The Wrecking Crew—Whether You Knew It Or Not
HISTORY JUNE 2012 Kent Hartman “You are in for a big surprise!” —Dusty street The Inside StoryWrecking of Rock and Roll’s Best-Kept Crew Secret Part Hit Men and part Laurel Canyon, this hidden history of rock and roll chronicles the uncredited studio musi- cians who provided the soundtrack for a generation dur- ing the 1960s and 1970s. On hit record after hit record by everyone from the Byrds, the Beach Boys, and the Monkees to the Grass Roots, the 5th Dimension, Sonny & Cher, and Simon & Garfunkel, this collection of West Coast studio musicians from diverse backgrounds established themselves as the driving sound of pop music—sometimes over the objection of actual band members forced to make way for Wrecking Crew members. Industry insider Kent Hartman tells the dramatic, definitive story of the musicians who forged a reputation throughout the business as the secret weapons behind the top recording stars. James Last Was, in 1975, One of the Most Popular Recording Artists
06007 5305679 ward the end. It’s easy to hear why Watts has always been Hollywood’s go-to man for romantic sax. “Summertime” is said to be one of Maestro Last’s favorite songs, and he’s often performed and recor- ded it, though more in the traditional James Last style than heard here. An edited version of “Summertime” was issued on 45 as an “A” side in Europe (Polydor POSP 45) and as a “B” side to “Love For Sale” in the United States (Polydor PD15108). I Can’t Move No Mountains – From the first Blood, Sweat & Tears album after founder David Clayton Thomas left the group, “New Blood” (1972), this song featured a jazzier sound, no doubt promp- ted by the jazz musicians in the band at the time, which lent itself well to the cover it gets here. The solos are by Larry Muhoberac on syn- thesizer and Larry Carlton on guitar. Love For Sale – Had Cole Porter lived through the disco age, he would have no doubt appreciated this take on one of the greatest tunes of temporary companionship ever written. The strings, the horns and Larry Muhoberac’s vibrant electric piano make this a classic that could have been equally at home in any blaxploitation film of the pe- riod or, more appropriately, a European dance club. While James Last has performed Cole Porter’s classic many times, it never got near as funky as this. The “Love For Sale” single went to Top 80 in the Uni- ted States. Bolero ’75 – There have been quite a few attempts to rock the clas- sics, or in James Last’s case, bring the “classics up to date”. -

Contemporary straight-grained red morocco, front and rear boards with highly elaborate decorative tooled borders with larger tooled corner pieces to surround large central astral vignette com- posed of small astral tools, banded spine in 14 compartments with elaborate decorative tooling and gilt presentation, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. A remarkable complete set of excellent impressions of the rare series of plates illustrating the life of Charles I, here in a superlative decorative presentation binding of contemporary red morocco. This series, presented from a strongly sympathetic royalist perspective, depicts 10 tableaux from the life of Charles I, be- ginning with his marriage to Henrietta Maria of France in 1625 and concluding with his execution and, pace the title of the plate, his Apotheosis. Even if the images themselves did not stress the romantic tragedy, the engraved text beneath each - in English for a domestic and French for a continental audience - provides ample detail concerning the sufferings of the mis- understood, otherworldly and much put upon Royal Martyr. Bathos (pathos!) aside, the series in nevertheless a triumph of engraving, a superb example of pictorial biography and several of the plates are superlative masterpieces of invention. -

GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds. -

US Apple LP Releases
Apple by the Numbers U.S. album releases From the collection of Andre Gardner of NY, NY SWBO‐101 The Beatles The Beatles Released: 22 Nov. 1968 (nicknamed "The White Album") In stark contrast to the cover to Sgt. Pepper's LHCB, the cover to this two record set was plain white, with writing only on the spine and in the upper right hand corner of the back cover (indicating that the album was in stereo). This was the first Beatles US album release which was not available in mono. The mono mix, available in the UK, Australia, and several other countries, sounds quite different from the stereo mix. The album title was embossed on the front cover. Inserts included a poster and four glossy pictures (one of each Beatle). The pictures were smaller in size than those issued with the UK album. A tissue paper separator was placed between the pictures and the record. Finally, as in every EMI country, the albums were numbered. In the USA, approximately 3,200,000 copies of the album were numbered. These albums were numbered at the different Capitol factories, and there are differences in the precise nature of the stamping used on the covers. Allegedly, twelve copies with east‐coast covers were made that number "A 0000001".
