The COVID-19 pandemic up-ended our lives and our livelihoods and unfortunately impacted the ODA Foundation as well. Though we were unable to hold our ODA Foundation raffle, our major fundraiser, we were still able to stay true to our mission of improving the oral health of the citizens of Ohio and enhancing the dental profession in the state, although at a reduced level from previous years. The Foundation was able to award scholarships to deserving dental students to help reduce their student debt, and grants to access to care programs that continued to aid the underserved in our communities. This was all made possible with the generous donations we received from those who believe in our mission. Because of the donations received through our Circles of Impact levels of giving, the ODA Foundation was able to award the following: • Two access to care grants, awarded to the Good Samaritan Free Health Center in Cincinnati and the Miami County Dental Clinic. Both of these nonprofit organizations provide care and education to Ohioans in need. • Seven scholarships were awarded to outstanding students from Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine and The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. These included the Foundations three memorial scholarships – the Dr. E. Karl Schneider II Humanitarian Scholarship, the Daryl Dever Advocacy Scholarship, and the Forward Ever Scholarship in memory of Dr. R. E. “Jim” Snelson for his leadership in organized dentistry. The Dr. James F. Mercer Leadership Scholarship was awarded from the Mercer Fund, a designated fund within the ODA Foundation. • The ODA Foundation also awarded a 2020 scholarship in honor of ODA Past President Dr. Thomas Paumier, for going above and beyond the call of duty during the COVID pandemic for ODA members. Even though the challenges of 2020 impacted the revenue of the ODA Foundation, we thank you all for your generous support and rely on that support to sustain our mission. We hope you will consider a donation to the ODA Foundation in 2021 at one of our Circles of Impact levels. It is through your generosity that we sustain our ability to impact Ohio programs and scholarships. We hope to be able to provide funding to a greater number of worthy students and access to care initiatives in the coming year. Jennifer A. The 2020 recipient was Nisha Maheshwari. "I am extremely grateful to have been chosen for the 2020 Darryl Dever Advocacy Scholarship. Through advocacy, we can recognize the power of a collective voice. I believe that being part of advocacy is being part of something bigger than myself and being able to witness the culmination of years of advocacy efforts leading to tangible change is very gratifying." DR. E. KARL SCHNEIDER II HUMANITARIAN SCHOLARSHIP The Dr. E. Karl Schneider II Humanitarian Scholarship is awarded annually in memory of Dr. Schneider, who passed away during his year as chairman of the ODA Foundation in 2017. The scholarship recognizes one student for his or her efforts to improve the community. The 2020 recipient was Savanah Craig. “I am honored to have been chosen as the recipient of the 2020 Dr. E. Karl Schneider II Humanitarian Scholarship. I was drawn to the dental profession because I knew it would provide me an opportunity to serve those in my community. It is my hope that I will reflect Dr. Schneider’s love of service throughout the rest of my career. My most sincere thanks to the ODA Foundation and its members who made this scholarship possible.” FORWARD EVER SCHOLARSHIP The Forward Ever Scholarship is awarded annually to one student who demonstrates exemplary leadership in organized dentistry in memory of ODA past president and past ODA Foundation chairman, Dr. R. E. “Jim” Snelson whose motto was “Forward Ever, Backward Never.” The 2020 recipient was Alisha Jimenez-Thompson. "As a first generation dentist, I am abundantly grateful for the mentorship and support that I receive from the Ohio Dental Association Foundation and its members. It is an honor to be the 2020 Forward Ever Scholarship Award Recipient. I look forward to joining you as colleagues and contributing to the continued growth of our profession. I will pay your generosity forward to future generations of dental professionals." DR. JAMES F. MERCER LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP The Dr. James F. Mercer Leadership Scholarship is awarded annually to one OSU D4 dental student to recognize leadership in dental school and in the community. Scott Balzer was selected for his commitment to leadership both in dental school and in his community. "Being the recipient of the James F. Mercer Leadership Scholarship is an honor that I am most proud of. I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to the Mercer Fund of the ODA Foundation. My time spent with ODA members and staff during my four years of dental school was influential in my development as a leader and will certainly help shape the course of my career. I was fortunate to have been introduced to organized dentistry at the beginning of my dental school journey and look forward to serving my patients, my profession, and my community throughout my life." 5 2020 Access to Care Grants In 2020, the ODA Foundation received five grant applications and awarded access to care grants to the Good Samaritan Free Health Center in Cincinnati and to the Miami County Dental Clinic. While we were not able to give out as many grants as normal out this year, we would like to share some of the testimonials we have received from those who have received grants in past years. The Good Samaritan Free Health Center’s dental program would not be where it is today without the support of the ODA Foundation. Because of our partnership, we have purchased supplies and upgraded our clinic equipment which has enabled us to expand our volunteer network, provide oral healthcare to more uninsured adults in our community, and ultimately improve their oral health. We are very grateful for the ODA Foundation’s investments in our patients, which have improved their oral and overall health and made strides toward greater oral health equity. The Ohio Dental Association Foundation has been a phenomenal partner to the Miami County Dental Clinic over the past several years! We are grateful recipients of grant funding that has allowed us to continue to fulfill our mission of providing quality dental care and oral health education in a safe, compassionate, and accessible environment to low-income, uninsured, under-insured patients in Miami and Shelby counties. The funding that we have been granted has been used toward the purchase of critical dental supplies and equipment, such as hand pieces that are used daily to remove decay from a patient’s teeth, and composite material to fill the tooth once the decay is removed. Without the generosity of the ODA Foundation, the Miami County Dental Clinic would not be able to see and treat our over 8,300 active patients from Miami and Shelby counties! We are honored to have the support of the Ohio Dental Association Foundation and are proud to work with such a reputable and respectable organization in the dental field. Stephanie M. In this depiction of an American military dentist Eveillard reminds us of the patriotism and sacrifice of American dentists in World War I and of our fellow dentists who are today serving our country. The painting is signed and dated 1918. St. Nazaire is in the Loire. There was not a formal dental corps prior to WW I. In June of 1917 General Pershing requested the Secretary of War to send the senior dental officer to France to establish a depot and organize work. The dental officer in question requested authority to organize and take with him a dental corps unit to be composed of himself and six specially qualified dental surgeons. The members of this unit assembled in New York City from July 10–15 and arranged to sail with the second convoy which was to leave on July 28. During the later part of June the Surgeon General also requested orders directing 20 members of the newly organized Dental Service Corps to proceed to New York for transportation with the second convoy of troops.
