Home Tamilnadu Map Pudukottai District Profile Print PUDUKKOTAI 3/6/2017 Home TamilNadu Map Pudukottai District Profile Print PUDUKKOTAI DISTRICT PROFILE • Pudukkottai district is bounded by Thanjavur district in the East, Thiruchirappali in the North and west, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram Districts in the South and Bay of Bengal in the south east. • The District lies between 9º51’00” to 10º44'40”N Latitude, 78º25'30”E to 79º16'15”E Longitude and has an areal extent of 4651 sq.km. • There are 13 Blocks, 497 Villages and 4558 Habitations in the District. Physiography and Drainage: • Pudukottai district has an undulating topography with a gentle slope towards East­North East along the coast. • There are no major hill ranges in this district, except some detached patches of residual hills at Thirumayam, Kudimiyanmalai, Sithannavasal, Viralimalai and Narthamalai. • There is no perennial river, however Agniar,Vellar,Koraiyar,Gundar, etc are some of the seasonal rivers that drain the district. • The rivers Vellar and pambar flow in the N.W.S.E direction. Apart from these rivers there are approximately 5451 shallow inter connected tanks which are mainly rainfed. INTRODUCTION Pudukkottai has a familiar Historical background and it was formerly a Princely State with the title of “SAMASTHANAM” ruled by the “H.H.The Rajah’s of THONDAIMANS”. The present Pudukkottai district is encompassing the entire Princely State of Pudukkottai and parts of Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur districts. Pudukkottai district came into existence on 14.1.1974. The information is based on real experiences of the common rural people including 26 rural women elders, 13 rural men elders, 13 herbalist and 13 traditional healers with a total of 65 informants aged between 30 - 85 years living in and around 13 development blocks namely Alangudi, Aranthangi, Arimalam, Avadaiyarkoil, Gandarvakottai, Karambakkudi, Kottaipattinam, Kulathur, Illuppur, Manamelkudi, Ponnamaravathy, Pudukkottai and Thirumayam of Pudukkottai district. The study reveals that a total of 97 plants belonging to 55families have been successfully used as a promising remedy for curing various ailments of children.

    CHAPTER-II PROFILE OF THE STUDY AREA AND REVIEW OF LITERATURE PROFILE OF THE STUDY AREA 2.1 INTRODUCTION Pudukkottai district was carved out of Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur districts in January 1974. The district has an area of 4663 Sq. Km. with a coast line of 39 Kms. The district lies between 78.25‟ of the eastern Longitude and between 9.50‟ and 10.40‟ of the Northern latitude. It is bounded by Tiruchirappalli district in the North and West, Sivagangai district in the South, Bay of Bengal in the East and Thanjavur district in the North East. The population of the district is 16,18,725(as per census 2011). It is 17.02% urbanized. The district depends a great deal on the monsoon for its water supply. The district has a literacy of 77.96%. 2.2 HISTORICAL SKETCH OF PUDUKKOTTAI Pudhukottai was organized as a seperate district, on 14th January 1974, comprising the former Pudukkottai Division of Tiruchirappalli district with some additions from Thanjavur district. At present, this district is composed of two Revenue Divisions, namely Pudukkottai and Aranthangi and nine Taluks, namely, Kulathur, Illupur, Alangudi, Pudukkottai, Gandarvakottai, Thirumayam, Aranthangi, Avudaiyarkoil and Manamelkudi. There are 765 Revenue Villages. The area of the district is 4663 Sq.Kms. The population of the district is 16,18,725 (as per census 2011). The district depends a great deal on monsoon for its water supply. 1 Many of the villages are of ancient foundation. The district was one of the homes for pre-historic man. A very large number of burial sites found in the northern and western parts of the district attest this fact.
