Our latest Welsh Political Barometer poll repeated our long-standing question in which we asked respondents to rate political leaders on a 0-10 scale (where 0 means ‘strongly dislike’ and 10 means ‘strongly like’, with a Don’t Know option also available.) This question was asked about the main Britain-wide leaders for the Conservatives and Labour, plus the Welsh leaders of both those parties and Plaid Cymru. With our April poll having begun sampling before the Labour leadership announcement, our new poll thus present the first verdict from Welsh voters on Sir Keir Starmer - and allows us to compare his ratings directly with those of Jeremy Corbyn. As I have often discussed in the past, a first interesting thing in such findings is the proportion of people who answer Don’t Know for each leader. Though some respondents will choose this option because they are genuinely undecided – and some will bluff on a leader about whom they know nothing – overall the percentage of people saying Don’t Know provides a good rough-and-ready measure of their public visibility. There are at least two particular reasons for being interested in that this time around. As this is the first poll asking about Keir Starmer, it is interesting to see the extent to which the public have been able yet to form a view about him. Second, it has been no- table since he became First Minister that large proportions of Barometer respondents have failed to offer a view on Mark Drakeford; with the Covid-19 crisis having pushed him rather more into the public eye, has this changed? The table below shows the percentage of Don't Know responses for each leader (with in brackets the change on our last poll, in April; for Starmer, the figure represents the change on the April fig- ure for Corbyn): Leader % Don’t Know Boris Johnson 5 (-2) Keir Starmer 25 (+16) Mark Drakeford 24 (-16) Paul Davies 67 (+3) Adam Price 55 (+1) These sorts of tables normally show a gulf between the two main UK party leaders and those at the devolved level. -

But last night, to the fury of many in the party he appears to have sacked Angela Rayner as Party Chair and Election Coordinator. He can’t sack her from her elected position as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, but overnight there have been signs that things are coming apart. Andy Burnham, the Mayor Manchester, tweeted about Angela Rayner, ‘I can’t support this.’ Trouble ahead. I’m going to speak now to John McDonnell, Jeremy Corbyn’s former Shadow Chancellor and to Anas Sarwar, the Labour Party Leader here in Scotland. He lost two seats yesterday but he says the party are now on the right path. John McDonnell, first of all, I don’t know if you’ve had a chance to talk to Angela Rayner. Do you know whether she has been sacked or not? There seems to be some confusion this morning. JM: No, I haven’t spoken to Angie. Let’s be clear, I have no brief for Angie, I didn’t support her as Deputy Leader. I supported Richard Burgon, but when the Leader of the Party on Friday says he takes full responsibility for the election result in Hartlepool in particular, and then scapegoats Angie Rayner, I think many of us feel that was unfair, particularly as we all know actually Keir style of Leadership is that his office controls everything. -

REGISTER OF INTERESTS OF MEMBERS’ SECRETARIES AND RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (As at 11 July 2018) INTRODUCTION Purpose and Form of the Register In accordance with Resolutions made by the House of Commons on 17 December 1985 and 28 June 1993, holders of photo-identity passes as Members’ secretaries or research assistants are in essence required to register: ‘Any occupation or employment for which you receive over £380 from the same source in the course of a calendar year, if that occupation or employment is in any way advantaged by the privileged access to Parliament afforded by your pass. Any gift (eg jewellery) or benefit (eg hospitality, services) that you receive, if the gift or benefit in any way relates to or arises from your work in Parliament and its value exceeds £380 in the course of a calendar year.’ In Section 1 of the Register entries are listed alphabetically according to the staff member’s surname. Section 2 contains exactly the same information but entries are instead listed according to the sponsoring Member’s name. Administration and Inspection of the Register The Register is compiled and maintained by the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. Anyone whose details are entered on the Register is required to notify that office of any change in their registrable interests within 28 days of such a change arising. An updated edition of the Register is published approximately every 6 weeks when the House is sitting. Changes to the rules governing the Register are determined by the Committee on Standards in the House of Commons, although where such changes are substantial they are put by the Committee to the House for approval before being implemented. -

Andrew Milligan/PA The issue of Scottish independence continues to tie the Labour party in knots. Jeremy Corbyn’s pronouncements during a visit to Glasgow are the latest example of Labour’s difficulties in maintaining its traditional role as the party of Scotland’s working classes and liberal intelligentsia – particularly since the 2014 independence referendum. Asked about a second referendum, the Labour leader initially said he would not agree to one in the first term of a Labour government, “because I think we need to concentrate completely on investment across Scotland”. This appeared to bring him close to Conservative leader Boris Johnson’s “cast-iron pledge” against another Scottish referendum. Shortly afterwards Corbyn’s aides were clarifying to journalists that this was not a shift from Labour’s previous apparent position, that the party would grant a referendum if the SNP won a majority in the 2021 Scottish election. Corbyn confirmed as much in Hamilton on the next stop of his two-day Scottish tour. Glove me do. British Politics and Policy at LSE: The real SNP ‘peak’ is yet to come – if Conference deals successfully with two key issues Page 1 of 3 The real SNP ‘peak’ is yet to come – if Conference deals successfully with two key issues The cleavages created by Labour’s 2017 electoral performance and by Brexit have made the political landscape more challenging for the SNP. But if the party are able to tack successfully into the new political winds, these challenges can be met, writes Sean Swan, making the forthcoming conference decisive for the party’s future. The SNP annual conference will be held on 8-10 October in Glasgow. It comes as Alex Rowley, Scottish Labour’s acting leader, claims that Scotland is past ‘peak SNP’. Support in the latest opinion polls has the party on 41% support in a future Westminster election, and 38% for a Holyrood election. Meanwhile, support for independence languishes at 43%, which is 2% lower than the Indyref result. These figures are hardly disastrous: the SNP share of the vote in the 2017 Westminster election was 36.9%, and the party took 41.7% in the 2016 Holyrood vote. But there is a tendency to judge the SNP’s performance against the 2015 Westminster general election when it took almost 50% of the vote. The 2015 victory was the product of disappointed Yes voters, who effectively decided on a long march through the institutions, joining the SNP en masse in the wake of the 2014 independence referendum defeat. The 2015 victory was as close to total as it could realistically be, but failed to deliver much tangible progress towards independence. -

OUR DETERMINATION is to change Irish society through the broadest possible engagement with and empowerment of all progressive social forces – Irish, European and international – and through contesting elections and pursuing policies in government that further progressive ends. OUR PARTY is a democratic socialist party and, through its membership of the Party of European Socialists and the Progressive Alliance, is part of the international socialist movement working for equality and to empower of citizens, consumers and workers in a world increasingly dominated by big business, greed and selfishness. IT WAS FOUNDED from the trade union movement by James Connolly, Jim Larkin, Tom Johnson and others as a means for working people to organise politically, to combat squalor, ignorance, want, idleness and disease. These aspirations remain valid today. Despite Ireland’s economic wealth, class divisions continue to exist and many of its citizens continue to experience, from childhood, major inequalities in wealth, health and life chances.
