Commencement season has always stood out as the "supreme festival" A rich on Rochester's academic calendar, Arthur May notes in his history of the University: From earliest years, "Oratory flowed in full spate, the tradition at literary societies put on their finest performances, trustees convened for annual decision-making, and prizes and diplomas were handed out Rochester amidst a panoply of pomp and circumstance." Though the size of the graduating class h as grown from 10 men in 1851 to mo re than 2,000 men and women today, and though many other developments have reshaped the ceremonies, today's program, like 1851's, marks t he happy celebration of each graduate's academic preparation, and the hopeful prospect of new ventures.

The gowns have a long history Some of the features in today's ceremony date back to medieval times, such as the academic attire which recalls the gowns that were required dress at many European universities. Yet academic regalia did not figure into Rochester's earliest commencements: Both here and at other U.S. I hope you will be leaving this universities, wearing the gowns was thought to be snobbish and undemocratic, possibly because university educations were associated U niversity ready to assert your with European upper-class privilege. So for a number of years, only the president and the person who carried the diplomas wore gown s; the faith in reason rather than dogma, graduating class didn't wear them until 1892. in rationality rather than The hood's color is the clue inevitability, in the open rather T he most colorful portion of the academic costume is the hood, the than the shuttered mind . . .. color edging indicating the discipline to wh ich the degree pertains: White and yellow-gold for arts and science; orange for engineering; I hope you are going to be willing apricot for nursing; green for medicine; pink for the Eastman School of Music; light blue for the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Educa to stand up against the bigots, the tion and Human Development; and drab for the William E. who would demean your future or Symbols of authority rob you of your birthright. I hope The mace, originally a medieval weapon of defense, has in modern times become a symbol of authority, dignity, and privilege. English uni you will be ready to protest versities have used maces in academic processions for many centuries; Rochester's mace first appeared at the 1935 induction of Alan Valentine against life as usual in the face of as president, and h as been used in academic processions ever since. About unspeakable human tragedy . . .. four feet long, it is made of mahogany and hand-wrought silver. On the head, the seal of the University appears. becoming truly involved, making The procession your commitment real, and your T he academic procession, one of the most colorful traditio ns, begins with participants assembling on Eastman Q uadrangle, the symbolic cen determination to play an active ter of the University. The University carillo nneur strikes a march tune, and the parade heads down Library Road to the pealing sounds from part in your world unflagging. the belltower. As the parade approaches Fauver Stadium, the University Sol Linowitz, 1991 marshal escorts the president, provost, and representative of the board of 3

trustees to a reviewing stand where they greet the participants flowing into the stadium. Today's doctoral candidates and members of the University faculty are at the front and center of the procession. The doctoral candidates are wearing gowns in Rochester's d andelio n yellow and berets of soft, black velvet. The styles and colors of the faculty's robes, hoods, and caps rep resent all the learned institutio ns from which they have come. Following the doctoral candidates are the master's degree candidates, each school and degree marked by a banner matching the candidates' hoods. The outer four columns are the baccalaureate candidates; again each school is marked by its college banner. When the candidates have passed, those o n the reviewing stand join other University offi cers and distinguish ed guests and honorees. Signaled by the Wind Ensemble's fanfare, everyone in the stadium stands while the marshals, carrying mace and baton, escort the platform party to their places on stage. Then the Commencement ceremony begins.

Music makes the day Music and prayer have been part of commencement from 1851 on ward, though tastes in performers and selectio ns have changed. Scott's Brass Band punctuated the earliest ceremonies with musical interludes, and performers have changed regularly through the years. However, from the early 1920s when the Eastman School was established, com mencements have usually featured Eastman musical talent. The Eastman Wind Ensemble, performing under the direction of Donald Hunsberger, h as appeared regularly at recent commencements.

Words to live by Commencement speakers have been inspiring Rochester graduates ever since Henry Ward Beecher gave a speech on "Character" at the 1851 ceremonies: Theodo re Roosevelt, then governor of , spoke in 1900; New York Governor Mario Cuomo spoke in 1985, and an oth er holder of the governor's seat, Thomas E. Dewey, spoke in 1957. Richard Nixon gave advice to 1966's graduates, and Prime Minister Winston C hurchill, accepting an honorary doctorate by trans-Atla ntic radio during 1941's commencement, pleaded for Anglo-American unity in a characteristically rousing speech.

