Week 5 Game Notes WEEK 5 • LSU FOOTBALL GAME NOTES LSU Tigers at Georgia Oct. 2, 2004 • 2:30 p.m. CDT Athens, Ga. • Sanford Stadium (92,746) 1958 2003 THE SABAN ERA | 4 YEARS, 4 BOWLS, 2 SEC TITLES, 1 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP NATIONAL CHAMPIONS #13 LSU (3-1, 1-1 SEC) Tigers Set To Battle Georgia in Rematch of 2003 SEC Title Game LSU travels to Athens for the first time since 1999 as the 13th-ranked Tigers face third-ranked Georgia in a rematch SEPTEMBER of last year's Southeastern Conference Championship Game. Today’s contest carries a 2:30 p.m. CT start and will be 4 Oregon State (ESPN) W, 22-21 (OT) televised to a national audience by CBS. LSU enters the contest with a 3-1 overall mark and a 1-1 league record fol- 11 Arkansas State W, 53-3 lowing last week's 51-0 win over Mississippi State. Georgia, who had an open date on last Saturday, is 3-0 overall and 18 * at #14/15 Auburn (CBS) L, 10-9 1-0 in league play. Last year, LSU swept a pair of games from the Bulldogs, winning 17-10 in Baton Rouge in 25 * Mississippi State (JP) W, 51-0 September and then 34-13 in the SEC title game in December in Atlanta. LSU enters the Georgia game ranked first OCTOBER in the SEC and No. 5 in the nation in total defense, allowing 236 yards per game, while the Tigers are tops in the league and 10th in the nation in rushing defense allowing only 77.6 yards per contest. LSU has scored two defensive TDs this 2 * at Georgia (CBS) 2:30 p.m. year, and dating back to last season, the Tiger defense has scored in nine of their last 18 games. In addition, LSU has had 10 different players score offensive TDs this year, NOVEMBER led by WR Dwayne Bowe, who has 4 receiving scores and RB Alley Broussard, who has 3 rushing scores. 13 * Alabama TBA 20 * Ole Miss TBA Tigers Score Early And Often In 51-0 Rout Of Mississippi State 26 * at Arkansas (at Little Rock) (CBS) 1:30 p.m. Alley Broussard scored a career-best 3 TDs, all in the first 17 minutes of the game, as the Tigers racked up 599 yards DECEMBER of offense in rolling to a 51-0 win over Mississippi State in Tiger Stadium. LSU set the tone early in the contest going 4 SEC Championship (CBS) 5 p.m. 74 yards on 7 plays, five of which were runs, for a 7-0 lead just three minutes into the game. Following a MSU fumble on its first possession, the Tigers need only 6 plays to go 18 yards for a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. From there, the route was on as the Tigers built a 27-0 lead early in the second quarter following a 35-yard intercep- tion return for a TD by Marcus Spears. LSU led 34-0 at halftime. In the second half, the Tigers stretched the margin #3 Georgia (3-0, 1-0 SEC) to 41-0 on an 8-yard run by QB JaMarcus Russell and then 48-0 on a 67-yard TD reception by Xavier Carter. For the contest, LSU picked up 31 first downs, while limiting MSU to just 7. LSU also held MSU to only 130 yards of SEPTEMBER offense, while intercepting a season-high 4 passes. The 51-point margin of victory was the biggest by LSU in an SEC 4 Georgia Southern (FSN) W, 48-28 game since a 61-6 win over Mississippi State in 1969.
