J.112 Indian Anthrop. Soc. 53:112-131(2018)JYOTHI JAYAPRAKASH Myths and Motives: Kodagu and the Story of the Kaveri Purana JYOTHI JAYAPRAKASH S203, Tapovan Enclaves, J.P. Nagar, Mysore, Karnataka- 570008 Abstract: This paper examines how specific myths are manipulated as ‘histories’ in order to assert supremacy, establish a hierarchy, and exercise power and control over people and resources. With specific references to the district of Kodagu in Karnataka, and the lesser known fact that Kodagu has recently raised a demand for a separate statehood, this paper takes a critical approach to the Kaveri Purana in particular, which is upheld as an undisputable theory of origin of the Kodavas. The paper examines the concept of ‘myth-making’, wherein the myth is repeatedly employed in the everyday life of the people of Kodagu to highlight assumptions of ‘greatness’ and ‘uniqueness’ that are attributed to their ‘history’, through a constant reiteration of the ‘Kshatriya’ motif. Through an analysis of the dramatized version of the myth presented by Kodagu’s first poet and playwright, Haradas Appacha (1866-1944) and through specific examples of the manifestation of the Kaveri Purana in Kodagu’s social and cultural life, this paper aims to interrogate how myths are manipulated in order to assert an authentic legitimacy by a concerted obliteration of the fine, yet definite line between myth and history. This paper argues that myths usually have an underlying motive of aspiration to power and also validations of political identity. The Kaveri myth has entered the public domain vis-à-vis statues of Kaveri as well as of Haradas Appacha.

  • Tunga Pushkara
Date 15-Nov-2020 Tunga Pushkara Te wholesome well-being of humanity can be secured by following the Dharmic practices that are ordained by the Vedas. In the Puranas, Bhagavan Veda Vyasa has instructed various ways of following such Dharmic practices. Amongst them, bathing in sacred rivers, mantra-japa, darshan of holy places & engaging in charitable activities in such places are foremost. While even a dip in a sacred river on any day is considered meritorious, the benefts obtained are manifold when a ritualistic bath in the sacred river is undertaken during auspicious occasions such as Mahashivaratri, Ratha Saptami, Sankramana, Grahana, holy months like Kartika, Magha, etc. Presently, the Tunga Bhadra Pushkara festival is about to commence when the Brihaspati Graha transits into the Makara Rashi. Undertaking the ritualistic bath in the sacred river during the frst twelve days of this auspicious Pushkara vouchsafes great well-being. Greatness of Tunga Bhadra In the Krita Yuga, Lord Vishnu, the Protector of the worlds, undertook the Varaha Avatara in order to to annihilate the evil Hiranyaksha. After putting an end to him, the Lord in His divine form as the Varaha (boar) rested in the Sahyadri mountains (Western ghats). It was then that the Tungabhadra river originated from the Lord’s tusk. Just as the river Ganga that originates from the holy Feet of Lord Vishnu is very sacred, the Tungabhadra river that originated from the Lord’s tusk is also greatly revered. Because of its origination from Lord Yajna Varaha, the scriptures state that the Tunga river is ever sanctifed by the divine presence of Lord Vishnu.
