Neshaminy Manor Resident Tom “Crazy Legs”Davis

Tommy “Crazy Legs” Davis is a resident on A2 here Neshaminy Manor. One very interesting aspect of his life is that he was once a contributing member of the original Bandstand dancers. He has fond memories of being a regular dancer from 1955 until he graduated from Roxborough High in 1959. He was recruited after befriending after he was called down from the audience to the stage, from there he then became a regular, and was dubbed with the moniker “Crazy Legs”. His Crazy legs danced the most popular dances of the time such as the Jitterbug, the Stroll, the Twist,

Swing, Lindy, the rock-n-roll, Boogie-woogie or Bop. His most memorable dance was with the one and only “Patti Page”. And also Rosemary Clooney. He would leave Roxborough High at 2:15, take the bus, then hop the El to the 4548 Market Street Bandstand studio where he would perform three to five days a week. Tommy recalls all the great fun and comradery with all the other young rock and rollers. During his two year stint he saw and danced to such performers as Bill Haley and the Comets, , , , Fats Domino, Fabian, Frankie Avalon, The

Kingston Trio ( one of his favorites) just to mention a few. He looks back on his time there with fond memories and wishes he could still get up to do the Jitterbug once again.

Navigating Early-Stage Dementia

Most of us have experienced forgetfulness. We lose our keys and phone or are slow to come up with a person’s name even though it’s right on the tip of our tongue. We may find multitasking more difficult, or we may react a little slower. If all of these things can be considered part of growing older, how do you know when memory problems become more than just the normal aging process? The simple answer is when memory issues interfere with daily life and related activities. For instance, forgetting where you put your glasses is normal, but forgetting what glasses are used for or how you wear them is not.

People who have progressed to mild cognitive impairment may  forget recent events, repeat questions and stories, forget planned events, or forget the names of close friends and family.

 have difficulty coming up with familiar words.  have diffi culty understanding verbal or written information.  become easily distracted and unable to complete a task without repeated verbal or written reminders.

A medical evaluation is a critical first step in determining a diagnosis and appropriate interventions. Dementia symptoms can be related to such treatable conditions as medication side effects, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, and depression. After ruling out other causes, a dementia diagnosis means the real work begins. The future may not be as bleak as feared, and the progression from one stage to the next can be slow.

Here are some measures to consider:  Seek professional help for intervention and support. The Alzheimer’s Association is a valuable resource (24/7 Helpline: 800-272-3900) as are local community resources. For people diagnosed with early dementia and their caregivers, the ability to talk to people experiencing the same thing is invaluable. Search for local support groups or check with your local hospital to see what they have available.  When memory loss begins, it is important to present the person with those things that are most familiar to them. Maintain physical exercise, hobbies and interests, faith practices, hope, and humor. Music is especially important because key brain areas linked to musical memory remain relatively undamaged.  Talk about the situation openly and honestly. Don’t exclude a person with dementia from the conversation. It’s important to remember that intellect usually remains intact even if memory does not.  Communicate with children in the family to help them understand and prepare for future changes.  Take care of yourself while caring for and about others.

5 Nutritional News continued Decide how much to make or buy Making a large batch by doubling a recipe will save time in the kitchen later on. Extra portions can be used for lunches or meals later in the week, or frozen as leftovers in individual containers for future use. Plus, purchasing ingredients in bulk is almost always cheaper. Determine where to shop Check the local newspaper, online and at the store for sales and coupons, especially when it comes to more expensive ingredients, such as meat and seafood. While at the store, compare prices of different brands and different sizes of the same brand to see which has a lower unit price. The unit price is usually located on the shelf directly below the product. Shop for foods that are in season Fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season are usually easier to get and may be a lot less expensive. Frozen and canned produce are also good options and may be more affordable at certain times of the year. Look for fruit that is canned in 100% juice or water and canned vegetables that are labeled "low in sodium" or "no salt added". Watch portion sizes Eating too much of even lower cost foods and beverages can add up to extra dollars and calories. Use smaller plates, bowls and glasses to help keep portions under control. Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables and the other half with grains and lean meat, poultry, seafood or beans. This is an easy way to eat a balanced meal while controlling portions and cost. To complete the meal, add a glass of fatfree or low-fat milk or a serving of fat-free yogurt for dessert. Focus on nutritious, low-cost foods Certain foo ds tend to be less expensive, so you can make the most of your food dollars by finding recipes that use the following ingredients: beans, peas, and lentils; sweet orwhite potatoes; eggs; peanut butter; canned salmon, tuna or crabmeat; grains such as oats, brown rice, barley or quinoa; and frozen or canned fruits and vegetables. Make your own healthy snacks Convenience costs money, so many snacks, even healthy ones, usually cost more when sold individually. Make your own snacks by purchasing large tubs of low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese and dividing them into smaller containers. For trail mix, combine unsalted nuts, dried fruit and whole grain pretzels or cereal; store small portions in airtight containers. Air-popped popcorn and whole fresh fruits in season also tend to cost less compared to pre-packaged items. Start a garden or visit a Farmer's Market A garden can be a lot of fun, especially for kids, and an affordable way to eat more fruits and vegetables. Plants can be started from seed or purchased at a low price. Another way to increase your family’s variety of produce is to visit a farmer’s market. Many communities offer the opportunity to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables that are in season for less money than you would pay at the store. Check an d see where the closest farmer's market is in your area. Quench your thirst with water Water from the tap is a low cost way to stay hydrated. Substituting plain water in place of sweetened beverages can not only save you money but also help you reduce extra calories from added sugars.

6 ALL ABOUT JUNE

M June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the northern hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours of the year in the southern hemisphere. It is the first month of winter in the southern hemisphere and the first month of summer in the northern hemisphere. June is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. . “Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.” Special Days ~ Laura Ingalls Wilder Best Friends Day June 8 Flag Day (U.S.) June 14 Birthstone – Pearl The pearl is the birthstone for the month of June, although it isn’t Juneteenth June 19 really a stone. Pearls are the traditional gift for a 30th wedding anniversary and for new brides.

Flower – Rose The rose, the flower for the month of June, represents beauty and perfection. Its name comes from the Latin word rose, which means “red.” It’s one of the earliest flowers known to man. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylonia around 560 BC, used roses to

decorate his home. In Persia, these fragrant flowers were grown for perfume oil, while the Greeks associated the red rose with the blood of Aphrodite’s beloved Adonis, the deity of plants and rebirth. Red roses symbolize love.

Animal of the Month – Turtle Turtles are reptiles that have a bony shell protecting their bodies. They live on every continent except Antarctica and are divided into land, aquatic, and marine turtles. Turtles are an ancient type of reptile, older than snakes or crocodiles. They live on land, but different types can swim in salt or fresh water. While turtles are cold- blooded, they are usually able to keep their bodies well above the temperature of their environment due to their high metabolic rate. Sea turtles can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, while the smallest turtle weighs in between 100 and 165 grams and is just a few inches long. Turtles aren’t loud, but they can make noises, including clucks or barks. Baby turtles are called hatchlings. Red- eared sliders are one of the most popular turtles to have as a pet, as they are quite sociable and active. In many cultures, turtles symbolize longevity, endurance, wisdom, patience, and innocence.
