How an May be Accommodated with Just such ClassBs as They Desire. During the present session there are more titan 90 daily recitations. This number does not include any of the Epecial branches. ARITHMETIC.-There are fifteen classes in Arithmetic. These are arranged in five grades. One beginning the work, designed for those who have never studied the subject. Two beginning and advancing rapidly. Two intermediate classes, beginning with compound numbers. Two beginning with fractions. Four review classes; in these the entire subject is thoroughly reviewed; they are especially designed to meet the wants of teachers, and those who are quite thorough m the subject. Tw6 analytical classes beginning with percentage, and discussing all the more difficult points. Besides all of these, there are classes in Com­ mercial Arithmetic, designed especially to give short practical forms for all business computations. Careful attention will be given to Mental Aritkmetic. The plan as used here in the investigation of these subjects differs from that of any otker sckool. It has been most care.fully and success.fully tested in many of our . common and high schools, which confirms our belief that it is just wkat is needed. The student is not only thoroughly drilled in the subject as presented in the text book, but ai!>o in numerous practical examples found in every day hfe. When he has completed tke work he. will be master of the subject, and can use his knowledge independent of BOOKS. · ALGEBRA. .:_There are eigkt classes in Algebra. Thesll! are arranged in four grades. Two beginning the work; two review classes, commencing the work and completing the elementary; three beginning the higher, and one commencing with "radicals," and completing the work, GEOMETRY, TRIGONOMETRY, ASTRONOMY.-There are two classes in Geometry, one in Trigonometry, one in Astronomy. ENGINEERING.-This course embraces all forms of Surveying and Engineering. It is the most com­ plete course established in any Western College. The finest instruments are used. COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT.-All the classes in this department are in active work. GRAMMAR.-There are four classes in Grammar. One for those who desire to begin the work; also, for those who have given but little attention to the subject. The others are advanced and review classes, designed for those who are somewhat familiar with the sub1ect. In these classes all of the different parts o.f speeck are taken into consideration, but E.SPECIAL attention is given to the difficult parts, such as Rela­ tive Pronouns, Infinitives, Participles, and Active and Passive Voices o.f Verbs. In connection with these classes, Analysis is so clear,!y taught as to render those who have never studied the subject tkorougkly_ a qua , . popular are the methods used in these classes that many come here to take the course in Grammar alone. RHETORIC.-There are.five classes in Rhetoric, designed for those who are familiar with the subject of Grammar, and desire to make a practical application of it-three beginning and two advanced-designed for such as wish to continue rhetorical work. In these classes especial study is given to the finergraces of writing, and to the delivery of essays and orations. COMPOSITIONS AND LETTERS.-There are regular classes in Composition and Letter Writing. These are designed for all who wish to acquire a knowledge of business and ordinary form of epistolary · writing. GREEK AND LATIN.-There is one class in Gr�ek, and seven classes in Latin. Two of these are beginning in the Grammar and Reader, and are designed for those wishmg to commence the study.

    Reginald Edwards McGill University Theory, History, and Practice of Education: Fin de siècle and a new beginning Abstract The history and development of normal schools is traced through a summary of events that transpired in France, the United States, Britain, and Canada. The author examines the roots of several systems ofteacher training and identifies specifie institutions (normal schools) that played an important role in bringing to McGill University key persons interested in the training of teachers. Much of the article is devoted to linking the diverse influences that culminated in the establishment of the McGill Normal School, the Macdonald CollegeforTeachers, and the Macdonald Chair ofEducation. Whilethearticle outlines the history of McGill's role in teacher education in Quebec and Canada, it also gives a broad perspective on the history of normal schools in Europe and North America, and their influences on teacher education today. Brown, then at the head of the Scientific Department of the North­ Western Normal School, of Ohio. We had walked up and down the streets through the rain for an hour, discussing the probable future of the school in which Mr. Brown was then engaged as teacher, when suddenly he said, as though he thought of it then for the first time, "l shall have a school of my own." He then went on outlining what he thought would be a successful insti­ tution, and wound up by saying that he hoped, if he could find a suitable place, and would work very devotedly indeed, he might possibly build up and sustain a school of 300 students, though that was setting the mark very high. Some of the college yearbooks and alumni directories are stored in our Closed Stacks. They can be retrieved in minutes and the staff is happy to do so. Elementary, grammar and middle schools? There are a few in our collection; see first section below. School #51 published a yearbook called the Broadcaster. Junior High Yearbooks are listed with the High School Yearbooks. Where ELSE can I find yearbooks? Try contacting the school, if it is still in existence. Many keep archival collections pertaining to their own history, often as part of the school’s library.

Several hundred students entered normal schools in Calgary, Camrose, and Edmonton every year to complete the one-year teacher preparation course. Student life in normal schools revolved around relationships between faculty and students. Normal school faculty regulated behaviour in and out of the classroom, supervised extracurricular activities, and oversaw off-campus accommodations in fulfilment of academic and social responsibilities to care for students. They aimed to prepare Normalites (as students called themselves) for the teaching profession and so reinforced existing gender and social mores—expectations to which students were largely content to conform.

Strickland and built in 1875 by J. Forin, was the second institution of its type to be established in Ontario. The rear wing was added in 1879 to house a model school. The College continued to train teachers for Ontario until 1974. While the general massing of forms, with central and side pavilions, follows the 19th century academic tradi­ tion, the use of disparate architectural details including the pointed Gothic windows, semi-circular Italianate windows, Romanesque columns and Second Empire roof, reflects a spirit of eclecticism.
