  • Pros and Cons: Anime Conventions and Cosplayers
PROS AND CONS: ANIME CONVENTIONS AND COSPLAYERS by Angela Barajas THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Sociology at The University of Texas at Arlington December 2018 Arlington, Texas Supervising Committee: David Arditi, Supervising Professor Kelly Bergstrand Heather Jacobson Copyright by Angela Barajas 2018 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Dr. David Arditi, my thesis advisor, for encouraging me to think critically about all of my work, especially culture. I would also like to thank Dr. Heather Jacobson and Dr. Kelly Bergstrand for their support as my thesis committee. Thank you all. i DEDICATION I would like to thank my family and friends who have supported me through this thesis project and my overall academic career. They have been there to bounce ideas off and complain to. Thank you for your interest in my work. ii ABSTRACT Pros and Cons: Anime Conventions and Cosplayers Angela Barajas, M.A. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2018 Supervising Professor: David Arditi Among the brightly-hued convention (con) halls, people dressed in feathers, foam armor, and spandex pose for pictures with one another as cosplayers. Cosplay is a way for fans to present themselves and their group to the fan community on a con-wide scale. Originally, I planned to investigate how cosplayers navigate their identities as cosplayers and as members of mainstream American society and how do these two identities inform each other. I sought to understand cosplayer’s identities as laborers within their cosplay groups. Using ethnographic research methods, I interviewed eleven participants and conducted participant observations.

FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM COGS108 Final Project Group Members: Yanyi Wang Ziwen Zeng Lingfei Lu Yuhan Wang Yuqing Deng Introduction and Background Movie revenue is one of the most important measure of good and bad movies. Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Reasrch Question: Various factors blend together to create a high revenue for movie, but what are the most important aspect contribute to higher revenue? What aspects should people put more effort on and what factors should people focus on when they try to higher the revenue of a movie? http://localhost:8888/nbconvert/html/Desktop/MyProjects/Pr_085/FinalProject.ipynb?download=false Page 1 of 62 FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM Hypothesis: We predict that the following factors contribute the most to movie revenue.

THE SOUTH ACCORDING TO QUENTIN TARANTINO A Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture The University of Mississippi by MICHAEL LEE HENLEY August 2015 Copyright Michael Lee Henley 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This thesis explores the filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s portrayal of the South and southerners in his films Pulp Fiction (1994), Death Proof (2007), and Django Unchained (2012). In order to do so, it explores and explains Tarantino’s mixture of genres, influences, and filmmaking styles in which he places the South and its inhabitants into current trends in southern studies which aim to examine the South as a place that is defined by cultural reproductions, lacking authenticity, and cultural distinctiveness. Like Godard before him, Tarantino’s movies are commentaries on film history itself. In short, Tarantino’s films actively reimagine the South and southerners in a way that is not nostalgic for a “southern way of life,” nor meant to exploit lower class whites.

  • The Contemporary American Horror Film Remake, 2003-2013
RE-ANIMATED: THE CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN HORROR FILM REMAKE, 2003-2013 Thesis submitted by Laura Mee In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2014 Abstract This doctoral thesis is a study of American horror remakes produced in the years 2003-2013, and it represents a significant academic intervention into an understanding of the horror remaking trend. It addresses the remaking process as one of adaptation, examines the remakes as texts in their own right, and situates them within key cultural, industry and reception contexts. It also shows how remakes have contributed to the horror genre’s evolution over the last decade, despite their frequent denigration by critics and scholars. Chapter One introduces the topic, and sets out the context, scope and approach of the work. Chapter Two reviews the key literature which informs this study, considering studies in adaptation, remaking, horror remakes specifically, and the genre more broadly. Chapter Three explores broad theoretical questions surrounding the remake’s position in a wider culture of cinematic recycling and repetition, and issues of fidelity and taxonomy. Chapter Four examines the ‘reboots’ of one key production company, exploring how changes are made across versions even as promotion relies on nostalgic connections with the originals. Chapter Five discusses a diverse range of slasher film remakes to show how they represent variety and contribute to genre development. Chapter Six considers socio-political themes in 1970s horror films and their contemporary post-9/11 remakes, and Chapter Seven focuses on gender representation and recent genre trends in the rape-revenge remake.

Jordan Assistant Professor of Media Studies Thesis Advisor Marie C. Hardin Associate Professor of Journalism Jeanne L. Hall Associate Professor of Film and Video *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT The overbearing effects of Hollywood continue to blur the lines of distinction between national and global cinema, leaving scholars to wonder whether the latter type of cinema has since trumped the former. This thesis explores the depths of this perplexity by looking at the cultural differences in post-1990s horror films from three countries: the United States, Japan, and Italy. Scholarship on women in horror films continues to focus on the feminist sensitivities, without the slightest regard for possible cultural specificities, within the horror genre. This, in turn, often collapses the study of women in horror films into a transnational genre, thereby contributing to the perception of a dominant global cinema. Therefore, it is the aim of the author to look at three culturally-specific subgenres of the horror film to explore their differences and similarities.

Not much has happened to me in the last few months, mostly work and in the last few weeks yard work. I did sign my first part lease on a horse, which is exciting for me, and the start of one of my long time dreams, to own my own horse. I’ve also been reorganizing my craft room. Mostly this means I put up a bunch of shelves and moved bags off my table and onto the shelves. One thing that has been consuming some of my time recently is a drawing show on YouTube called Pub Draw. It’s as much fun to watch as it is to draw along. For those of you into comics it’s hosted by Babs Tarr and she is teaching a bunch of voice actors to draw, or she’s herding cats. I haven’t actually figured that part out yet. Usually they draw a specific character in each episode, but the skills can be used draw just about any sort of humanoid character –sadly no gryphons or other types yet. Anyway, if you’re interested in drawing maybe check it out and if you draw some of your own characters, send your drawings to one of the ezines out there.
