Dear Visitor,

Welcome to & West Open Studios 2012, our annual open art event that celebrates the remarkable artistic talent to be found in this beautiful part of the West Country. Huge thanks go to our Main Sponsor this year - art and collectables insurance broker, Philippa Levy & Associates, whose generosity has been greatly appreciated.

Everyone is welcome to attend the launch party for the Open Studios, which will take place at the Bull Hotel, East Street, Bridport, on Thursday 9th August from 6.30pm to 9.00pm, and features “Six by Nine” - an exhibition of small works by participating artists. There will also be a short presentation by our Launch Sponsors, Artolo - an exciting new online Art service that offers “the visual art world reinvented, rebooted and made accessible to all”.

This year our open studios are one of the headline events of the Spirit of Bridport’s first Festival of Culture, which runs from 11 to 27 August 2012. Our opening times have therefore been extended from the usual 3 days over the August Bank Holiday weekend, to a full 7 days over all three weekends of the Festival of Culture. This will give visitors plenty of time to explore the many diverse studios taking part in the towns, villages and hamlets across West Dorset.

We hope this longer event will give visitors more time to explore the rich artistic culture that we are lucky to have here in Bridport and its surrounding areas. You’ll find a wide variety of art on display, from well-known names to emerging artists and keen new-comers. Works are on show in studios, galleries and even in the artist’s homes. So don’t be shy! Open Studio events are designed to bring the public into the artists’ workplace, to help you to experience the creative process first hand and maybe even give you a glimpse into the mind of the artist. So whatever your taste in art, we’re sure you’ll find something to enjoy.

Many thanks go to all those involved behind the scenes for making this event possible. Special thanks to Fergus Byrne at the Marshwood Vale Magazine for his most valued contribution, to the Bull Hotel for hosting our launch event, as well as to all our supporters and to all the artists who have volunteered their time to help in other ways.

And of course, thanks to you, our visitors, for helping to support this event and our remarkable art community. We look forward to showing you what we’ve been up to!
