Feile Iorrais is an International Folk Arts festival based in the and region of North Mayo. The Feile explores the common themes between folk traditions of other countries, cultures and regions and the Irish folk and in particular the Erris folk tradition. We do this by inviting folk arts performers from those other traditions to the area and have them perform in the villages of the area and in that way promote interaction between the different cultures and the local people .

Hello Delia Murphy!

Carmen Cullen presents her show 'Hello Delia Murphy', a tribute to her aunt, the singer Delia Murphy, in the De Valera Library, Ennis on Tuesday 23rd May at 12pm. Delia Murphy, from Hollymount, Co. Mayo, was one of Ireland's best known recording stars of the 30s and 40s in Ireland. A revered figure in Irish music Delia is thought of today as being one of the major figures of Irish song. She was a mold-breaker and pioneer in her field and created a role for herself as an Irish female popular singer that, some would say, hasn't been equalled yet. She became a pioneering folk singer in Ireland and abroad in the 40s and 50s and established ballad singing as an acceptable song form. She was the first per- son to become a celebrity in this tradition and gave the Irish Ballad and folk songs the importance they hold in Irish and international music today.

Arán & Im

Celebrating the in an engaging, accessible way, through sourdough bread and home-churned butter…. The show is a celebration of language, land and local Irish food, with freshly-baked traditional sourdough bread for the audience to slice and spread with butter they churn themselves from Irish cream. Arán & Im , explores what makes Irish so unique and potent. “What’s the word for the lonesomeness of a cow bereft of her calf? Or, for the sound horses make when they meet after an absence?

Written & presented by Manchán Magan and produced in association with the Abbey Theatre, knowledge of Irish is not required to enjoy this show .

Séamus MagUidhir

Béaloideasóir, Scríbhneóir, Múinteoir agus Fíor Ghael

In commemorating the 50 th anniversary of the death of Séamus MagUidhir it is a fittingtime to commemorate his life, his work and his legacy. Born in in 1902, Séamus grew up in a world of storytelling. Myths, legends, folktales and superstitions were the norm and the Seanachaí was king. The Irish language was the language of the community. Séamus was able to combine economic necessity with his continued education by going to Scotland during the ‘potato picking’ season and returning to school in Doohoma during the winter months where his teacher Mr. Michael Holmes was a compelling influence. There, they were to develop what was to become a lifelong friendship. Séamus attended Coláiste Samhraidh,Tourmakeady in 1936 to train as a Múinteoir Timire. He taught in the areas of , and Ballaghadereen. Séamus’ first writings appeared in Béaloideas ; later followed by a series of articles in the Irish Language newspaper, An tÉireannach . These were published weekly from June 1935 to February 1937 under the pen name Sliabh Chairn. ! Féile Iorrais 2019

His first book, Dhá Chrannna Marbh , was published in 1939. An Marcach Dubh , published in 1940 was followed by Idir Talamh agus Tráigh published in 1953. Both were a compilation of a series of articles published in Scéal a Éireann , Irish Independent as well broadcasts on Radio Éireann. Séamus’ final book Fánaíocht í gCondae Mhuigheo was published in 1944. He continued his writings publishing a weekly article in The Western People using the pen name Préachán Néifinn from June 1964, submitting his final article in March 1969. Séamus’passion for the Irish Language, as well as his pride in Gaelic Traditions is very evident in his writings. He frequently harks back to a time when monasteries flourished and Irish monks were leading lights of learning in Europe. The ruins of many of the monastic settlements still remain in Mayo.

What better way to celebrate his work than to revisit them as well as the many other locations Séamus mentioned in his writings. Múinteoir, scríbhneóir, seanachaí, scoláire – bhí séoiltear a lán- bealaigh agus comhmaith le sin fíor-Chríostaí a bhíann, agus fíord- huine uasal. Go dtuga Dia solas na bhFlaitheas dá anam!
