There is NO entry fee for the event. If you have been knocked out in the qualifying event, then you will have Wednesday off for relaxing and sightseeing before this event begins. The event is open to all participants in the Juniors, Youngsters and Girls who have not qualified for the semifinals. SESSION TIMES Match 1 10:00 14 Boards – same as Semifinals Match 2 13:00 14 Boards – same as Semifinals Match 3 15:30 14 Boards – same as Semifinals Match 4 17:55 14 Boards – same as Semifinals Match 5 10:30 14 Boards – same as Finals Match 6 14:00 14 Boards – same as Finals Match 7 16:50 14 Boards – same as Finals FORMAT Seven-round Swiss Tournament comprising 14-board matches. The leader at the end of round seven will be declared the winner. Ties will be broken using the same criteria as the Main Events. ENTRY CRITERIA All players from the Juniors, Youngsters and Girls events are eligible to enter in ANY combination of country and ages. For clarity, a team can comprise girls, youngsters and juniors from a combination of countries. ENTRY Entries will close at 18:00 on Wednesday 1st August 2012 and should be made through one of the directors. All teams including quarterfinalists who intend to play should enter, and should the team advance to the semifinals, then the organisers will withdraw their entry. So if you are a quarterfinalist and wish hhto play in the Transnational Teams if you lose your quarterfinal, you should pre-enter the Transnationals even though the quarterfinals have not been completed. Precious gold went to Israelis Ehud Friedlander and Inon Liran, winners of the Red Bull Open Pairs. The Senior Pairs title went to Henky Lasut and Eddy Manoppo of Indonesia. Champions of the Women’s Pairs are Shu Liu and Tao Zhou. An interesting note in the Open Pairs is that the average age of the gold, silver and bronze medal winners is 33. The squad, with Malcolm Brachman as non-playing captain, is Mike Passell, Eddie Wold, Geoff Hampson and Eric Greco. With Brachman playing last year, they won the event. Brachman is ill and did not attend the Fall NABC. Brachman, the leaders after the first day, ended the second day of qualifying with a score of 34.50. On a sunny February morning in the Gold Coast, I sit down with President Rona to hear his thoughts on topics ranging from the Olympic movement and the cheating scandal through to youth bridge and the future of the game. This is not Rona’s first visit to Australia. This time, Rona has come at the invitation of the organiser of the 5th Commonwealth Nations Bridge Competition. While in Australia, he will also be continuing negotiations with Bruce Neill, President of the Australian Bridge Federation, about Australia potentially hosting a future WBF world championship. Mr Gianarrigo Rona being interviewed by Liam Milne Recently, the WBF has come under fire for various reasons. V. 2018 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DISCUSSION Al Levy reported that things are moving along. WBF have added a 2-day Swiss opposite the third and fourth days of the Rosenblum. Teams eliminated from the Rosenblum will be eligible to play in the Swiss with no additional entry fee. Other teams may also enter the Swiss. Hotel reservations are on track. Discussion of WBF System card requirement. It is required by the WBF Conditions of Contest, but there isn’t clear information about how well the requirement will be enforced.

Zeng accepted a special award for Jiang Zemin, former president of China and a supporter of bridge. Boosted by the power of new sponsors and the players’ enduring enthusiasm for their game, the 14th Red Bull World Bridge Series got off to a rousing start that culminated with the presentation of a major award. Just after WBF President Gianarrigo Rona presented a special medallion to Zeng Peiyan, president of the WBF Congress, Rona was joined on stage by President Emeritus José Damiani. The two WBF executives then revealed a large crystal trophy awarded to Jiang Zemin, former president of the People’s Republic of China and a strong advocate for bridge. Jiang was not present, but Rona said the award – for the most important living bridge personality – was presented in 1989 to Deng Xiaoping, the leader of China from 1978 to 1992, when he retired. He died in 1997. Les projecteurs sont éteints mais la fête n’est pas finie. Les championnats du monde de Lyon resteront à la fois un magnifique souvenir, une source de joie et de fierté. Nous pouvons être fiers, d’abord, d’avoir offert au monde du bridge une organisation qui a été jugée par de nombreux joueurs étrangers, de Chip Martel à Sabine Auken, comme « la meilleure qu’ils ont eu l’occasion de connaître en dizaines d’années de compétition ». Nous avions de beaux atouts dans notre manche. La Cité internationale s’est révélée un lieu idéal pour jouer au bridge. De vastes aires de jeu, une maîtrise sans faille des nouvelles technologies et la grande compétence des équipes de la Fédération mondiale et de la Fédération française ont offert à tous les participants un confort et un ensemble de services inédits pour une compétition de cette ampleur. Parmi les nombreux artisans de ce succès, je voudrais remercier les deux cents bénévoles lyonnais qui ont accompli un travail formidable.
