Frustration at being erased from dominant media narratives, as if one’s superpower were invisibility. Anger at being treated like the butt of a joke, every laugh track another dart in a board already creaking under the weight of all the prejudice hurled against you. It is hard to describe how utterly exhausting it is to see oneself find tragic ending after tragic ending after tragic ending onscreen. Slowly, with time, the possibility of one’s happiness becomes a distant afterthought. Because these representations chip away at you bit by bit, eroding your sense of self, making you question whether or not you actually deserve a happy ending. Sadness because none of this seems to be changing – ohnmacht in the face of the fact that none of this seems changeable.
