BOY IS PACO UNDERRATED TATTERSALLS BACK INTERNATIONAL SAYS O’ROURKE PHOTO COMPETITION A glance at the top ten sires’ list shows Paco Boy sitting in ninth International Thoroughbred magazine has launched a valuable place in the table. Along with the third-placed Dubawi, he shares new photography competition, which is sponsored by Europe’s the distinction of not being closely-related to any other stallion in leading bloodstock auctioneers Tattersalls. that list, and for all his success with the Classic winner Galileo Gold this year, the breeder of his most famous son, Brian O’Rourke, feels that he remains underrated in his current role. “I think he is still a little underrated, but I think he is well worth his place in the top ten and it doesn’t surprise me at all that he is in there”, O’Rourke told European Bloodstock News. Explaining how he came to get Paco Boy together with Galacuix, the dam of the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas and Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes winner, O’Rourke said: “Obviously at the time I was managing Stud and it was Paco’s second year as a stallion. I was a fan of him as a racehorse because he was so tough and consistent year in, year out. “To do what he did coming off an injury as a young horse, and then just to get better and better, was fantastic and he was at his best as a five-year-old. He covered about 130 to 140 mares in his first year and he just started to grow on me. “Remember, if it hadn’t been for Goldikova he might have won five, six or even seven Gr.1s. But he did it the tough way. He covered some decent good-looking mares in his first crop and I think enough of them went on and had the results to make him popular. “I saw some of the early foals that were born. I think Beacon was the first one born and he was a cracking foal. “Galacuix came my way and she was a lovely big filly. She had been a bit slow on the racetrack and I think if they had persevered with her she might have won a maiden over a mile and a half or two miles. I thought with Paco Boy’s speed and her stamina we might get something good. “There are not too many stallions who can produce a Classic winner in their second crop. He has a lot of individual winners and for me he certainly does it. I’ve sent another mare back to him this time.” O’Rourke prefers to keep the identity of that mare to himself for the moment, but he is particularly looking forward to seeing Galileo Gold’s full-sister, Choumicha, whom he also bred, in
