United Nations Day is a chance to recognize how much this invaluable Organization contributes to peace and common progress. It is a time to reflect on what more we can do to realize our vision for a better world. The fighting in Syria is our biggest security challenge.

Millions of people depend on UN humanitarian personnel for life-saving assistance. UN experts are working hand-in-hand with the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to destroy Syria’s stockpiles. And we are pushing for a diplomatic solution to end suffering that has gone on far too long.

Our most urgent development challenge is to make sustainability a reality. The Millennium Development Goals have cut poverty in half. Now we must maintain the momentum, craft an equally inspiring post-2015 development agenda and reach an agreement on climate change. This year again, we saw the United Nations come together on armed conflict, human rights, the environment and many other issues. We continue to show what collective action can do. We can do even more. In a world that is more connected, we must be more united.

On United Nations Day, let us pledge to live up to our founding ideals and work together for peace, development and human rights.

Vatican suspends ‘bishop of bling’ THE Vatican has sus- pended a senior German Church leader dubbed the “bishop of bling” by the media over his alleged lav- ish spending. Thursday October 24, 2013 LABOUR DEPT: ROAD SAFETY ON THE JOB KEY

By Regina Selman Moore

MANY road accidents occur as a re- sult of people being engaged in work. As a result, the Labour Department is just as concerned with occupational transportation incidents, as it is with those occur- ring on the work compound. This was the message sent by Chief Labour Officer, Vincent Burnett, as he delivered the keynote address at the National Safety Council (NSC), Barbados, Defensive Driving Course – Left Side of the Road Launch, hosted by the Barbados Road Safety Association (BRSA) recently. The launch was held in the Training Room of Co-operators General Insurance Company Limited, Collymore Rock, St. Michael. “Any incident occurring involving a person while carrying out their work du- ties on the road, garners the same atten- tion from the Labour Department as if that employee were on the compound of their employer conducting that same work,” Burnett said. The Chief Labour Officer noted that persons involved in driving at work are exposed to a number of hazards. The main physical hazards include risk of injury as a result of a vehicular collision; ergonomic difficulties associated with prolonged sitting in poorly designed seats and cabins; manual handling; exposure to noise and vibrations when loading and unloading; inhalation of vapours and Chief Labour Officer, Vincent Burnett (seated right), along with Ferdinand Walton, representative for Esso Standard Oil, the Road Safety Business Champion for 2013, listen attentively as Eric Kipps of Trinidad’s Jaric Environmental Health and ROAD SAFETY on Page 7 Safety group goes through his presentation.
