Sugarcult Neelofer Lodhy, Editor 2006-2007 http://www.elsegundousd.com/eshs/bayeagle0607/SeptemberP19Sugarcu... Sugarcult Neelofer Lodhy, Editor After two years of hard work and perfecting, Sugarcult has finally come back to the rock world with their new album Lights Out featuring twelve new songs was released on September 12, 2006. The boys of the band have all had a busy life with the release of the new album, and constant touring with bands So they Say, Maxeen, Halifax, and the Spill Canvas. They recently hit the House of Blues in Anaheim on Saturday September 9, where they rocked out playing their new songs, and of course some Sugarcult classics. The show immediately followed a signing, where fans got to meet and greet the band by specially pre-ordering the album. First off with a little background information, the American pop punk band originated and formed in Santa Barbara in 1998. The band consists of members Marko DeSantis better known as Marko 72 (guitarist), Tim Pagnotta (lead vocals and back up guitar), Kenny Livingston (drums), and Airin Older (bass). Sugarcult debuted in 2001 with their first album Start Static. They then scored hits with songs Stuck in America, and Bouncing off the Walls, instantly booking them on the Vans Warped Tour. Later, after being signed with Fearless Records, the band came out with the album Palm Trees and Power Lines, and with the help of singles Back to the Disaster, and She's the Blade they became number one on the billboard charts. Finally a year later after the release of their live CD/DVD compilation Back to the Disaster, they are back, and better than ever. The new album Lights Out, has a lot of energy to it including a somewhat different but similar sound to Palm Trees and Power Lines. Fellow student and Sugarcult fan Marcie Giovannoni, gave her thoughts about the new album saying, "I think its amazing, and they totally have a new sound, and it's a lot more mellow than the usual stuff, and it seems as if they've matured and grown into their sound." This album definitely proves that they have matured and grown into their music because of the theme of their new album, which just happens to be sex. Some great songs featured on the album include Dead Living, Do It Alone, Made a Mistake, Shaking, and Hiatus. In my opinion, I think that these are some of the best songs on the album, not that all the other songs are bad, they are awesome too! The whole album just blew me away and I was really impressed with Sugarcult's new music, they've done a great job and you could tell that a lot of hard work, effort, and passion was put into making this album. Im sure plenty of the Sugarcult fans will be satisfied with what they hear, especially if they liked Palm Trees and Power Lines. With their new single Do It Alone they definitely talk about the theme sex, but in a very moral manner. Bassist Marko DeSantis said, "Many of the songs on the album are about sex (including Do It Alone) not the kind of sex between people in a loving relationship, more so the sex between people who find each others company as a temporary relief from their loneliness or boredom. So usually the lights are turned off, to make it less awkward." This statement basically describes the name of the album Lights Out, which seems like a very appropriate title for the album. Sugarcult has come a long way, and they're a great band. They've grown and matured with the release of their new album. The new album is amazing. It has a great sound, its something to listen to when you're having fun, going out, or getting ready for the day or night. It gives a feeling of comfort, and happiness, and I'm sure plenty of people could relate to the songs. Do not hesitate to buy the new album, its great, and definitely worth spending money on. 1 of 1 6/27/2008 10:30 AM.
