KETTERING Intercom A newsletter for the Kettering Seventh-day Adventist Church Volume 36, No. 2 March/April/May 2016 Inside... Dear Church Family, ABC Deal of the Month..9, 10 God is doing some amazing things in and through our church these days. Consider this: Birthday Blessings...... 11, 12 Calendar...... 2 • Over 160 people are praying every day for our church, its leaders, and for opportunities to share Jesus with friends and family members who do College and Young Adult not know Him. In joining together in this daily practice we are following Ministries...... 3 the example of the church leaders that we read about in Acts 1: “12 Then Donating to KetSDA...... 8 the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went Family/Children's Ministry...... 2 upstairs to the room where they were staying.… 14 They all joined together From the Church Office...... 9 constantly in prayer, … [it was] a group numbering about a hundred and twenty.” Melashenko Sabbath...... 4 • There are approximately 50 Life Groups meeting regularly during the ...... 7 winter/spring quarters. Groups do everything from genealogy to crafts to studying the Bible. Surely there is a group or two for you! Sign up KHN Missions...... 6 now at ketsda.org. In joining together in Life Groups we want to replicate Lucid Moments...... 9 the early Christian church in Acts 2: “42 They devoted themselves to the Missing in Action...... 7 apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs Shadow Empire...... 4 performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had 45 Spring Valley Academy...... 8 everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the Who's in the Pew?...... 5 temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad Youth Ministries...... 3 and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” • Already in 2016 we have celebrated several baptisms with many more people this winter planning to make this public confession of Jesus as their personal Savior. Together, we are fulfilling the Great Commission from our Leader: “18 Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’” (Matthew 28:18-20).

It is an exciting season of ministry at the Kettering Church. Come participate in our shared pursuit of Jesus!

In His Love, Pastor Karl

Lonnie Melashenko presents the sermon, "Outta' My Way, Preacher!" at both services on Sabbath, March 12.

Revivalist Lonnie Melashenko still travels Pole to Pole (literally last year) challenging and inspiring lay people to realize “You ARE Jesus Christ to many people!” "It's time to change gears. For 172 years we’ve been on 'spiritual cruise control.' However, Jesus hates lukewarm 7-Up. It's time for every church member to recognize that preaching is only the 'store window.' But the windows don’t 'clinch the sale.' God needs salespeople!"

Bonus! Come for one hour Sabbath afternoon (after potluck) when Lonnie unveils a dozen new and extremely powerful witnessing “tools” for every lay person.

Join us for a four-night outreach experience with speaker, Shawn Boonstra, held at the Kettering Church. Each meeting will have a 30-minute video presentation by Shawn Boonstra, followed by a 30-minute discussion of the topic presented. The meetings will focus on these questions: • Why did the Roman Empire hate Christians? • Why did the early Christians have so much trouble fitting in? • Was the persecution against Christians actually good for the church? • Did Bible prophecy really predict that the Roman government would persecute the church? • What, exactly, are those 10 days of tribulation mentioned in Revelation’s letter to Smyrna? • Was it a good idea for the Roman emperor to step in and try to solve the internal disputes within the church? • If Christians really are Jesus’ followers, then why do they have disputes? Why aren’t Christians perfect? Begins Thursday night, April 28, at 7 pm Page 4 www.ketsda.org Who’s In The Pew?

The Harvey Family Shaen and Mindy met at Walla Walla College (University now). After finishing a degree in Business Administration Mindy worked at the Loma Linda Dental School while Shaen was in Medical School. They moved to Ohio for Shaen’s internal medicine residency at Kettering Medical Center. They thought they would move close to family in California after residency, but God opened doors for Shaen to join as a partner in his multi- specialty physician group. Now 8 years later they are happy with Shaen’s job, Kettering Church, and school. Their two children attend SVA; 7-year-old Ian is in first grade and 5-year-old Ellie is in "Early 5". The Harveys enjoy traveling, visiting national parks, spending time with family and friends, good food, and shoveling snow in the driveway.

The Marton Family The Martons moved from Mansfield, Ohio in 2014 for Mariya to do her chaplain residency at Kettering Medical Center. Mariya finished her Master of Arts and did her training at Ohio State Medical Center prior to coming to Kettering Medical Center, she now serves as a chaplain at . Edward has served as a pastor in the Ohio Conference for 14 years in Cleveland and Mansfield area. He finished his Doctoral Ministry in 2014 at United Theological Seminary and is currently the Youth Director for the Ohio Conference. They have two children, Levi (10) and Leyla (8), who attend Spring Valley Academy. Edward enjoys sports and Mariya enjoys photography. Levi loves Lego’s, soccer and guitar and Leyla loves basketball and violin. They decided to join Kettering Church because of the great Christ centered worship, the inspiring messages and for the great children’s ministries.
