The University of Pretoria Camerata

The University of Pretoria Camerata was officially established on 19 March 1968. Its mission is to make a contribution towards the cultural development of the student corps and the cultural enrichment of the community by means of choral singing. The Camerata also endeavours to promote a worthy image of the University of Pretoria through striving towards the highest possible artistic standards and by upholding a code of conduct that meets the highest requirements of companionship. The Camerata operates under the auspices of the Department of UP Arts. The conductors, Adolf Theron, Willem van Tonder, Prof Petru Gräbe, Prof Johann van der Sandt, Christo Burger and currently the very accomplished Michael Barrett, have constantly upheld high artistic values. The Camerata currently consists of 76 members. The choir has won many national and international choir competitions, and has over the years, released many award winning albums. In July 2017, the Camerata will perform in Spain as one of 24 invited choirs at the world largest conference for choirs, namely the World Choral Symposium.

Michael Joseph Barrett was a member of the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir from 1992 to 1997. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from Unisa and a Performance Licentiate in Singing (2008).

Mr Barrett was a member of the University of Pretoria Camerata for most of his student career and was appointed assistant conductor in 2004. He has served as an adjudicator for national and international choir competitions and regularly presents workshops on choral music and pedagogy. In 2013, he was appointed as full-time lecturer at the Department of Music and conductor of the University of Pretoria Camerata.
