ALAL AMANAALAMAALAMA CENTRECENTRECENTRE MUSCAT,MUSCAT, SULTANATESULTANATE OFOF OMANOMAN HH AA NN DD BB OO OO KK 0 OUR HISTORY – A UNIQUE LEGACY The name “Al Amana” is Arabic for “bearing trust,” which captures the spirit and legacy of over 115 years of service in Oman. The Centre is the child of the Gulf-wide mission of the Reformed Church in America that began in Oman in 1893. The mission‟s first efforts were in educational work by establishing a school in 1896 that eventually became a coeducational student body of 160 students. The school was closed in 1987 after ninety years of service to the community. The mission was active in many other endeavors, which included beginning a general hospital (the first in Oman), a maternity hospital, a unit for contagious diseases, and a bookshop. With the growth of these initiatives, by the 1950‟s the mission was the largest employer in the private sector in Oman. In the 1970‟s the hospitals were incorporated in the Ministry of Health, and the mission staff worked for the government to assist in the development of its healthcare infrastructure. The mission also established centers for Christian worship in Muscat and Muttrah. It is out of these centers that the contemporary church presence for the expatriate community Oman has grown, now occupying four campuses donated by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. After Oman discovered oil, having a newfound wealth with which to modernize, the mission's activities were either concluded or grew into independent initiatives. However, the desire to serve the people of Oman continued.

  • United Arab Emirates & Oman
Big Five Presents United Arab Emirates & Oman UAE & Oman offer an unexpected cornucopia of contrasts that when taken together mean an unforgettable vacation experience. From the dazzling gem of sophistication that is Dubai, to the cosmopolitan capital city of Abu Dhabi, to Umm al-Qaiwain’s long sweeps of beautiful beaches, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has quickly become a star in the realm of luxury destinations. Seven emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain, Ras al-Khaimah and Fujairah – joined together in 1971 to form a constitutional federation. Although most of the country is desert, it still offers vividly contrasting landscapes, from the Empty Quarter, the largest sand desert in the world, to lush oases, rocky mountains and fertile plains. UAE occupies a large sweep of land along the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, with Qatar to the west, Saudi Arabia to the south and west, and Oman to the north and east. The capital and the largest city of the federation, Abu Dhabi, is located in the emirate of the same name. Although UAE is known widely for its oil, wealth, shopping and sophistication, the country also has a quieter side that can be experienced in the desert of the Bedouin or the centuries-old neighborhoods, mosques and markets of Dubai. The cultural capital of the country is Sharjah, where visitors gain a glimpse of the past and discover opportunities for authentic interactions with people from fish markets to date souqs. The Sultanate of Oman on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula shares a border with the UAE as well as Saudi Arabia and Yemen to the southwest.

  • Discovery Guide About the Mountain
DISCOVERY GUIDE ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN The spectacular peaks of Al Jabal Al Akhdar were up-folded following a tumultuous collision of the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates in the late Cretaceous Period perhaps eighty million years ago. As a result of that cataclysmic upheaval, massive sections of ocean mantle and continental crust were thrust high above the land, creating what is known today as the Al Hajar Mountain range. As the long Al Hajar Mountain chain winds its way along the spine of Oman, ancient sedimentary layers of many colours contrast with dark WELCOME igneous rock in a magnificent array of colour and form.
