From folk to funk, reggae to bluegrass, and world beat to outlaw country, ‘Live at Juilliard’ offers free, family-friendly concerts each Sunday from 5-7pm, July 1 to August 5 in historic Juilliard Park. CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s Chapter Outline I. The Outlaws: Progressive Country Music A. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, mainstream country music was dominated by: 1. the slick Nashville sound, 2. hardcore country (Merle Haggard), and 3. blends of country and pop promoted on AM radio. B. A new generation of country artists was embracing music and attitudes that grew out of the 1960s counterculture; this movement was called progressive country. 1. Inspired by honky-tonk and rockabilly mix of Bakersfield country music, singer-songwriters (Bob Dylan), and country rock (Gram Parsons) 2. Progressive country performers wrote songs that were more intellectual and liberal in outlook than their contemporaries’ songs. 3. Artists were more concerned with testing the limits of the country music tradition than with scoring hits. 4. The movement’s key artists included CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s a) Willie Nelson, b) Kris Kristopherson, c) Tom T. BIOGRAPHY: WILLIE NELSON OUTLAW LEGEND Willie Nelson’s talents as a singer and songwriter have reached into almost every corner of country music for almost 60 years. During the 1970s, he and Waylon Jennings were considered the most important figures in the Outlaw movement. Born into the Great Depression on April 30, 1933, in tiny Abbott, Texas, he was raised by his paternal grandparents. He started writing poems at age five. His grandfather gave him a guitar at age seven, and he soon started writing songs. In his twenties, Nelson scraped by as a radio disc jockey and door-to-door salesman while trying to break into the Texas music scene. Neal) The progressive country music movement developed in Austin, Texas, during the early 1970s as a community of liberal young musicians and concertgoers with strong interests in Texan country music traditions and contemporary rock music converged on the city. Children of the Cold War and the post-World War II migration to the suburbs, these “cosmic cowboys” sought to get back in touch with their rural roots and to leave behind the socially conservative world their parents had created for them. As a hybrid of country music and rock, progressive country music both encapsulated the contradictions of the cosmic cowboys in song and helped to create a musical sanctuary in which these youths could articulate their difference from mainstream Texan culture.