Happy at heart on this day Perhaps the single feature that best links today's ceremo nies to 1851's commencement is the audience. From 1851 onward, enthusiastic crowds h ave turned out to cheer o n Rochester graduates. Newspapers say thousands of spectators witnessed the first commencement, as Scott's Brass Band led a parade toward Corinthian H all. Following the band, "presumably in ascending order of dignity," Arthur May notes, were th e University janitor, Rochester schoolchildren, undergraduates, teachers at the commo n schools, Board of Education representatives, the mayor and his top lieutenants, officials of state and county governments, University founders, courtroom judges, the 10 graduating seniors, professors, trustees, the chancellor, and the high sheriff of Mo nroe County. Among today's thousands of spectators, many arc as distinguished and, no doubt, burst ing with as much pride as the onlookers of 1851. 4 Commencement Ceremonies Dennis O'Brien, President, PRESIDING

Honorary Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Doctor of Laws Degree Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-N.Y., is described variously as a free spirit and the intellectual-laureate of the Senate. Chairman of the and Award powerful Senate Finance Committee, Moynihan has been a senator for 17 years. Though tough to peg politically (he has been characterized as Recipients a Kennedy Democrat, a neo-conservative, a neo-liberal, and a classic Northeastern liberal), Moynihan has earned a reputation as an out spoken visionary who insists that ideas, not just interests, matter. Those ideas met the printed page in 10 books, six of them written during his tenure in the Senate, including Came the Revolution: Argument in the Reagan Era and On the Law of Nations. Raised in Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan, Moynihan attended City College of New York and graduated from Tufts University in 1948. At Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, he earned a master's degree in 1949 and a Ph.D. in 1961. He held various government posts in the 1950s and 1960s, including Assistant Secretary of Labor. During the 1960s and 1970s, Moynihan taught education, urban politics, and gov ernment at Harvard University. He also was a counselor to presidents, United Nations representative, and ambassador to India. Moynihan abandoned aspirations to become a diplomat when he won a seat in the Senate in 1977.

John Ashbery, Doctor of Humane Letters Poet and playwright Ashbery was born in Rochester and raised on a farm in nearby Sodus. Recognized as one of this country's most versatile and prolific poets, he is the only one to win all three major annual liter ary prizes in one year, 1976, when his collection Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the National Book Award. Among his other notable works are Some Trees, The Double Dream of Spring, and As We Know. One of the New York School of poets, Ashbery likens the complex forms of his poetry to stream-of-consciousness thinking. Writing is an attempt, he says, "to find out what I know." Ashbery is Charles P. Stevenson professor of languages and literature at Bard College. He has received many awards and grants, among them a prestigious MacArthur Foundation grant for 1985-90. Coincidentally, Ashbery's maternal grandfather, Henry Lawrence, to whom he was close, served as chair of the University's physics depart ment from 1903 to 1934. Ashbery says it was in his grandfather's library that he discovered literature. 42

Honorary Degree Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari, and Award Recipients Doctor of Laws Farooq Leghari, father of graduating senior Awais Leghari, was elected president of Pakistan last year. His election augurs well for the nation's ongoing stability, political analysts say. Chief of the powerful Baloch Leghari tribe, Leghari is described in press accounts as "perhaps the most distinguished politician ever elected to the post of president." He served in the civil service during the 1960s before becoming sardar, or tribal chieftain, in 1973 when his father died. After joining the People's Party of Pakistan (he remains a party leader), Leghari was elected senator in 1975 and served briefly as Z. A. Bhutto's production minister. Elected to the National Assembly several times, he was minister of water and power as well as foreign minister before running for president. Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto said Leghari's victory in the presiden tial race "has not just restored the people's faith in our legislators; it will also prove to be a turning point in the struggle to give the country a stable parliamentary system." Leghari received a B.A. at Christian College of Lahore and B.A. and master's degrees in economics at Oxford University.

Barbara Ann Teer, Doctor of Laws Not many artists are credited for revitalizing whole city blocks. For that reason, Barbara Ann Teer is an exception. Teer is chief executive officer of the National Black Theatre Inc., which she founded in Harlem in 1968. She is considered a model of multicul turalism in education and the arts and an innovator in financial devel opment. The theater today is the $10 million National Black Institute of Communication Through Theatre Arts, a steel and glass structure com plemented on the interior with works by Nigerian artists. It is the first revenue-generating black arts theater complex in the country. Teer and her company have toured parts of the world documenting and articulating, through theatrical performance, the rituals and tradi tions of Africans of the Diaspora. Born in East St. Louis, Teer received a degree in dance education with highest honors from the University of Illinois. She studied in Europe before launching a successful Broadway career under chore ographer Agnes DeMille. She also has produced, directed, and written numerous productions. Teer has received dozens of awards for her artistic and business en deavors and is praised for extending her vision of black identity to em brace other communities and traditions. 43

The Curtis Teaching Award Martin Feinberg has the uncommon gift of presenting complex ideas in a simple, straightforward manner that invites discussion. That's no small feat in the world of chemical engineering. A Rochester professor for 25 years, Feinberg is this year's recipient of the Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Students say Feinberg's material is clear and organized, and delivered with a dose of good humor. One former student recalls the intimidation students felt the day Feinberg brought the author of their text to class - until the two of them started a lighthearted discussion/comedy routine on how to measure a building's height usi ng, of all things, a barometer. Under Feinberg, one colleague says, "students realize both the beauty and relevance of their basic science background for engineering applications." Outside of class, students enjoy an easy rapport with him, often stopping in for a chat. Sometimes they seek more serious help. One former student recalls how she was able to afford her final two years at Rochester and avoid a transfer only after Feinberg secured added financial aid for her through the College of Engineering. Notes one student: "He wants to know each student as an individual, a very important step in ensuring a student's success in the classroom." Feinberg earned an M.S. in chemical engineering at and a Ph.D. at . He was named a Camille & Henry Dreyfus Scholar in 1973, received the University's Mentor Award in 1984, and was an S. C. Johnson lecturer in 1991. The Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching was established by Edward Peck Curtis, Sr., a life trustee who died in 1987. It has been awarded annually since 1962.

