The value of making connections and sharing with others. The importance of self-care and personal well-being. To role model that it is ok to fail and to learn from our mistakes. To just do it - don't second guess yourself - take the picture. Little did I know at the time how relevant this conversation would be for the journey the school would walk in 2020. This has been a year of immense challenge for our school, from managing the impact of a pandemic and continuing to deliver an education of significance and excellence to addressing the call to take action in response to the allegations of racism, xenophobia and homophobia levelled against our school.

    Minister Motshekga launches History Ministerial Task Team Report The Ministerial Task Team Report into the introduction of History as a compulsory subject has recommended that History should be phased in incrementally in Grade 10 during 2023 and in Grade 12 during 2025. The launch was held at Freedom Park in Pretoria on 31 May 2018, under the theme: “Re-writing History from an African perspective”. Led by its chairperson, Professor Sifiso Ndlovu, the Task Team was established in 2015, and was provided with terms of reference to conduct a comparative international study to advise the Department on the possible introduction of History as a compulsory subject in Further Education and Training (FET) bands. This involved a comparative case study on compulsory History in 13 countries. The exercise is similar to an Africa-wide project being conducted by the African Union (AU) and UNESCO on History curricula across the continent and the relevance of the subject. Various possibilities were presented by the Task Team, including that if History and Life Orientation (LO) are combined, History content should be transferred to LO to reinforce the teaching of citizenship and human rights, amongst others. However, the recommendation from the Task Team was to introduce History as a compulsory subject in the FET phase, by removing Life Orientation from the FET phase and replacing it with compulsory History. It further recommended that the Curriculum and Policy Statement (CAPS), due to its serious limitations, be completely overhauled. Sentia-me nervoso. Quando Eentrei, havia apenas uma pessoa na sala, sentada com formalidade atrás de uma sólida secretária. Não se levantou, mas pediu desculpa pela sua indelicadeza em permanecer sentado. «Os meus joelhos não mo per- mitem», explicou, estendendo-me a mão. Os joelhos tinham 90 anos e per- tenciam a Nelson Mandela. Eu não estava ali para o entrevistar — a idade e o declínio natural impediam-no de conceder entrevistas —, mas ele aceita- ra conhecer-me, o resultado muito apreciado de vários meses de investiga- ção sobre os primeiros anos da sua vida. O encontro foi organizado pela Fundação Mandela e quero enfatizar a minha gratidão aos seus membros, não apenas por essa «audiência» com Madiba, mas pelo seu apoio e entusiasmo relativamente a este projecto, e pela simpatia e hospitalidade com que me receberam. Introduction For over two decades, from 1941 to 1961, Nelson Mandela was a member of the organized legal profession in South Africa: an articled clerk, a professional assistant, a sole practitioner and well as practicing in partnership. In 1939, aged 21 years, when he commenced his studies at Fort Hare University, he had arrived courtesy of Regent Jongintaba’s vehicle – in 1964, just more than 25 years later, he would arrive at Robben Island courtesy of a military transport plane. This is the story of Nelson Mandela, an Attorney at Law by profession and a professional revolutionary by evocation! Mandela the Lawyer Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 at Mvezo, a tiny village on the banks of the Mbase River, in the district of Umtata, and spent most of his early years at Qunu His father’s family were members of the royal clan and councillors to the Thembu king. They traced their lineage to King Ngubengcuka (c1790-1830) who had united the Thembu kingdom, which was a loose agglomeration of chieftaincies. Nelson Mandela was aged nine when his father, Henry Gadla died. Shortly before his death his father had arranged for the young Mandela to live with the Thembu Paramount Chief- Jongintaba, the regent of the Paramount Kingdom.
