BECOMING TEACHER OF THE YEAR It’s that time of year again. Lent. A time to give up something as AT FORT DORCHESTER we prepare and purify ourselves for the Passion and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. While most ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ! people give up chocolate, or cursing (I know you don’t do that anyway…) and some even give up “French Fries” (We are looking at you, Ralph), musicians give up something else entirely. William Bennett Director of Music

WHISPERING HOPE (Excerpted from the Internet ) "Whispering Hope" was composed by a man named Alice Hawthorne! Of course, that was a pseudonym, derived from his mother’s name. Septimus Winner (1827-1902) was the seventh child of Joseph Winner and Mary Hawthorne. I wonder if their other chil- dren were named according to their order of birth? His mother was a relative of . Winner was a self-taught musician who briefly studied the violin, and was proficient by the age of 20. He also played the guitar and banjo. After graduating from high school, he opened a music store and gave lessons on a number of instruments. At 18, he formed a music publishing business with his brother, then with other partners, until his death at 75. He wrote, or edited, 200 volumes of music for more than 20 instruments, produced more than 2,000 arrangements for piano and violin, plus more than 1,500 easy arrangements for a number of instruments. His book of banjo instruction is still used today! While listening to a young black boy playing the guitar and whistling like a mockingbird, he composed, “Listen to the Mockingbird.” This song was so popu- lar that it was commented on by and King Edward VII of England. Winner sold the rights to the song for $5.00! One of his compositions had him arrested for treason. This song was in support of Union General McClellen after Lincoln fired him. Winner was released after destroying the remaining copies of the song, even though 80,000 copies had already sold in the first two days after going on sale. Another popular song he wrote was, ”,” which was written in 1868 for a minstrel show skit about John Brown. This song was used by Agatha Christy in her novel, “.” During the Civil War he wrote, “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone.” This was set to a German Folk tune and is still popular with children today. “Whispering Hope", written in 1868, was not written as a religious song, but it became his most successful song. This fact both amazed and amused him. The hymn gained instant success in churches. This is the last popular song Winner wrote before his death, and is the work for which he will be remembered. 10 3 CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES Dear SPC Children and Families,
