  • Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 by Jeffery S
Delightfulee Jeffrey S. McMillan University of Michigan Press Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 By Jeffery S. McMillan This is an annotated listing of all known Lee Morgan performances and all recordings (studio, live performances, broadcasts, telecasts, and interviews). The titles of studio recordings are given in bold and preceded by the name of the session leader. Recordings that appear to be lost are prefaced with a single asterisk in parentheses: (*). Recordings that have been commercially issued have two asterisks: **. Recordings that exist on tape but have never been commercially released have two asterisks in parentheses: (**). Any video footage known to survive is prefaced with three asterisks: ***. Video footage that was recorded but appears to now be lost is prefaced with three asterisks in parentheses: (***). On numerous occasions at Slugs’ Saloon in Manhattan, recording devices were set up on the stage and recorded Morgan’s performances without objection from the trumpeter. So far, none of these recordings have come to light. The information herein is a collation of data from newspapers, periodicals, published and personal interviews, discographies, programs, pamphlets, and other chronologies of other artists. Morgan’s performances were rarely advertised in most mainstream papers, so I drew valuable information primarily from African-American newspapers and jazz periodicals, which regularly carried ads for nightclubs and concerts. Entertainment and nightlife columnists in the black press, such as “Woody” McBride, Masco Young, Roland Marsh, Jesse Walker, Art Peters, and Del Shields, provided critical information, often verifying the personnel of an engagement or whether an advertised appearance occurred or was cancelled. Newspapers that I used include the Baltimore Afro-American (BAA), Cleveland Call & Post (C&P), Chicago Defender (CD), New Jersey Afro-American (NJAA), New York Amsterdam News (NYAN), Philadelphia Tribune (PT), and Pittsburgh Courier (PC).

  • Debate Between the President and Former Vice President Walter F
Debate Between the President and Former Vice President Walter F. Mondale in Kansas City, Missouri October 21, 1984 Ms. Ridings. Good evening from the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. I am Dorothy Ridings, the president of the League of Women Voters, the sponsor of this final Presidential debate of the 1984 campaign between Republican Ronald Reagan and Democrat Walter Mondale. Our panelists for tonight's debate on defense and foreign policy issues are Georgie Anne Geyer, syndicated columnist for Universal Press Syndicate; Marvin Kalb, chief diplomatic correspondent for NBC News; Morton Kondracke, executive editor of the New Republic magazine; and Henry Trewhitt, diplomatic correspondent for the Baltimore Sun. Edwin Newman, formerly of NBC News and now a syndicated columnist for King Features, is our moderator. Ed. Mr. Newman. Dorothy Ridings, thank you. A brief word about our procedure tonight. The first question will go to Mr. Mondale. He'll have 2\1/2\ minutes to reply. Then the panel member who put the question will ask a followup. The answer to that will be limited to 1 minute. After that, the same question will be put to President Reagan. Again, there will be a followup. And then each man will have 1 minute for rebuttal. The second question will go to President Reagan first. After that, the alternating will continue. At the end there will be 4-minute summations, with President Reagan going last. We have asked the questioners to be brief. Let's begin. Ms. Geyer, your question to Mr. Mondale. Central America Ms. Geyer. Mr. Mondale, two related questions on the crucial issue of Central America.

  • The Cooker (Blue Note)
Lee Morgan The Cooker (Blue Note) The Cooker Lee Morgan, trumpet; Pepper Adams, baritone sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; Philly Joe Jones, drums. 1. A Night In Tunisia (Dizzy Gillespie) 9:22 Produced by ALFRED LION 2. Heavy Dipper (Lee Morgan) 7:05 Cover Photo by FRANCIS WOLFF 3. Just One Of Those Things (Cole Porter) 7:15 Cover Design by REID MILES 4. Lover Man (Ramirez-Davis-Sherman) 6:49 Recording by RUDY VAN GELDER 5. New-Ma (Lee Morgan) 8:13 Recorded on September 29, 1957 Lee Morgan, not yet twenty years old at this writing, is here represented for the fifth time as the leader of a Blue Note recording session. His fantastically rapid growth (technically and musically) as witness previous efforts, along with this one, places him beyond the "upcoming" or "potential" status into the ranks of those whose potential has been realized. Lee stands, right now, as one of the top trumpet players in modern jazz. As the title states, Lee is a "Cooker." He plays hot. His style, relating to the Gillespie- Navarro-Brown school, is strong and vital. There is enthusiasm in his music. A kind of "happy to be playing" feeling that is immediately communicated to the listener. Lee's later three Blue Note offerings have been set within the sparkling context of tunes written, mostly, by the provocative Benny Golson. Herein he reverts back to the format of his first recording, playing in a less "strict" atmosphere and just plain wailing throughout. "A Night In Tunisia" (Dizzy's tune which has been lee's showcase vehicle since he joined the Gillespie organization) leads off the set.

  • ʻso This Guy Walks Into a Bar...ʼ - Great Intros I Have Known (Blog 3/8/11)
ʻSo This Guy Walks Into A Bar...ʼ - Great Intros I Have Known (Blog 3/8/11) I recently read an interview (http://www.jazzwax.com/2009/04/interview-billy-taylor- part-1.html) with jazz piano great Billy Taylor, reposted as a memorial (Taylor died on December 29th of last year). In it, Taylor mentions how, as a young pianist, he used the chord voicing from Duke Ellingtonʼs piano intro to ʻIn A Mellow Toneʼ as his ʻbasis for harmonizing behind horn playersʼ and ʻbuilt a whole style on that approachʼ which eventually got him a gig with Ben Webster. This reminded me of how piano intros in the jazz tradition often encapsulate important concepts, and how often theyʼve helped me learn and re-learn chord voicings. I originally learned the ʻMellow Toneʼ intro on quartet gig with tenor saxophonist Alex Stewart, who gave me a written score for it. Itʼs been more than ten years since that gig, but thanks to Alexʼs score, Iʼve played the intro from memory many times when the tune has come up on gigs. The Taylor interview, along with a revisiting of the original recording, made me aware that while my memory has retained the chord structure of the intro, Iʼve been doing a different voicing than Duke. The intro in its original form can be turned into a useful exercise for practicing 3-7-9 voicings of dominant chords in all keys, descending chromatically from A flat. Here, in no particular order, are piano intros which have contained valuable lessons to which Iʼve returned over and over: - The Richie Powell intro to Clifford Brownʼs Joy Spring: this is a kind of etude in the major 6th voicing, which Powell moves through seven different transpositions before running a series of major 6ths alternating with dominant chords (Eb6-D7-Db6-C7b9) which, coincidentally, form the basis of another great intro: - Wynton Kellyʼs intro to ʻOn Green Dolphin Streetʼ on Kelly Blue.
