Ojukwu’s government looked certain to topple at the beginning of the summer of 1968, yet Biafra held on and did not capitulate until nearly two years later, on 15 January 1970. The Ojukwu regime found itself in a serious predicament; how to maintain support for a war that was increasingly costly to the Igbo people, both in military terms and in the menacing face of the starvation of the civilian population. Further, the Biafran government had to not only mobilize a global public opinion campaign against the “genocidal” campaign waged against them, but also convince the world that the only option for Igbo survival was an independent Biafra. -

These three spheres and phases also correspond to the past, the present and the future, respectively. The living are always in awe of the dead and revere them, while the dead are believed to possess the ability to (re)visit the world of the living through reincarnation. The present study is based on the claim that, while aspects of the indigenous Yoruba belief system such as ancestorhood and apotheosis are getting lost on the millennial generation of Yoruba persons, the alter-native Yoruba music genre provides a viable evidence of how elements of Yoruba folk culture are being preserved by culturally and ideologically conscious members of the same generation. Using the Cultural Theory framework, the study demonstrates the possibility of mainstreaming Yoruba cultural studies into the larger corpus of canonical theories in global cultural studies. humanities Article Political Messages in African Music: Assessing Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Lucky Dube and Alpha Blondy Uche Onyebadi Department of Journalism, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, TX 76129, USA; [email protected] Received: 30 September 2018; Accepted: 30 November 2018; Published: 6 December 2018 Abstract: Political communication inquiry principally investigates institutions such as governments and congress, and processes such as elections and political advertising. This study takes a largely unexplored route: An assessment of political messages embedded in music, with a focus on the artistic works of three male African music icons—Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (Nigeria), Lucky Dube (South Africa), and Alpha Blondy (Côte d’Ivoire). Methodologically, a purposive sample of the lyrics of songs by the musicians was textually analyzed to identify the themes and nuances in their political messaging. Framing was the theoretical underpinning. This study determined that all three musicians were vocal against corruption, citizen marginalization, and a cessation of wars and bloodshed in the continent. Introduction Music permeates significant aspects of African society, culture, and tradition. Adebayo(2017, p. 56) opined that “to the African, music is not just a pastime, it is a ritual” that describes the true essence and humaneness in being of African origin. Cudjoe(1953, p. 280) description of the place of music among the Ewe people in Ghana typifies this African musical heritage. He observed that “music has an important place in the social life of the Ewe people. There is no activity which does not have music appropriate to it: weaver, farmer and fisherman each sings in perfect time to the rhythmic movement of (one’s) craft .. -

When I first entered the University of Texas at Austin in 2007 to begin my doctoral studies, I had a clear plan for finishing. I knew that I wanted to write on the United States and the Nigerian Civil War, which, as it turns out, was a good start. I promised my wife it would take five years to finish. Seven years later, I have completed my degree. Part of the reason for the delay was that I discovered that the Nigerian Civil War was a much larger event with much more import than scholars have realized. My dissertation required research on three continents and numerous cities: from Los Angeles, to London, to Lagos. -

Abstract Historically, Nigeria and France cannot be said to have enjoyed a robust and cordial relations. Two incidences support this assertion, the first was the diplomatic face-off between both countries when France tested an atomic bomb in Africa against Nigeria’s protest while the second manifested in France’s support for Biafra during the Nigeria-Biafra crisis in 1966 and beyond. It is also on record that France had once worked tirelessly towards the dismemberment of Nigeria as a result of the competition for influence between both countries over the Francophone West African States. This paper examines the twists and turns of the relations between both countries in the wake of the recent visit by Emmanuel Macron, France’s President to Nigeria. Qualitatively driven and relying on the secondary sources of data, the paper observed that Macron’s visit has added some value to the relations between both countries given the peculiar nature of that visit. It equally averred that Macron’s visit to the legendary Fela Anikulapo’s Afro Beat New Afrika shrine in Ikeja, Lagos is not only a reinvention of their bilateral relations but has greatly changed the relations between the two countries, with France now exploiting other areas of developmental cooperation in Nigeria. -

Nigeria’s Great Speeches in History The Speech Declaring Nigeria’s Independence by Nigeria’s First Prime Minister Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa – October 1, 1960 Today is Independence Day. The first of October 1960 is a date to which for two years, Nigeria has been eagerly looking forward. At last, our great day has arrived, and Nigeria is now indeed an independent Sovereign nation. Words cannot adequately express my joy and pride at being the Nigerian citizen privileged to accept from Her Royal Highness these Constitutional Instruments which are the symbols of Nigeria’s Independence. It is a unique privilege which I shall remember forever, and it gives me strength and courage as I dedicate my life to the service of our country. This is a wonderful day, and it is all the more wonderful because we have awaited it with increasing impatience, compelled to watch one country after another overtaking us on the road when we had so nearly reached our goal. But now, we have acquired our rightful status, and I feel sure that history will show that the building of our nation proceeded at the wisest pace: it has been thorough, and Nigeria now stands well-built upon firm foundations. Today’s ceremony marks the culmination of a process which began fifteen years ago and has now reached a happy and successful conclusion. It is with justifiable pride that we claim the achievement of our Independence to be unparalleled in the annals of history. Each step of our constitutional advance has been purposefully and peacefully planned with full and open consultation, not only between representatives of all the various interests in Nigeria but in harmonious cooperation with the administering power which has today relinquished its authority. -

The African Roots of Cuban Music By Boima Tucker British sociologist Paul Gilroy suggested the history of culture in the Atlantic world is characterized by constant exchange. One of the most traceable elements of that exchange, is the musical connections between communities of African descent on either side of the ocean. These musical practices operate as sites of resistance, cultural retention, and social cohesion that allow us to understand some of the ways we all are formed by trans-continental processes. During the dawn of recorded music in the early part of the 20th century, Cuba—one of many New World sites of African and indigenous resistance to European colonisation and enslavement—would become a hotbed for musical export in the emerging industrialized system of music distribution. Folk musical traditions from across the island would come together in Havana’s studios, and then get dispersed around the entire Atlantic world. In the early part of the 20th Century, Cuban musical styles like son, mambo and guaguanco followed migrants and sailors out across the Atlantic, hitting radio waves in the ports of landing, and spreading throughout the interior of the countries they landed in. With its strong traces of West and Central African rhythms, this music would find legions of devoted followers on the African continent. Local artists would try their hand at recreating the sound, and start to mix elements of their own local traditions creating what we now know as Congolese rumba, soukous, mbalax, semba, kizomba, and highlife, etc. These styles, amongst many others on the continent, would go on to form the backbone of national identity in the post-independence period, their propagation supported with enthusiasm by the leaders of the new nations.