University Graduate Teaching Award Ronald Jones is proof that international renown and classroom teaching do mix. Jones, who is Xerox Pro fessor of Economics, is this year's recipient of the University Award for Graduate Teaching. On the Rochester faculty since 1958, Jones believes all of our equations and diagrams are of little relevance if we are unable to ex plain what they mean to non-economists. Praised by students for the clarity of his lectures, he also is an impartial mentor who finds time for both the star performers and the average students. "Kind" is a word used often to describe him. Jones takes the time to advise a substantial number of student dissertation projects. In many cases, he supplies a kind of apprentice ship in economic theory and exposition, giving students the chance to look over the shoulder of one of the world's leading economic theorists and most elegant expositors. A prolific writer, Jones is regarded globally as an expert in international trade. He is known in Japan as one of the principal architects of "the Rochester school" of economic thought. He is a fellow of the elite Econo metric Society and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Jones also received an ho no rary doctorate at the University of Geneva, known for its outstanding international economics program. M any of his former students enjoy highly successful careers in business and education. Writes one: "The scholarly contributions of Ron himself and of his many distinguished students have had a profound effect on the development of trade theory." The University Award for Graduate Teaching was established in 1987 to recognize faculty members who have excelled in graduate instruction, especially doctoral programs. The award complements the longstanding Edward Peck Curtis Award for undergraduate teaching. 44

Honorary Degree Hutchison Medal and Award The Hutchison Medal, first awarded in 1977, is th e highest honor the Recipients University gives its alumni; it recognizes outstanding achievements and notable service to community, state, or nation. Walter Cooper, this year's Hutchison medalist, is known for his tireless efforts in a wide variety of educational and community endeavors. After earning a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University in 1956, Cooper went to work for Eastman Kodak Co. as a research chemist, retiring 30 years later as manager of the Office of Technical Communications. Cooper has started and supported a staggering number of programs in education, culture, science, politics, and economics. Through local programs, for example, he works to improve the opportunities of minor ity students in secondary schools and colleges. He was appointed to the N ew York State Board of Regents in 1988 and was a founding member and vice president of the Rochester Urban League. He also supports ventures to improve agricultural enterprises in poor communities around the world. For his efforts to strengthen medical services and sanitation in Bamako, Mali, he received the Chevalier of the National Order of the Republic of Mali in 1982. Among the many other awards Cooper h as received are the Chamber of Commerce Community Development Award and its International Re lations Award and the Charles T. Lunsford Award of the Rochester U r ban League.

James William Johnson, Orator Those who receive honorary degrees at commencement are people whose accomplishments have truly made a difference in the world. The University's orator expresses that impact in a prose citation, which he reads when presenting the candidates to the presiden t. ]. W. Johnson, professor of English at the University, is the orator. A s. a professor in the College of Arts and Science, he teaches 18th-century British literature, modern d rama, and film. He has written eight books. 45

The Ensemble members are Eastman School of M usic students, many Eastman of whom are graduating at this Commencement. From its formation in 1952 by Frederick Fennell, the Eastman Wind Ensemble took an ap Wind proach decidedly different from that of the traditional wind band. The Ensemble h as since become a model for others of its kind around Ensemble the world, and has been credited with spurring a renaissance in sym phonic wind music. Donald Hunsberger, professor of conducting and ensembles, has directed the group since 1965. Six major tours have reinforced the Ensemble's reputation. During the summers of 1990 and 1992, they made extensive tours of Japan, playing before a combined total of more than 40,000 people. The group routinely performed as many as five encores before enthusiastic, sell-out crowds in Japanese concert h alls. The musicians are about to embark on their 1994 Japan Tour. The Ensemble's more than 50 recordings have set the performance standard for wind ensembles. "Carnaval;' a 1987 release of turn-of-the century cornet solos with Wynton Marsalis, was nominated for a Grammy Award and reached #1 on Billboard's Compact Disc C hart. The most re cent release is "Live At O saka;' a Sony C lassical CD recorded during the 1990 Japan Tour.

The Hopeman Memorial Carillon, named for Arendt Willem Hope The man, a prominent Rochester builder, consists of 50 bronze bells cast by Eijsbouts of The Netherlands. In addition to its frequent use as a per Carillon formance instrument, the Hopeman Carillon has been an education al resource: students of the acoustics and physics of music have studied its and reverberations, Eastman faculty and student composers have written for it, and students and alumni study carillon technique on it. Alan Rakov, U niversity Carillonneur, is a graduate student in violin at Carillonneur the Eastman School of Music and earned his undergraduate degree at Stanford. Among his carillon teachers h ave been Karel Keldermans, Jacques Lannoy, and Todd Fair. As carillonneur, Mr. Rakov performs weekly concerts, plays for special University ceremonies, and coordinates the Summer Recital Series. 46
