CROSSLEY ARCHITECTS | COMPANY PROFILE | PROJECT PORTFOLIO 4

CAPABILITY STATEMENT | AQUARIUMS Create, Communicate, Connect.. Our Company Crossley Architects body of works is dominated by aquarium and oceanarium related projects both in Australia and internationally. We are passionate about Architecture and the interrelated connection built spaces have with the living world, people, our activities and aspirations. A building must accommodate, protect, activate, and inspire. We strive to achieve these fundamental principles with everything we design. We are always excited at the chance to combine a creative intention to achieve practical, economic and enriching objectives.

Aquarium Specialist Architecture The completed Aquarium is far more than a building. It is a series of recreated living ecosystems that visitors can engage with and interact with as an enjoyable family oriented experience. Crossley Architects are passionate about the environment and the messages we can convey through our aquarium work. With over 25 years experience in aquarium design and construction Crossley Architects lead architectural and exhibit design for major aquarium and exhibition projects throughout the world. We have been fortunate to collaborate with great architects on a number of our international projects. On every project we also engage with world class curators, marine biologists, aquarists and scientists working in very diverse fields to constantly redefine the possible and make each project extraordinary. What is a good aquarium? One which touches the visitor’s heart. Aquariums are a fantastic family experience. We build aquariums to inspire people, young and old to care for nature through understanding its beauty, delicacy, complexity and power. Aquariums are fun, they are educational and for our clients they are financially rewarding. It is simple to say that if this were not the case far fewer aquariums would exist today.

CROSSLEY ARCHITECTS | COMPANY PROFILE | PROJECT PORTFOLIO 5

CAPABILITY STATEMENT | AQUARIUMS Create, Communicate, Connect.. Aquarium Specialist Architecture As architects we design buildings but aquariums are much more than buildings. Aquariums have a life and story of their own. We don’t just aim to deliver our clients a great building, we deliver a great aquarium and this means it has taken on a life of its own. It can tell its own story. It inspires. Water and its inhabitants tell unique and profound stories. Very often an aquarium becomes an iconic building of its locale. This can be partly attributed to its architectural character. More importantly, it is due to the recognition of its place and how it embraces the local culture, heritage, traditions, the relationship to the local environment and the larger connections to the world which have been made apparent and relevant. Aquariums do this by developing a strong storyline. The aquarium storyline and exhibit are developed into richly detailed individual tank designs to suit a range of selected species of animals.

Artificial Environments We ensure the exhibit environments are designed and constructed to international standards and to suit the inhabitants and their species specific requirements. For major projects specialist curatorial consultants and qualified marine biologists are engaged to ensure highly individual requirements for unique behaviours and feeding protocols are incorporated. It is essential the environments are also designed to be maintained by divers, and carefully integrated with the aquariums life support systems. Underwater scenery has unique construction requirements and requires techniques that have been developed over many years and projects to replicate extraordinarily realistic underwater scenes. It can have no adverse impact to either water quality or fish health. Any underwater scene can be replicated including shipwrecks or other marine archaeological theme. Initial exhibit sketches are developed through to detailed sculpted and 3D printed models for communication to the client and for use by the rockwork and theming artists during construction.

CAPABILITY STATEMENT | AQUARIUMS Create, Communicate, Connect..

Acrylic Design and Construction The viewing opportunities and viewing experiences offered by the latest acrylic panel technology is truly breath taking. Tunnel based aquariums have been in existence for over 20 years with the first being Kelly Tarlton’s in Auckland New Zealand, which was opened in 1985. Increasingly large viewing panels are now impressing aquarium visitors around the world and expanding the immersive quality of their experience. As aquarium architects the options available offer extraordinary opportunities to explore and interpret the marine environments we create. Crossley Architects as Aquarium Specialist Architects through Aquatic Environmental Systems have recently completed the SEA Aquarium and Marine Life Park at Singapore. Their Open Ocean Aquarium’s largest acrylic window is 36m long, 8.3m high, 700mm thick and weighs 252 tonnes overtook the World Record from Dubai Aquarium. The project incorporates over 500 tonnes of acrylic panels in total, including 270° tunnels and a 6 metre diameter dome. The main panel was site bonded and annealed in a purpose built Bonding Room. This world record has now been superseded by another Crossley Architects designed project, Jiaolong Aquarium in Chengdu China. Their panel will be 40 metres long and 8.3 metres high. Curved and domed panels also offer unique viewing opportunities into large marine environments and are commonly incorporated in the aquariums design. Each type of viewing scenario has its own unique design and construction challenges. We have the experience to design and co-ordinate complex acrylic design requirements.

