Blind Joe North Dakota's Outlaw Country Son I Am a 32-Year-Old Totally Blind Singer/Songwriter Born and Raised in and Around Blind Joe North Dakota's Outlaw Country Son I am a 32-year-old totally blind singer/songwriter born and raised in and around the Fargo North Dakota area. My music is difficult to classify because I blend country, punk, rock, soul and blues. I like to call it "real" music 'cause I play and sing from the heart. Most people, however, just call it good drinkin music. I believe that good music always comes straight from your heart and soul! The rowdy non-stop Country Soul that is Blind Joe is as infectious as a night of Jack Daniels and a few Hank Williams songs on the jukebox. Coming from nowhere to being the most successful musician in the Fargo-Moorhead area in a little over 2 years, Blind Joe has shared the stage with numerous top local and regional acts over the past few years, as well as national recording artists such as David Allan Coe, Craig Morgan, Bret Michaels of Poison, Jackyl, The Kentucky Headhunters, Michale Graves of the Misfits, Joe Buck of Hank III's band, John Lee Hooker Jr., John Hiatt and many, many more. Recording an album a year for the past three years, 'People Like Me,' and 'Soul Singin’ Son of a Bitch,' have already sold well over 4,000 copies. Touring non-stop all over the region, Blind has played to thousands in the past two and a half years, from bars to theatres to arenas, sold massive amounts of Blind Joe merch and become a staple in the music community. Gearing up for non-stop shows throughout the fall and winter months in North Dakota and a Southern tour this spring, Blind Joe is tapping his way quickly into the hearts and minds of people all over the United States. On 2016 I was a contestant on The Voice on Blake Shelton’s team. .

  • Outsiders' Music: Progressive Country, Reggae
CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s Chapter Outline I. The Outlaws: Progressive Country Music A. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, mainstream country music was dominated by: 1. the slick Nashville sound, 2. hardcore country (Merle Haggard), and 3. blends of country and pop promoted on AM radio. B. A new generation of country artists was embracing music and attitudes that grew out of the 1960s counterculture; this movement was called progressive country. 1. Inspired by honky-tonk and rockabilly mix of Bakersfield country music, singer-songwriters (Bob Dylan), and country rock (Gram Parsons) 2. Progressive country performers wrote songs that were more intellectual and liberal in outlook than their contemporaries’ songs. 3. Artists were more concerned with testing the limits of the country music tradition than with scoring hits. 4. The movement’s key artists included CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s a) Willie Nelson, b) Kris Kristopherson, c) Tom T. Hall, and d) Townes Van Zandt. 5. These artists were not polished singers by conventional standards, but they wrote distinctive, individualist songs and had compelling voices. 6. They developed a cult following, and progressive country began to inch its way into the mainstream (usually in the form of cover versions). a) “Harper Valley PTA” (1) Original by Tom T. Hall (2) Cover version by Jeannie C. Riley; Number One pop and country (1968) b) “Help Me Make It through the Night” (1) Original by Kris Kristofferson (2) Cover version by Sammi Smith (1971) C.

Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. Artwork by Sam Yeates, Rising from the Ashes, Willie Takes Flight for Austin (2017) 3-6 Introduction 3 This interdisciplinary lesson guide allows classrooms to explore the exhibition Outlaws and Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ‘70s on view at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum® from May 25, 2018 – February 14, 2021. Students will examine the causes and effects of the Outlaw movement through analysis of art, music, video, and nonfiction texts. In doing so, students will gain an understanding of the culture of this movement; who and what influenced it; and how these changes diversified country music’s audience during this time.

  • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.
