4 MapleBlues August 2010 Kellylee Evans at the 24th WBR As always, The Women’s Blues Revue strives to introduce new (or new-to- bluesfans) talent and this year is no exception. The Women’s Blues Revue Band will be ripping up the stage with all the usual suspects but the first featured vocalist to be confirmed is someone who is not a household name on the blues circuit, but that will all change after she wins the hearts of the WBR crowd. A most-appreciated surprise from Quebec: a blues CD full of artists, most not associated with blues, who do an excellent job. There are some obvious covers but some originals, in French and English, and a template perhaps for some future projects. The proceeds go to the Montreal Jazz Festival’s music camp program and the students join in enthusiastically on the opening “Shake Your Money Maker”, done in fine Fleetwood Mac fashion. The main vocalist is Yann Perreau, and as with all of the vocalists here, he does a convincing job. You’d think they’d been singing blues for their entire careers but that obviously is not the case. Someone who is closer than most is the Cajun artist Zachary Richard, whose John Lee Sanders Bucket Full Of Blues Kevin Marcus Dillon Where I Was Born country blues version of “Midnight Special” is a PAO Self treat. “Aline” was apparently one of the first blues written in French in Quebec, in the ‘60’s.
