FAN EXPO Dallas Welcomes Back Hometown Heroes Alan Tudyk, Khary Payton and Meat Loaf Return to Dallas March 31-April 2 FAN EXPO Dallas Welcomes Back Hometown Heroes Alan Tudyk, Khary Payton and Meat Loaf return to Dallas March 31-April 2 DALLAS (March 29, 2017) – FAN EXPO Dallas – the largest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming event in Texas – returns to Dallas March 31-April 2 and will serve as a special homecoming for some of the Lone Star State’s biggest stars, including Alan Tudyk, Khary Payton and Meat Loaf. “We have a great love for our show in Dallas … we have a lot of fun with our unique content,” says FAN EXPO HQ Vice President Andrew Moyes. “The nature of our event is special. It truly is a celebration, because it’s a place where the pop culture community comes together and celebrates all of the great things going on in this exciting space. It’s truly our great fans in Dallas combined with Texas’ greatest celebrity talents that make the show so special.” Alan Tudyk was born in El Paso but raised in Plano. He attended Haggard Middle School, where he was first exposed to improv. He credits his improv skills for getting him into Juilliard. Tudyk graduated in 1989 from Plano Senior High School, where he was known for being the class clown. He wore sombreros to school and regularly went to class dressed up as a lunch lady. Though he was the funny man on campus, he was serious about his acting career. Following high school, he attended Lon Morris Junior College and went to Juilliard for a couple of years. Since moving to Los Angeles, Tudyk has starred in television series including Firefly and Suburgatory, and movies like Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Frozen and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Khary Payton studied acting and directing at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. Following graduation, he stayed in Dallas to perform in a number of Dallas Theater Center productions, including Pericles, Tartuffe, Macbeth and A Christmas Carol. Payton is known for his voice characterizations in animated cartoons including Teen Titans, Young Justice, Justice League and Big Hero 6. One of his most notable acting roles is portraying King Ezekiel in The Walking Dead. Meat Loaf was born and raised in Dallas. His father was a Dallas police officer and his mother taught in the Dallas public school system. He graduated in 1965 from Thomas Jefferson High School, where he played football and discovered his love for acting. Meat starred in school productions including Where’s Charley, The Music Man and The Bad Seed. After his mother died in 1967, he left Dallas for Los Angeles and never looked back. He returned in 2015 to receive a distinguished alumni award from his high school. Meat is now one of the best-selling music artists of all time with worldwide sales of more than 80 million records. He will reunite with his The Rocky Horror Picture Show cast mates Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn and Nell Campbell at FAN EXPO. While Alan Tudyk, Khary Payton and Meat Loaf don’t call Dallas home anymore, the city welcomes back its hometown heroes. Massive amounts of 35mm film were packed neatly in unwieldy padlocked metal cans and sent to a world’s worth of neighborhood cinemas. During my tenure at a local multiplex, a particularly long movie about a boy wizard resulted in a particularly massive film print. I managed to get this print halfway up a particularly steep staircase before tumbling bow-tie first down to what I feared was my doom but was, in fact, a conveniently placed pile of industrial sized bags of Orville Redenbacher. After that, I left it to our fearless projectionists to struggle them up the stairs to dimly lit projection booths. There, hunched over miles of celluloid, they would work into the wee hours of the morning – steady hands and bleary eyes assembling a new adventure. Such was the weight of storytelling. And the enormity of it made sense to me. Should one be able to lose the life and times of Charles Foster Kane if it slides down into that little space between the entertainment center and the wall? Emily Beck FARGO THEATRE Should the battle against an evil galactic empire be shipped in a standard packing envelope lined with those delicious little bubbles? Executive Director Isn’t it only fitting that the epic journey to return The One Ring (back to the fiery chasm from whence it came) be so enormous it could topple a teenager in an usher’s tuxedo made entirely of polyester? But the world turned.

Thank you all. i DEDICATION I would like to thank my family and friends who have supported me through this thesis project and my overall academic career. They have been there to bounce ideas off and complain to. Thank you for your interest in my work. ii ABSTRACT Pros and Cons: Anime Conventions and Cosplayers Angela Barajas, M.A. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2018 Supervising Professor: David Arditi Among the brightly-hued convention (con) halls, people dressed in feathers, foam armor, and spandex pose for pictures with one another as cosplayers. Cosplay is a way for fans to present themselves and their group to the fan community on a con-wide scale. Originally, I planned to investigate how cosplayers navigate their identities as cosplayers and as members of mainstream American society and how do these two identities inform each other. I sought to understand cosplayer’s identities as laborers within their cosplay groups. Using ethnographic research methods, I interviewed eleven participants and conducted participant observations.

Not much has happened to me in the last few months, mostly work and in the last few weeks yard work. I did sign my first part lease on a horse, which is exciting for me, and the start of one of my long time dreams, to own my own horse. I’ve also been reorganizing my craft room. Mostly this means I put up a bunch of shelves and moved bags off my table and onto the shelves. One thing that has been consuming some of my time recently is a drawing show on YouTube called Pub Draw. It’s as much fun to watch as it is to draw along. For those of you into comics it’s hosted by Babs Tarr and she is teaching a bunch of voice actors to draw, or she’s herding cats. I haven’t actually figured that part out yet. Usually they draw a specific character in each episode, but the skills can be used draw just about any sort of humanoid character –sadly no gryphons or other types yet. Anyway, if you’re interested in drawing maybe check it out and if you draw some of your own characters, send your drawings to one of the ezines out there.
