Throughout that time, the two teams played periodically in non-conference Mar. 11-14 at Southland Conference Tournament affairs before restartting their conference rivalry in the late 90s when Lamar rejoined the league in the late 90s. Home games against the Cardinals have drawn half of the Cowboys’ top 10 crowds since playing in Burton Coliseum. When games were played at the Lake Charles Civic Center, the arena would be loaded with both McNeese and Lamar fans * - Southland Conference games each year. But on Saturday, something rare will take place when THREE current and former McNeese head coaches will be on the sideline at the same time. In addition to current Cowboys’ head coach Dave Simmons, former McNeese head coach and current assistant Steve Welch (1987-94) will be joined by for Cowboys’ skipper and current Lamar head coach Tic Price (2001-06). Welch and Price are the only head coaches to take the Cowboys to the NCAA Tournament - Welch in 1989 and Price in 2002, while Simmons led McNeese to the 2011 NIT.