CROSSLEY ARCHITECTS | COMPANY PROFILE | PROJECT PORTFOLIO 7

CAPABILITY STATEMENT | AQUARIUMS Create, Communicate, Connect.. The Aquarium Storyline and its Interpretation Aquariums are both fun and educational at the same time. Good interpretation is essential to inform and entertain the aquarium visitors about the beauty and complexity of living marine environments and the importance of conservation. In some aquariums the exhibits are developed around a unique central theme. For example, the theme of Osaka Aquarium is 'The Ring of Fire', which explores the Pacific region and the zone of tectonic and volcanic activity which defines it. At our Resorts World Sentosa project the exhibit structure follows the great 13th Century Chinese explorer Zheng He’s journeys from China to the Arabian Peninsula to establish the ‘Maritime Silk Road’. Different aquariums require different levels of interpretation, often with information being communicated in more than one language and via a variety of media. New technologies are being incorporated into interpretive options as they develop. Today’s aquariums use graphics panels, audio and video content, together with multi-media and augmented reality applications linked to Smart Phone and tablets via the Internet. Crossley Architects design and incorporate interpretive options which provide amazing opportunities and linkages to extend the visitor’s aquarium experience.

Life Support Systems The aquarium life support system may appear to be another water treatment plant, but in overall design and philosophy the aquarium LSS is an inherent part of the overall living ecosystem and fundamentally different from a conventional pool filtration plant. Aquariums require more than just water clarity. Water chemistry, system biology, component material, turnover rate and even in tank currents are all integral to the health of the system.

CROSSLEY ARCHITECTS | COMPANY PROFILE | PROJECT PORTFOLIO 8

CAPABILITY STATEMENT | AQUARIUMS Create, Communicate, Connect.. For LSS design and installation Crossley Architects work with project partners who have developed and manufactured an extensive range of bespoke LSS equipment including Foam fractionators, Biological Sand Filters, and other key life support components. Crossley Architects designed aquariums have the LSS bound into the design from the initial concept. The relationship of key components of LSS plant and treatment tanks to the aquarium itself is fundamental to plant efficiency, operating cost and water quality. Aquariums are very energy hungry. Good aquarium design recognises this and develops accordingly to minimise the cost of ownership of the completed facility. The real proof of the life support system is reflected in the abundance of the population of the aquarium animals, their health and behaviours.

Specialist Waterproofing The quality of reinforced concrete and applied waterproofing systems are of paramount importance to the overall durability and lifespan of the complete aquarium. It is a major item of works coordination for every aquarium project. We specify only the best quality fibreglass reinforced polymer as the basis of any applied waterproofing systems. It is essential that the system have crack spanning capacity, durability and be completely fish safe and non-toxic to the marine environment.

Specialist Lighting The correct lighting is essential to world class aquaria for both the health of the animals and the quality of the visitor experience. CA work directly with a number of lighting manufacturers and actively pursue the latest technologies from around the world for aquarium lighting efficiency and durability. The latest LED technology provides significant improvements in energy consumption and lamp life from previous options. With state of the art controls the same fitting will reproduce the full diurnal range of light in the exhibit from moonlight through sunrise, midday to sunset and back to moonlight.

Tank Construction Aquariums are highly corrosive environments. The use of the correct materials is of paramount importance. Smaller aquariums and Quarantine tanks are routinely fabricated from steel frame and FRP composite construction. FRP fabricated tanks use a time proven technique and have been in service for over 20 years. Tanks of any size can be fabricated using this technique. The quarantine tanks for Grand Aquarium at Ocean Park in Hong Kong were each fabricated in 4 parts and are over 10 x 4 x 2m with a water depth of 1.8 metres. Tanks may be prefabricated together with access and maintenance platforms and life support systems as a coordinated installation.

CAPABILITY STATEMENT | AQUARIUMS Create, Communicate, Connect..

Managing Complexity Whether we are collaborating with an established design team or providing stand alone services, Crossley Architects deliver fully coordinated design combining architecture, structure, services and aquarium specialist works as a complete integrated package. Building Information Modelling (BIM) allows us to design, document and coordinate with the whole design team collaborating from the same virtual model. Our 3D parametric CAD software allows us to design, create, and publish our aquarium design and documentation to the client, consultants, building authorities, and construction management teams at all phases of the project. Different projects have varying requirements, but we now deliver all our architectural and aquarium specialist services fully in 3D including life support systems, acrylic panels and artificial environments. From 3D CAD we can print straight to our 3D printer. By managing complexity through BIM we deliver our built projects faster and with much greater levels of coordination and accuracy, which is better for our client’s bottom line.

CROSSLEY ARCHITECTS | COMPANY PROFILE | PROJECT PORTFOLIO 10

CAPABILITY STATEMENT | AQUARIUMS Create, Communicate, Connect..

