Installing the LANshare Ethernet Client Software

The LANshare Windows 2000 Ethernet client software allows you to log in to the LANserver, to mount accessible workspaces, and to read and write media to those work- spaces in real time.

You can install the Ethernet client software from the MediaNet Release CD-ROM or, if enabled by the work- group administrator, from a shared directory on the LANserver.

The Connection Manager allows you to configure the starting drive letter for mounting MediaNet workspaces. For instance, if you configure a starting drive letter of J:, and you mount four workspaces, they will be assigned the drive letters J:, K:, L:, and M:. This allows you to pre- vent MediaNet workspaces from being assigned drive let- ters you want reserved for other uses.

See the Samba application note on the Avid Customer Support Knowledge Center for more information. n Windows NT and SGI clients are by definition nonediting clients. Windows 2000 and Macintosh clients are consid- ered nonediting clients if they are not running the Ether- net client software.

Windows 2000 and Windows NT Nonediting Clients

On Windows 2000 and Windows NT nonediting clients, you connect to a workspace shared by a LANserver by mapping a network drive. This network drive mapping is identical to the mapping you do for any shared directory in a Windows environment. The workspaces you want to map must already be mounted and shared on the LANserver.

Macintosh Nonediting Clients

Macintosh clients cannot connect to the LANserver with- out installing additional software (DAVE™) to allow them to see the Windows network. You can purchase copies of DAVE directly from the manufacturer, Thursby Software Systems, Inc., or from most Macintosh software suppliers. Install the software onto each Macintosh system you will use as a nonediting Ethernet client. See the DAVE applica- tion note on the Avid Customer Support Knowledge Cen- ter for more information. n Each Macintosh client needs to have a separate DAVE license to use the DAVE software. If two clients use the same license, you will have conflicts between these clients when they try to connect to the LANserver.
