A Study Guide to the Penguin Edition of Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin’S A STUDY GUIDE TO THE PENGUIN EDITION OF GREG MORTENSON AND DAVID OLIVER RELIN’S By Jeanne M. McGlinn PENGUIN GROUP (USa) 2 A STUDY GUIDE TO THE PENGUIN EDITION OF GREG MORTENSON AND DAVID OLIVER RELIN’S THREE CUPS OF TEA INTRODUCTION After a failed attempt to scale K-2 in 1993, Greg Mortenson finds his calling in the village of Korphe when he asks to visit the “village school.” In place of the standard classroom, he finds eighty-two children in the open air, without a teacher, kneeling on the ground to practice their multiplication tables. Mortenson recalls, “I felt like my heart was being torn out. There was a fierceness in their [the children’s] desire to learn, despite how mightily everything was stacked against them, that reminded me of [my sister] Christa. I knew I had to do something.” Mortenson makes a promise to the village chief to build a school for the children. Thus begins his campaign to finance schools for the children of this and other villages in Pakistan and later Afghanistan. Mortenson’s biography is a story of courage and perseverance in the face Image courtesy Central Asia Institute. of tremendous odds, the drive to fulfill a promise and the belief in the power of education to change lives. • THREE CUPS of TEA Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
A VIKING READING GROUP GUIDE TO THREE CUPS OF TEA Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin AN INTRODUCTION TO Three Cups of Tea Three Cups of Tea is the true story of one of the most extraordinary humanitarian missions of our time. In 1993, a young American mountain climber named Greg Mortenson stumbled into a tiny village high in Pakistan’s beautiful and desperately poor Karakoram Himalaya region. Ill, exhausted, and depressed after a failed attempt to scale the summit of K2, Mortenson regained his strength and his will to live thanks to the generosity of the people of the village of Korphe. Before he left, Mortenson made a vow that would profoundly change both the villagers’ lives and his own—that he would return and build them a school. The book traces how Mortenson kept this promise (and many more) in the high country of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson was up against considerable odds. Not only is the region remote and dangerous, it is also a notorious breeding ground for Al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists. In the course of his work, Mortenson was kidnapped and threatened with death; he endured local rivalries, deep misunderstandings, jealousy, and corruption, not to mention treacherous roads and epic weather. What kept him going was his passionate belief that balanced, nonextremist education, for boys and girls alike, is the most effective way to combat the violent intolerance that breeds terrorism. To date, Mortenson’s Central Asia Institute has constructed fiftyfive schools, and the work goes on. Mortenson initially approached Karakoram as a climber and he never lost the mountaineer’s appreciation for the region’s austere beauty and incredible physical challenges.

Statement of the Board of Directors, Central Asia Institute Regarding Recent Media Reports April 16, 2011 From the time the Central Asia Institute was first created, its mission and that of its co-founder, Greg Mortensen, has been to support and promote educational opportunities by helping local communities build and operate schools to educate the children, especially girls, and supporting women’s vocational centers, libraries and other educational resources in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Concurrently, CAI’s outreach efforts include educating the American and international public about the need to promote peace through expanding educational opportunities. Greg’s speeches, books and public appearances are the primary means of educating the American people on behalf of the Institute and he is CAI’s principal fundraiser. He devotes his time and his life to this important work. CAI’s activities and Greg’s are closely intertwined. • Greg worked for many years for little or no compensation, but is now paid a salary by the Institute as its Executive Director. In addition some of his expenses incurred to promote the Institute’s domestic education programs are, appropriately, paid by the organization. • His books are advertised and distributed by the Institute as a primary means of fulfilling its mission of educating the American public. • He receives speaking fees for many of his appearances (although he also volunteers his time for many audiences, including military preparing to deploy to Afghanistan) and royalties from the sale of his books. Late last year, an attorney retained by CAI questioned whether these practices might raise issues of CAI providing “excess benefits” to Greg – an issue that was also raised by the American Institute of Philanthropy.

SILENCE AND MEMORY: VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN DURING THE PARTITION OF 1947 Pronoma Debnath TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2016 __________________________________________ Syed Akbar Hyder Department of South Asian Studies Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Michael Anderson Department of International Relations Second Reader 1 2 ABSTRACT Author: Pronoma Debnath Title: Silence and Memory: Violence Against Women During the Partition of 1947 Supervising Professors: Syed Akbar Hyder, Michael Anderson For my thesis, I am focusing on the abduction, dissimulation, and recovery of women during the Partition of India in 1947. Women were used as political tools between various religious groups during the tumultuous violence of Partition, and one of the ways this manipulation manifested itself was through the abduction of women from one religious community by men from another community. Women often assimilated into the new community, dissimulating from their previous identity and adopting a new culture. Later, the governments of both India and Pakistan attempted to reclaim the women as a way of creating a national identity. Women were also violated by men from their own communities, a violence that has traditionally been overlooked. The threads of sexuality and identity make talking about this period and these particular events very difficult, and many women who lived through these experiences have remained quiet, a silence that is important to discuss. This silence also affects the collective and individual memory of Partition. Narratives are created to emphasize or erase violence in the midst of this silence, and this affects our perceptions of Partition. This thesis will present the abduction of women during Partition in the context of a legacy of British colonialism, as well as the ramifications of the event for South Asia today.

Pennies for Peace, Narragansett Elementary (Rhode Island) It is delightful to share with you that the 3rd Grade students at Narragansett Elementary are participating in the Pennies for Peace campaign throughout the month of April. Pennies for Peace is a service-learning project designed to broaden students’ cultural horizons, while teaching them about their capacities as philanthropists – one penny at a time. Pennies for Peace is a program out of the Central Asia Institute (CAI), founded by Greg Mortenson – author of the #1 New YorK Times best seller, Three Cups of Tea. Since 1996, CAI has built nearly 100 schools in Afghanistan and PaKistan, which serve more than 28,000 students – over 14,000 of them are girls who normally are not offered an education in this region. How can a penny bring peace? It doesn’t buy much in our community. However, in the villages of PaKistan and Afghanistan, a penny can buy a pencil, start an education, and transform a life. In addition, this program connects to the 3rd Graders’ social studies unit - Diversity. Being an affective communal, national and global citizen will provide students with a sense of inclusion, supporting their positive life-long learning. The 3rd grade as a whole was introduced to the campaign and its’ global connections through an informative power point presentation with photographs and a video explaining the important features, places, and people involved in Pennies of Peace. The 3rd graders were divided in four groups and worked on the following activities: creating a summary of the text Listen To The Wind (the picture book version of Three Cups of Tea), writing letters to their 7th Grade Pen Pals sharing their knowledge about Pennies for Peace, constructing a comparative essay about Narragansett Elementary and the Korphe School in Pakistan, and helping to design/decorate a bulletin board showcasing the children of Korphe, Greg Mortenson’s story, and the KaraKoram Mountains in PaKistan.
