4 Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Real Sociedad de Fútbol Wednesday 2 October 2013 - 20.45CET, (20.45 local time) Match press kit BayArena, Leverkusen Match background

Real Sociedad de Fútbol will face German opposition for the first time in more than 24 years when Bayer 04 Leverkusen host Jagoba Arrasate's side on matchday two. • Both teams will be eager to make amends for losing starts in Group A, with Leverkusen beaten 4-2 at Manchester United FC and La Real suffering a 2-0 home loss to FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Another defeat for either would leave them three points adrift at the foot of the table. Match background • Leverkusen will hope for a considerably better outcome than when they last faced Spanish opposition, suffering a 10-2 aggregate defeat by FC Barcelona in the 2011/12 round of 16. A Leverkusen side coached by Robin Dutt lost 3-1 at home before a 7-1 reverse at the Camp Nou. • Earlier in 2011/12 Leverkusen had come from behind to beat Valencia CF 2-1 at home thanks to second-half goals by André Schürrle and Sidney Sam. Their overall home record against Spanish visitors is W5 D3 L5. • Leverkusen's last home European fixture brought a 1-0 defeat by SL Benfica in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 32. It was their only goal conceded at the BayArena in Europe last term, where they won two and drew one in the group stage. • Leverkusen achieved a 100% home record in their last two group stage campaigns in the UEFA Champions League, in 2011/12 and 2004/05. • La Real have already posted one impressive away result in Europe this season, winning 2-0 at Olympique Lyonnais in their play-off first leg in August. • Leverkusen's most famous European nights have come against Spanish sides. They lost the 2002 UEFA Champions League final 2-1 against Real Madrid CF in Glasgow, but beat RCD Espanyol in a dramatic two-legged UEFA Cup final in 1988. After a 3-0 first-leg loss, Erich Ribbeck's Leverkusen won the return by the same score before prevailing 3-2 on penalties. Team ties • As a player with Willem II, Liverpool FC and Leverkusen, Hyypiä won only one of seven home fixtures against Spanish clubs – 1-0 against Barcelona in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup semi-final with a Liverpool side who went on to beat Deportivo Alavés 5-4 in the final. • Hyypiä made his last appearance in UEFA competition as a player in Leverkusen's 2-1 defeat at Villarreal CF in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League round of 16, a result that sealed a 5-3 aggregate loss. Earlier that season he had featured in 1-1 home and away draws with Club Atlético de Madrid in the group stage. • Hyypiä's overall record against Spanish opponents in 16 matches as a player was W4 D7 L5. • Newly arrived at Leverkusen this summer, Andrés Palop spent 15 seasons in the Spanish Liga with spells at Villarreal, Valencia and Sevilla FC. During that time he lost just one of ten league matches played against La Real – 2- 0 at Anoeta in February 2012 when Rubén Pardo and scored. Last season he was an unused substitute in Sevilla's home and away defeats by the San Sebastian team. • Emir Spahić played in Sevilla's 2-1 reverse against La Real last December in one of 44 Liga appearances over two seasons in Spain. • Esteban Granero's Getafe CF drew 1-1 at FC Bayern München in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup quarter-finals and appeared as a substitute twice in Real Madrid's 2011/12 UEFA Champions League semi-final defeat against the same opponents. • Granero lined up against Sebastian Boenisch and Gonzalo Castro in Spain's 0-0 draw with Germany in the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship group stage. • Eren Derdiyok and Haris Seferovic are team-mates with Switzerland. • Derdiyok was a second-half substitute in Switzerland's 1-0 defeat against a Chile side including Claudio Bravo in the group stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. • Bernd Leno and substitute played against Iñigo Martínez in Germany's 1-0 defeat by Spain in the 2013 UEFA European U21 Championship group stage. Martínez also faced Guilio Donati in Spain's 4-2 final win over Italy. • Prior to the finals, Leno had helped Germany get the better of Seferovic in a 4-2 aggregate play-off win against Switzerland. • Both teams have a Gonzalo Castro in their ranks, albeit La Real's goes by the name of Chori Castro. Leverkusen's Castro has dual German and Spanish citizenship.

9 Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Real Sociedad de Fútbol Wednesday 2 October 2013 - 20.45CET, (20.45 local time) Match press kit BayArena, Leverkusen Head coach Bayer 04 Leverkusen: Sami Hyypiä Date of birth: 7 October 1973 Nationality: Finnish Playing career: Myllykosken Pallo-47, Willem II, Liverpool FC, Bayer 04 Leverkusen Coaching career: Finland (assistant), Bayer 04 Leverkusen • Twice a Finnish Cup winner with MyPa, he made his international debut a month after his 21st birthday before joining Willem II in 1995. In 1999 the defender sealed a €4.8m switch to Liverpool, where he won a cup treble in 2000/01 (FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup), adding the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield weeks later. • In 2004/05 he played every minute of the final as Liverpool came from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties in the UEFA Champions League showpiece in Istanbul. He was an unused substitute two years later when the Italian side got their revenge. • After 459 games for Liverpool (and a 100th cap for Finland), the towering centre-back signed for Leverkusen in 2009 and the next year he was named Finnish footballer of the year for the ninth time. • In May 2011, Hyypiä retired and took a role on the coaching staff of the Finnish national team before returning to Leverkusen the following April as joint coach with Sascha Lewandowski. • Leverkusen finished third in the Bundesliga in his first season, repeating the feat in 2012/13 before Lewandowski stepped back to a youth coaching position, leaving Hyypiä in sole charge. Real Sociedad de Fútbol: Jagoba Arrasate Date of birth: 22 April 1978 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: SD Eibar B, SD Lemona, SD Beasain, CD Elgoibar, Club Portugalete, SD Amorebieta Coaching career: Berriatuko FT, CD Elgoibar, Real Sociedad de Fútbol (academy and assistant coach)

• A former striker, Arrasate enjoyed a modest playing career which began in Real Sociedad's youth academy.

• Having failed to progress to the Txuri-urdin's senior side, Arrasate moved to Eibar and spent four seasons with their B team, where he won promotion to the Spanish third tier. Spells at lower-league outfits Lemona, Beasain and Elgoibar followed before he hung up his boots in 2007, shortly before his 30th birthday.

• Arrasate started coaching at regional Basque club Berriatuko before a switch to Spanish fourth tier side Elgoibar. Here his reputation soared as he took them to the brink of promotion on two occasions.

• Rejoined La Real in 2010 and began looking after the club's youth teams before advancing to Philippe Montanier's senior coaching staff. He helped the San Sebastian outfit finish fourth in the 2012/13 Liga, ensuring qualification for the UEFA Champions League play-offs.

• Montanier's subsequent rejection of a new contract led to the appointment of Arrasate. One of the 35-year-old's first acts was to guide his new charges into the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in a decade – thanks to a comfortable aggregate victory over Olympique Lyonnais.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Last season Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Mario Gomez for FC Bayern München on matchday eight in 2011/12. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 14 occasions, one more than Manchester United. • Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most recently Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record that was equalled by FC Nordsjælland last season. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
