The year’s major test for the teams led by Schroeder and Krikorian was the FINA World Championships in Rome. Growing Our Sport

If national teams represent the top of the USA Water Polo pyramid of excellence, clubs—through their outstanding age-group and masters programs—represent the foundation. Near the end of 2008, a number of committed former water polo players at McKinsey & Company offered their services to help examine the potential for growing water polo nationwide. Led by managing partner Robert Sternfels, McKinsey interviewed stakeholders, studied success stories in other sports, and ultimately collabo- rated with staff on a strategic plan to expand water polo in the United States on a broad scale.

Under the management of Disney veteran Scott Tanner, USA Water Polo set about reorganizing its sport development staff consistent with the new plan for growth. The goal was to offer water polo, for the first time, to beginning swimmers, as well as to expand masters programs, and to provide improved member communication, services and benefits. During the year, zones and clubs piloted trial programs for the very young, and a plan was put in motion to increase services to members. In 2009, athlete membership in USA Water Polo rose by 18 percent to 30,878, an increase of 4,635 members. Professional membership (coaches, referees, and club administrators) rose by 32 percent to 3,326, an increase of 815 members. US Leagues was an important component of growth, offering competitive frameworks around the country at a reasonable cost.
