Background for Teachers Teacher must have a knowledge of maps and map keys. Teacher must know how to use iPad and the iMovie app to film the classroom and features around the students. The project could be extended to make maps of the school or even head outside and make a map of the playground.

Student Prior Knowledge Students will have had lessons about the purposes and features of maps. They will have read books and been exposed to many kinds of maps. They will understand what a symbol is on a map. The book "me on the Map' will help students understand that maps are made partly so we can find our place on them. We can locate our community and place in the world.

Intended Learning Outcomes Students will understand that they can make a map of any place. They can study the features around them and create symbols for a map. Students will be able to determine which symbols are appropriate for each feature. Students will be able to create and draw their own map of the classroom.

Instructional Procedures Teacher and students will film the room and determine which features in the classroom are significant and should be on a map. The students and teacher will watch the movie created and stop at each feature to discuss what its symbol should look like and where it should be located on a map. There will be a whole-group map drawn on the SmartBoard as an example. Students will create a map key for the map and symbols. Each student will use the whole-group map to create their own individual map of the classroom.

Strategies for Diverse Learners The discussion and visuals associated with the classroom will aid my ELLs. The whole-group map will scaffold what a map should look like. Each student then has the chance to create their own map.

Extensions Make maps of bigger spaces such as the school, playground or even neighborhood.

Assessment Plan The assessment portion of this lesson really has very little to do with the use of iMovie. I am interested in the student's final project which is a map of the classroom or school. Their participation in the making and viewing of the class movie is all that is required on that part of the project.
