Floracliff Nature Sanctuary is a 346 acre non-profit nature preserve located in the Kentucky River Palisades Region. McConnell Springs Guided Tour Date and Time: Wednesday, June 3, 11 a.m. (Weather Permitting) Location: McConnell Springs Park Maximum Enrollment: 30 | Cost: $11

On this one hour guided tour lead by a Park Naturalist, learn about the history of McConnell Springs and how it has become an urban ecosystem. Two miles of trails loop around the sinking springs, vegetation, stone fences, and vestiges of historical buildings. McConnell Springs boasts more than 130 species of plants and numerous species of urban wildlife. After the tour, enjoy a box lunch on the patio.

On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, join Dr. McCorvey and the Members of the internationally known American Spiritual Ensem- ble (ASE) for a personal look into their 24 year musical history and a preview of their coming performances. We’ll meet each Member, hear their musical journey and how it led them to the ASE family. We will enjoy a few samples from their upcoming performance of Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert.

American Spiritual Ensemble is comprised of some of the finest classically trained singers in the United States whose mission is to keep the American Negro spiritual alive. Since its inception by Dr. Everett McCorvey in 1995, the ASE has thrilled audiences around the world with its dynamic repertoire ranging from spirituals to classical to jazz and Broadway numbers highlighting the Black experience. The American Spiritual Ensemble is unique in that over 90% of the members are accomplished soloists who have sung in theaters and opera houses worldwide. The resulting sound of this group is something that choral groups with two or three featured soloists cannot duplicate. The American Spiritual Ensemble has presented diverse concerts throughout the United States, Europe and South America and has toured Spain twelve times presenting more than 100 concerts.

Recent activities in North Korea and the Middle East have brought attention to nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. This class will give participants basic information about these three groups of materials. We will begin with an explanation of the basics of radioactivity and its effects on people. Then we will explain the differences between atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs, and provide information about the types and extent of the effects of these bombs. Next, we will describe the characteristics and effects of the main types of chemical weapons, with particular emphasis on those that have been used recently in the Middle East. One of Broadway’s most classic and beloved tales, 42nd Street, comes to U.S. cinema screens in the largest-ever production of the breathtaking musical. Filmed in 2018 at London’s Theatre Royal the production is directed by the original author of the show, Mark Bramble. This eye-watering extravaganza is full of crowd-pleasing tap dances, popular musical theatre standards (“Lullaby of Broadway”, “We’re in the Money (the gold digger’s song), “42nd Street” and more), and show-stopping ensemble production numbers.

The star-crossed lovers’ tragic fate inspired Prokofiev a remarkable cinematic score, from the delicate theme of Juliet to the ominous Dance of the Knights. Bolshoi stars Ekaterina Krysanova and Vladislav Lantratov wholly embody the two eternal lovers in Alexai Ratmansky’s stunning evocation of love at first sight.

Each broadcast will be shown at the Gatton Student Center (160 Avenue of Champions) in Worsham Cinema complete with 4K Digital Projection and 60-Speaker Dolby Atmos Surround Sound. Tickets for each performance will go on sale through the UK Ticket Office, 859-257-8427 or boxoffice.uky.edu.

31 WHERE CURIOSITY NEVER RETIRES The Donovan Scholarship is a program for adults aged 65 and older to take academic courses at the University of Kentucky. Donovan Scholars can enroll in courses listed in the UK General Catalog and in limited UK online courses. Acceptance is based upon available space, may require the consent of the instructor and/or have prerequisites. Donovan Scholars may audit courses for the joy of learning (exams, papers or other assignments typically not required), take classes for credit without working toward a degree or take classes for credit as a degree- seeking candidate. There is no previous educational requirement for Donovan Scholars not seeking a degree, whether auditing a course or taking it for credit. When working toward a degree, UK admissions criteria must be met. There is no limit on the number of semesters a person may enroll. The Donovan Scholarship covers tuition and mandatory fees. There are additional expenses that Donovan Scholars are responsible for including any required textbooks, materials, parking permits, student ID card, late registration fees, and applicable income taxes.
