Several waterbodies have been declared as natural wetlands in the country supporting the needs of community like water and food. In this study, 65 natural wetlands were considered including six sites that were identified as ‘Wetlands of International Importance’ such as Naujan Lake National Park, Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. There are 22 wetland types presented in this research categorizing the Philippine wetlands. Philippine wetlands are now facing tremendous challenges such as land use conversion, abuse of resources, pollution coming from domestic, industrial and agricultural activities, and climate change. This paper provides an overview of Philippine wetlands in terms of their characteristics and components, impacts in the ecosystem, and the challenges they are dealing with.

Here, we provide a limnological characterization of the lake – exploring its physical, chemical, and biological features. The data on lake morphometry were gathered using an echosounder; lower depth water samples were collected using a Niskin water sampler for physicochemical analyses while surface water samples were collected at five sampling sites for phosphate (PO4) analysis; and zooplankton samples were collected at several depths through vertical towing in March–April 2019. Lake Wood, located at 320 m above sea level, has an extensive surface area covering 7.38 km2 with a maximum depth of 85 m. Lake water comes from rainfall, small rivers, and groundwater and empties into the Dumanquilas Bay via its only outlet – the Biswangan River. Land use of the lake is predominantly cultivated land. Moreover, based on the trophic state index (TSI), the lake’s current trophic status is eutrophic. During the study periods, thermocline and oxycline formed at 15 m below the surface of the lake.

Cerilles State College, Mati, San Miguel. Zamboangadel Sur, 2 Environmental Biology Division, Institute of Biological Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines Abstract. A pioneering study was done on Lakewood, a freshwater lake located in western Mindanao, Philippines to assess its water quality and fish fauna diversity. The baseline limnology data and environmental conditions of the lake serve as bases to improve local planning, policy formulation and sustainable management of the lake. In situ determination of water quality parameters were done on depth- integrated grab samples using portable probe/digital instruments concerning water temperature, TDS, pH, electrical conductivity, chl a, and a depth profile of DO. Identification of the fish species caught was done to document the aquatic faunal diversity present in the lake in association with the existing physicochemical properties of the water. Depth profiles of WT and DO within a 10-m deep water column gave ranges of 26.6 (10-m) - 28.8 0C (surface); and 5.96 mg.L-1- 7.8 mg.L-1, respectively. The results gave no significant spatial variation. Surface determinations of TDS was 57.44 – 65.11mg.L-1, pH, 7.9-8.8; and EC, 0.07 - 0.09 μS/cm. Chl a that ranged from 0.6 to2.3 mg.L-1; and the BOD, 0.37 – 4.30 ml.L-1 both yielded significant spatial differences.

Locson 1Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Government College, Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines 2Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, Zamboanga del Sur *Corresponding author: [email protected] Date received: September 11, 2019 Date accepted: December 10, 2019 Date published: December 22, 2019 ABSTRACT In this study, research on the fish composition and abundance in the freshwater ecosystem of Mount Timolan Protected Landscape, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines is presented. The Mount Timolan Protected Landscape is reported as a forest reserved because of its watershed importance. However, studies on fish fauna on its freshwater ecosystem have never been studied. Monthly sampling of fish fauna was conducted in the four established stations in the MTPL from December 2018 to May 2019 revealed a total of 2,422 individuals representing 12 species from 9 families. Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index (‘H) and Simpsons Dominance (D) was found to be high with values of 2.59 and 1.02, respectively. Interestingly, this study revealed an established population of native of species in Upper Nilo stream with no other introduced species found. Monitoring study is further recommended to evaluate the current status of the fish species of freshwater ecosystem of Mount Timolan Protected Landscape. Keywords: dominance; ichthyofauna; introduced species; fish species monitoring; native species. INTRODUCTION Freshwater ecosystem to-date face challenges worldwide and there have been no comprehensive global analysis of freshwater biodiversity available compare to those recently completed for terrestrial ecosystems and even basic global mapping of inland water to estimate changes in the degree of lakes, rivers and wetlands is deficient (Myers et al., 2000; Dudgeon et al., 2005).

This study was conducted to describe the body shape variations in Poecilia reticulata from three selected rivers in Mindanao Island, Philippines. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics were utilized to analyze the patterns of body shape variations within and between populations of P. reticulata. 20 landmarks were selected and digitized on the left side of 90 males and 80 females adult fish. Relative warp analysis was conducted on Procrustes-fitted landmarks and the generated relative warp scores were used as variables for multivariate statistical analysis of variations within, between and among sexes and populations. Results showed sexual dimorphism in body shapes within populations of P. reticulata. Females showed downward bent body shapes, while the males showed upward bent, except for fish collected from Tubod, Lanao del Norte, where body shapes between sexes are in the opposite. Variations in body shapes between populations were also observed in the head, midsection of the body, caudal peduncle and insertion of the anal and dorsal fins. It is argued that the morphological variations observed between populations could be attributed to differences in environmental conditions in the selected rivers. Guppies, Poecilia reticulata (Peters 1860) commonly known as “million fish”, or “rainbow fish” are small benthopelagic, live-bearing fish, that are occupying a wide range of habitats, such as estuaries, lakes, ponds, ditches and canals (Page & Burr 1991).
