Sewall Memorial Congregational Church Submitted by Ann Montgomery Last Sunday, “King’s Day” was celebrated in fine style! First came a shorter-than-usual opening worship service in which the story of the “wise men from the east” traveling to Bethlehem to see the newborn “king of Jews” was read and expanded upon by Pastor Ronald Windhorst. After some prayers and singing, the rest of the hour was spent celebrat- ing that amazing event, including the usual procession around the sanctuary, led by the “three wise ones” (not “kings” or “men,” since two out of the three were young ladies). Helen Brooks had a wonderful program of activities and a story to share with all. Each child received gifts from a bag of gifts, which were “won” by happening to be holding the wrapped package when the music stopped, mid-phrase. Also included was a story about a drummer boy who wanted to give the wonderful baby a gift when he found that’s where this procession of Wise Men was heading. His gift was obvious from the beginning of the story since Helen had the children supplied with drums on which they “made a joyful The photo shows the children, as well as the older congregational mem- noise” every time she referred to drums and pointed to the children to “do their thing.” bers, following Pastor Colin Windhorst as he led the group in “Children, The idea that we still are able to give this baby, now understood to be Jesus the Christ, Go Where I Send Thee,” complete with additive, repetitive hand and whatever we hold most dear or do the best, was a theme that ran throughout the joyful body motions. CA000000075 CA000003091 CA000001704 PAGE 17 FOR RELEASE JANUARY 12, 2020 State Sending Tax Relief Checks to Maine THE TV CROSSWORD Homeowners by Jacqueline E. Mathews By Sarah Craighead Dedmon In the coming two months, Maine’s Office of the State Treasurer will send $102 relief payments to all homeowners who qualified for the Homestead Exemption in 2019. In August 2019, Maine municipalities were directed to submit the names of eligible homeowners no later than Jan. 1, and that information will be used to support An Act to Return Funds to Maine Property Tax Payers. In a written statement, said his office expects 305,000 Maine taxpayers will receive the payment. The Property Tax Relief Fund receives 20 percent of the state’s unappropriated surplus after all required deductions are made, and tax relief payments are trig- gered when the total amount of funds available divided by the number of homesteads that qualify is expected to result in a payment not less than $100 per household. For more information on the program and how the payments will be sent, visit https://www. maine.gov/treasurer/property_tax_relief/index.html.
