Cultivate - PSALMS PSALM 126: We now come to the seventh of the "Songs of Ascent," a lovely group of Psalms that God's people would sing and pray together as they journeyed up to Jerusalem. Here in this Psalm they are praying for the day when the Lord would "restore the fortunes" of God's people (vs.1,4). 126 is a prayer for spiritual revival and reawakening. The first half is all happiness and joy, remembering how God answered this prayer once. But now that's just a memory... like a dream. They need to be renewed again. So they call out to God once more: transform, restore, deliver us again. Don't you think this is a prayer that God's people could stand to sing and pray today? Pray it this week. We'll pray it together on Sunday. God is here inviting such prayer; he's even putting the very words in our mouths. PSALM 127: This is now the eighth of the "Songs of Ascent," which God's people would sing on their procession up to the temple. We've seen that Zion / Jerusalem / The House of the Lord are all common themes in these Psalms. But the "house" that Psalm 127 refers to (in v.1) is that of a dwelling for a family. 127 speaks plainly and clearly to our anxiety-ridden thirst for success. How can anything be strong or successful or sufficient or secure... if it does not come from the Lord? Without the blessing of the Lord, our lives will come to nothing. -
A Sermon on Psalm 40
“I Delight to Do Your Will, O My God” A Sermon on Psalm 40 Texts; Psalm 40:1-17; Hebrews 10:1-17 ______________________________ ne of the best-known Psalms among our contemporaries is Psalm 40. No doubt, this is because the Irish band U2 closed out their concerts for many years with a very moving rendition of it, in Owhich huge audiences sang along with the band. As written, Psalm 40 reflects the author’s (David) thanksgiving for deliverance from urgent danger. In light of this sense of immediate need for deliverance of which David is speaking, John Calvin–who was very reticent to speak about himself–describes his conversion as being pulled from the mire of his addiction to the papacy, a direct reference to verse 2 of this particular Psalm. Calvin goes on to say, “God by a sudden conversion subdued and brought my mind to a teachable frame, which was more hardened in such matters than might have been expected from one at my early period of life.”1 In light of this Psalm’s historic importance, and current familiarity, I thought Psalm 40 would be a good place to begin as we spend the next few weeks surveying select Psalms. The Book of Psalms was the hymnal of ancient Israel. The Psalter is also one of the most beloved portions of God’s word, provides Christ’s church with much of its song, and also serves as the foundation for the devotional life of God’s people. My goal in preaching on the Psalms is to direct our attention to them so as to stir in our hearts a desire to read, study, reflect upon, and sing this wonderful portion of God’s word. -

PLEA FOR DELIVERANCE (11Q5 XVIII, ?–XIX, 18) 167 especially within the colon or verse. In addition, phonetic parallelism seems to play a role between adjacent verses, specifi cally between hk(ydwhb and hkdyb in vv. 4–5 and between hkm# and ytkmsn in vv. 13–14. Plea, like Apostrophe to Zion, makes relatively frequent use of biblical lan- guage and imagery. Th e second verse’s assertions that “worms” and “maggots” do not praise God resonate with many other biblical passages that speak in similar terms about “the dead” and “those who descend to the pit.” Th e verse (together with v. 3) alludes (through the vocabulary and syntax) more specifi cally, how- ever, to Isa 38:18–19. While in this biblical passage the living are contrasted with the dead in order to encourage God’s salvation, in the Plea the signifi cance of the contrast is subtler, something that can be inferred through a secondary allusion made in the same verse. Plea 2 also seems to allude to Job 25:6, where the word pair hmr and h(lwt occurs in parallelism, a rare occurrence in the Bible (see Isa 14:11). Th e Job passage is unlike that from Isaiah 38 in that the reference is not to the dead but rather to the abject state of humanity. Th e double allusion in Plea 2–3 (to Job 25 and Isa 38) complements the idea expressed in the following verses that humanity, when it lacks God’s mercy, is dejected and like the dead, unable to praise him. -

Hopkin: The Psalm 22:16 Controversy: New Evidence from the Dead Sea Scrol The Psalm 22:16 Controversy New Evidence from the Dead Sea Scrolls Shon Hopkin ew verses in the Bible have produced as much debate and commentary F as Psalm 22:16: “For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.”1 The dis- cussions center on the last character (reading right to left) of the Hebrew vrak (“pierced/dug”), assumed to be the word from which the Septuagint Greek çrujan (“they have pierced”) was translated—assumed because the original Hebrew texts from which the Septuagint was translated are no longer extant. If the last character of the Hebrew word was a waw (v), as the Greek seems to indicate, then the translation “pierced” is tenable. But a later Hebrew text called the Masoretic text has a yod (y) instead of a waw (v), mak- ing the word yrak, which translated into English reads “like a lion my hands and my feet.”2 Thus, two divergent possibilities have existed side by side for centuries, causing much speculation and debate. -

Barbiero, “Psalm 41:14,” OTE 32/2 (2019): 317-342 317 Psalm 41:14, or the Unity of the Masoretic Psalm 411 GIANNI BARBIERO (PONTIFICAL BIBLICAL INSTITUTE) ABSTRACT Against the almost unanimous consensus over the editorial character of the doxology of Ps 41:14, this essay defends v. 14 as belonging to Ps 41. First, the author indicates the link between v. 14 and the previous v. 13, then with the incipit of the psalm. In fact, beatitude (v. 2) and benediction (v. 14) form a typical pair in the Psalter. In a second stage, the author delineates a structure for the whole of Ps 41 with the inclusion of v. 14. He recognises four stanzas (2-4, 5-7, 8-11, 12-14) which correspond with one another chiastically. The psalm intends to contrast the care which Yhwh, the God of Israel, gives to the weak with the behaviour of men who tend to marginalise them. Psalms 38 and 39 conclude with pleas for relief (38:21-22; 39:12-13). What other similarities can you find between Psalms 38 and 39? Psalm 40:1-2 speaks of the David’s troubles and reveals the relief. Left at death’s door in Psalm 39:12-13, David refers to his rescue from death in Psalm 40:2. The Lord puts a new song (40:3) into David’s silent mouth (39:1-2, 9). Psalm 150 is the final chapter of this book and it is all about Praise. This chapter shows us the importance of Praise as it celebrates God regardless of circumstances. Main Passage: Psalm 150 (only six verses long) Session Outline: 1. Praise Defined (Psalm 150: 1a) 2. Where to Praise (Psalm 150: 1b) 3. What to Praise Him For (Psalm 150: 2) 4. Kingdom Connection: Praise began during the Creation Era and will continue until the second coming of Jesus Christ. We are told in Revelation that there will be eternal praise before the throne of God, but there is no better place to start praising the Lord than here and now. 1 Psalm 150 Kingdom Praise Introduction As a teacher I admit that I looked at this lesson and was not initially excited. I tend to prefer passages that are more of a narrative. I like characters we can dig into, looking at their background, their relationships, their choices and learn from their victories, challenges and mistakes. I also tend to like those passages that have interesting historical context about the town or region; looking at the political and religious leaders of the day. -
