In the Children’s Peace Garden, we will investigate the intricate world of insects, create art from nature and explore the wondrous plants while making new friends. We’ll grow and taste from the famous pizza garden and cook using the power of the sun. At Mountain Flower Goat Dairy, we will spend time getting to know the goats and guardian llama. Campers will learn to walk the goats on leashes, make cheese and explore small scale farming practices, all the while learning livestock management and the nutrient cycle.

Our instructors shall provide a curriculum with the most current and effective techniques to create skilled and confident youths who will respect others, care for their equipment and be willing to help fellow sailors on and off the water. Our sailors will be expected to conduct themselves in the Corinthian Spirit during practice and in competition. All Junior Fleet sailors, whether their interest be in cruising or racing, should emerge with an enhanced sense of self-reliance, knowledge of seamanship and a solid foundation in the sport of sailing. An Overview of Junior Sailing Junior Sailing can be like any other full time sport such as baseball, soccer or tennis – what a child puts into it will determine what a child will get out of the program.

    Meet the Competitors: Annapolis YC Double-handed Distance Race R.J. Cooper & Courtney Cooper Cumberland are a brother and sister team from Oxford, Maryland and Panama City, Florida. They have sailed together throughout their youth as well as while on the Sailing Team for the University of Florida. The pair has teamed up for a bid to represent the United States and win gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. They will be sailing Tenacious owned by AYC member Carl Gitchell. Sail #501 Erik Haaland and Andrew Waters will be sailing the new Italia Yachts 9.98 sport boat named Vichingio (Viking). Erik Haaland is the Sales Director for Italia Yachts USA at David Walters Yachts. He has sailed his entire life and currently races on performance sport boats including the Farr 30, Melges 32 and J70. Andrew Waters is a Sail and Service Consultant at Quantum Sails in Annapolis. His professional sailing career began in South Africa and later the Caribbean and includes numerous wins in large regattas. Sail #17261 Ethan Johnson and Cat Chimney have sailing experience in dinghies, foiling skiffs, offshore racers and mini-Maxis. Ethan, a Southern Maryland native now living in NY is excited to be racing in home waters. Cat was born on Long Island, NY but spent time in Auckland, New Zealand. She has sailed with Olympians, America’s Cup sailors and Volvo Ocean Race sailors. Cat is Technical Specialist and Rigger at the prestigious Oakcliff Sailing where Ethan also works as the Training Program Director. Earlier this year Cat and Ethan teamed up to win the Oakcliff Double-handed Melges 24 Distance Race.

We are now well into our 2008 season and so far the racing results have been pretty varied with no real dominance in either the fast or slow handicap fleets. He has won many championships in one-design classes, the America’s Cup with Ted Turner in 1977, the infamous Fastnet Race and many of the world’s ocean races. He was a college All American three times and a two-time College Sailor of the Year. Gary was inducted by the Herreshoff Marine Museum into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in 2003. He is a winner of the Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the sport of sailing. He has been ESPN's sailing commentator since 1985. In 1988 Gary won an Emmy for his coverage of yachting at the Olympic Games in South Korea. He will be covering the America's Cup for NBC. Gary is the author of 18 sailing books, the most recent is Nantucket: A Sailing Community. Editor at Large of Sailing World and Cruising World magazines, Gary has also given nearly 2000 lectures worldwide in the past 25 years. He started his career as a sailing coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy. Gary is also an active cruising sailor. He has led ambitious expeditions to the Arctic, Antarctica and Cape Horn. He currently races his Swan42 – Mustang and an Etchells. Gary and his wife, Janice, have three daughters, Kristi who graduated from Harvard University in 2006, Ashleigh who attends the University of Maryland, and Brooke who attends New York University.

Wilcox, Water Resource Planner Martha’s Vineyard Commission Funded by: The Riparian Owners of Tisbury Great Pond Blue Crab Ecology Report/Wilcox 2 6/5/2007 Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus) Introduction: From anecdotal evidence, the population of blue crabs in the Great Ponds is highly variable over time. This is true for most locations where this crab is found. Unfortunately, there are no hard local statistics available on the population or harvest. This crab is found primarily from Cape Cod southward although in mild years it will be found off the Maine Coast and even in Nova Scotia. A large amount of research on the crab has been done for the Chesapeake Bay area and in the coastal embayments further south along the western Atlantic Ocean and in the Gulf of Mexico. The Chesapeake Bay probably serves as a good basic model for identifying the factors that affect the crab population from year to year because of its distinctly estuarine nature, similar water temperature and proximity to the Vineyard. On the Vineyard, the crab is somewhat more of a south shore pond denizen although it is found along the north shore ponds particularly Trapp’s Pond at the inner reaches of Sengekontacket Pond on the Edgartown end. The tidal connection between Trapp’s and Sengekontacket under Beach Road has long been called Crab Creek due to the abundance of blue crabs found there. This distribution probably relates to the crabs preference for estuarine water characteristics that are common to the Great Ponds either due to their large stream inputs (Tisbury Great) or their predominance of groundwater input while they are closed to the ocean.

    MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE GRADUATE My love of “all things Graduate” started I guess nearly 40 years ago when first started sailing at the age of 15. My first sailing experience was in an elderly GP14 and then a succession of Enterprises all owned and maintained by my school in North Wales. Very soon I decided I wanted my own boat but I wanted something just a bit different. Looking through the shelves of the school library I found a sailing book which contained pictures of an early “Dandy Grad” sailing on the river Trent … the self same picture as used by the Class Association when detailing the various design options. This boat looked modern, racy and just a bit different. I then had to set about persuading my father to make the “investment” in a boat. I wrote off to Mike Noakes for details and prices etc and he had to endure countless questions from this “school boy” up in North Wales. Eventually my father … rather than saying yes … gave some sort of innuendo suggesting that were I to do well in my “O” levels he would consider such a purchase. After all boats were expensive and a new Grad in those days cost all of £185; by the time you had added a trailer and various other “bits” the price rose to nearer £350 … WOW! So it was that after achieving my grades in 1967 that I persuaded my father to act on his innuendo. I recall that he and I drove from Stafford (where I lived in those days) to Nottingham to visit the yard of Mike Noakes and Wyche and Coppock Ltd.
