production Committee; and Three Successful Search Committees.  Faculty advisor for the newly registered student organization, East Meets West.  Faculty advisor for student group, Freshmen Fridays, formed to encourage Freshmen to collaborate and choreograph.  Contributor to the School of Music with guest lecture regarding Tango Music from the Dancer/Choreographer perspective.  Community outreach included multiple guest teaching engagements including being the Dance teacher for Temple Beth Shalom in Hudson, OH.  Handle rotating student advising load of between 20 and 30 Dance Majors and Minors.  Developed ongoing relationship between KSU Schools of Music and Theatre and Dance where dancers perform with the Thai Music Ensemble. So far, two collaborative concerts have taken place and one is planned for Fall 2017.  Developed ongoing relationship between Kent State University and Joffrey Ballet School, Ruth Page School, Limón Foundation and Ballet in the City as well as several local professional training schools and companies.

Grants applied for and received since joining Kent State:  Sponsorship of Limón Company for ACDA Conference at Kent State from College of Performing Arts ($10,000).  Grants for students participating in East Meets West 2017 (Total = $4,000). Students participating in this program received two grants for student research totaling.  Sponsorship of 2017 East Meets West program from SSRU (Approximate Value of provided meals, transportation and discounts applied, $6,000).  Sponsorship for 2 nights housing and meals for 14 participants in East Meets West 2017 from Patravadi High School of the Arts and Vic Hua Hin Theatre (approximate value = $1,400).  COTA Catalyst Grant - $5,000 awarded for East Meets West, January 2016.  Kent URC – International research involving KSU students - $3,500, January 2016.  Sponsorship of Housing and Meals for East Meets West (approx. value of $6,000) – KSU School of Theatre and Dance, Rajabhat Suan Sunandha University and Burapa University, January 2016.  Kent URC Funding ($750) to attend CORPS International Conference  Mettler Studios sponsorship of half day workshop with Mary Ann Brehm.

Other Initiatives:  Developed International performance and educational program, East Meets West anchored with a five year Memorandum of Agreement signed between Kent State University and Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University in Bangkok, Thailand.  Helped students create a new KSU student organization also titled East Meets West (link to Constitution).  Developed relationships with regional dance companies such as Ballet Theatre of Ohio, Canton Ballet and Hudson Ballet Conservatory resulting in artistic exchanges and free guest Master classes given by dance professionals including the world renown Cuban Ballet Master, Laura Alonso (daughter of Alicia Alonso), Eric Carvil and Christine Meneer.  Took substantial initiatives in order to expand upon the dance offerings at Kent State by increasing contact hours for technique classes and adding the following courses: Pointe, Men’s Ballet, Asian Fusion and East Meets West.  Created Master class recruitment events, and participated in regional and national festivals for Regional Dance America, resulting in hundreds of dancers from across the country becoming aware of Kent State’s Dance Division.

The Greeley Conservatory of Dance, Greeley, CO 1993-1999 Founding Owner and Artistic Director Responsible for strategic planning, scheduling, curriculum design and overseeing 10 teachers and 200+ students. Along with partner, purchased 10,000 square foot historic downtown building and designed space to include retail rental spaces on the first floor (street level) and 3 dance studios, dressing rooms and administrative office on the 2nd.

CHOREOGRAPHY FOR CHILDREN:

Choreographed 3-10 children’s pieces, each year, 1990-2015. While completing my Bachelors degree (1978-82), I taught and also choreographed for children ages 3-18. I can safely state that I have choreographed or taught variations in order to stage roughly 100 works for children’s dance recitals. These works are not listed individually.

Universal Ballet and Stars of the World, Asian Tour July 1985 Principal. Joined an all star cast which included: Patrick Bissell, Evelyn Hart, Jean Charles Gil, and Amy Rose,

for an eight week tour which included Bejing, Tokyo, and Seoul. Daniel Levins, the man who played the part of the choreographer in the movie The Turning Point was our Ballet Master on this tour.

LANGUAGE FLUENCIES OTHER THAN ENGLISH: As the son of the Cultural Attaché for the American Embassy, I spent two years of my youth in Buenos Aires, Argentina and four in Madrid Spain. During this period and since, I have used spoken Spanish with family and friends on an occasional basis. Later, as a professional dancer with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal, I spent four years living in Montreal and completed a degree in Arts Management at Concordia University that required my passing a French fluency exam. In addition to my knowledge of French and Spanish, my having taught and performed in several other countries has allowed a minor acquaintance with of several languages including Japanese, Korean, Greek, Thai and Hebrew.