Construction Crossley Architects have extensive experience in construction phase services and inspection of construction projects and of course aquarium specialist works. The aquarium construction process, flow of trades, allowance for unusual construction tasks and attention to specific details during construction are critical for construction program and budget. Excellent quality concrete construction is fundamental to aquarium construction and to the project’s long term durability. All aquarium specialist works have their unique particular requirements. For example life support systems require particular penetration details, acrylic installation in some cases requires site bonding and annealing and artificial environments are sculpted by artists in situ. These activities and many more make the coordination of specialist works with conventional construction the key to aquarium construction. The completed Aquarium is far more than a building. It is a series of recreated living ecosystems that visitors can engage with and interact with as an enjoyable family oriented experience.

The intrepid visitor can even 'swim with' the crocs in safety of the 'Cage of Death'. The see-through acrylic cage is lowered into the exhibit with Snowy or Bert and his kin to experience the thrill of being in the water only inches away from one of nature’s greatest apex predators. Underwater viewing via acrylic tunnels also allow visitors to appreciate the size of these magnificent adult reptiles, and pop-up domes designed into juvenile crocodile exhibits allow children to have their noses inches away from the baby crocs. Visitors pass through a 5 metre deep fresh water aquarium of large Barramundi and other Northern Territory fishes.

UNDERWATER WORLD MOOLOOLABA, AUSTRALIA - 1989

Project Description Opened in 1989 at Mooloolaba on Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast, Australia, this Oceanarium has been variously described over the years as Australia’s best, largest and most spectacular. The centrepiece of the facility is an 80m acrylic tunnel through which visitors are transported through three environments: a shark and predator tank, a coral reef, and a cave with its large groupers and cods.

An Ocean Discovery exhibit floor displays thirteen smaller aquariums varying from 1,000 litres to one at 20,000 litres. This space is supplemented with a large touch pool providing visitors the opportunity to touch and hold anything from sea stars to small sharks. Marine mammals are catered for with a 400 seat stadium giving visitors an insight into the behaviours of sea lions and fur seals in an entertaining style. Australian freshwater life focuses on life in a billabong (lagoon) with its Australian freshwater crocodiles, barramundi and specialty species such as the Australian lungfish. Underwater World owes its continued success to a formula of innovative, cost- effective design and although now over ten years on, the aquarium continues to command one of the highest quality tourist profiles in Australia. Crossley Architects are proud to have been involved with all three stages of the design and construction of Underwater World Mooloolaba through their association with Architects Ellick & Partners.

GUANGZHOU OCEAN WORLD GUANGZHOU, CHINA - 1998

On level one, the focus is on life in the sea. Level two introduces visitors to the world of freshwater. Life in a jungle stream is contrasted with life in a mountainous stream and lakes. Living at the boundary of where the sea meets the land is represented in the rocky shore aquarium and beside it, the mangrove exhibit. The larger animals of the sea are displayed in the Shark Aquarium with two large panoramic viewing windows. Sharks and rays, together with other predators, cruise past visitors’ noses just centimetres away. Leaping from the depths at over 7m, dolphins captivate an audience of 1,600. The dolphin and sea lion performance stadium is the first of its design style in China. Visitors are shaded with a membrane roof structure that provides them the opportunity to watch every show in comfort. Entertaining night shows are also catered for in this impressive all-weather stadium. Ocean World pinniped facilities are designed and constructed to international standards. CITES and APHIS certification was obtained in order to permit China USA exchange of Sea lions for the exhibit.

CAM CROSSLEY | CV Director BArch AIA

Professional Statement I enjoy the practice of architecture. It allows you to resolve complex spatial and functional problems with creativity and passion. Professionally and personally you never stop learning, questioning and developing your ideas. Aquarium projects are unique. They must communicate to people on many levels, it's important to understand the responsibilities involved. They are so complex, and the design challenges and opportunities they present are extraordinary. I've learnt a lot from aquariums and practicing a specialist form of architecture which is in a way a living thing, replicating and communicating amazing marine environments. The more we learn, the more we want to help conserve.

Experience & Expertise Cam’s architectural design is strongly influenced by his previous artistic career and is complemented by a practical approach to liveability, environment, material and structure. The practice of architecture is a passionate obsession. His architectural career has been dominated by aquarium and oceanarium related projects both in Australia and internationally. This specialised field grew from his extensive involvement (commencing in 1987) with the multi-award winning aquarium and tourism based project, Underwater World, Mooloolaba. Recent international experience includes projects in Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Copenhagen, Basel, Dubrovnik and Chengdu. This specialised field of architectural design draws together many diverse elements, public architecture, dynamic interiors, creating true ‘living’ habitats, severe engineering and structural requirements, ‘experience’ based interior design, complex life support systems, theatrical lighting and special effects, dramatic viewing concepts using engineered acrylic panel and tunnel technology, artificial environment replication and construction, themed exhibit, graphic, interpretive and multimedia design.
