16 EXHIBITION: High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese - Nicola Harwood, Fred Wah, Bessie Wapp, Thomas Loh, Jin Zhang, Hiromoto Ida, Tomoyo Ihaya, Phillip Djwa and Patrice Leung

Opening: July 4 from 6-9pm for ArtWalk Artist Talk: July 5 at 1pm Exhibition: July 5 - July 19, 2014 Gallery hours: Wednesday to Saturday from 1-5pm An artist and community collaboration, High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese, is an interactive exhibition that explores some of the experiences of Chinese Canadians immigrating to Canada and to Nelson. The exhibition opens July 4th at 6pm.

The exhibition was created by a team of Nelson and Vancouver artists including Nicola Harwood, former director of Oxygen Art Centre, Fred Wah, former Poet Laureate of Canada, artist / performers Bessie Wapp and Thomas Loh and composer Jin Zhang. Significant artistic contributions also came from Nelson performer, Hiromoto Ida, visual artist, Tomoyo Ihaya and electronic artist Phillip Djwa. As well, many community members contributed oral histories and stories, including Cameron Mah and Lawrence Mar, both of Nelson.

Visitors are invited to participate in the gamble of immigration by filling in their own family immigration histories and playing the Pak Ah Pu lottery. The materials created by the artists, including poems, images, music, video and interviews are triggered by audience interaction with the lottery – taking each person to their own destination and leaving them with a “fortune.”

The project is also an interactive website where all the materials of the exhibition can be experienced on-line.

High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese, will be on exhibition at Oxygen Art Centre, July 5 - July 19, Wednesday to Saturday from 1-5pm. Artist talks will take place Saturday July 5th at 1pm and all are invited to attend.

Towards exhibitions and events on the topic of preservation and new media art practices this Fall, InterAccess is calling for cases of artworks that are on the verge of technological obsolescence.

Works in a tenuous stage in their lives—from requiring replacement parts no longer being manufactured, becoming incompatible with their operating platforms, or just collecting dust because there is no clear or straightforward path for its continuation in life —are being solicited for public discussion on an online platform and for the opportunity to be exhibited in-gallery at InterAccess.

Specifically, we are seeking artworks that are currently in the process of becoming obsolete, and where the decision to upgrade may fundamentally change the workʼs meaning or threaten its artistic integrity.

The Internet has permanently altered not only the means in which we communicate, but also how we associate and place ourselves in the world. As society becomes more conditioned to read symbols, glyphs, and photos in lieu of words, it naturally follows that there is a strong exchange of "viral" images online that creates its own type of subculture. Imgur, reddit and 4chan are all examples of these image forums, and forums is an experiment to see what happens when we eject these images from their digital environments and back into the physical realm.

63 MENTORSHIP: NEW MEDIA MENTORSHIP AND EXHIBITION: Vtape CALL FOR PROPOSALS

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: FRIDAY JULY 18, 2014, 4:00PM

Vtapeʼs award-winning Curatorial Incubator™ returns, inviting applications from emerging curators.

This year, The Curatorial Incubator, v.12 – A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Brat seeks proposals for programs of work that put a contemporary spin on the modernist classic (pace Papa Joyce). Coming of age causes problems, within the highly personal environment of the family as well as in the overtly political milieu of the state. This yearʼs Curatorial Incubator will delve into this rich atmosphere of change and surface with programs to delight and confound.

Participants in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Brat will have an opportunity to hone their curatorial skills in the media arts in a number of important ways: attending specialized workshops conducted by arts professionals; conducting independent research using the rich resources available through Vtape; writing a curatorial essay for their program of selected titles, with invaluable editorial assistance provided by an arts professional; and, finally, presenting their curated program to the public.

Research phase (August-September) includes: • workshops conducted by established curators, artists and arts professionals specializing in media arts, • free access to the vast research facilities on site at Vtape, with almost 4000 titles by 800+ artists and over 2500 articles on video art, and • extensive access to the Vtape on-line preview resource available only to curators and authorized researchers.

Presentation phase (January – February 2015) includes: • an exhibition of all the curated programs with an introduction by the curator, and • a fully illustrated catalogue of all the programs with curatorial essays.

Proposals must include: • an up-to-date c.v.; • a statement of intention (1 page in total) that outlines your interest in video and media artwork and why you want to be part of The Curatorial Incubator, v.12 – A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Brat • examples of critical writing your have done (published or non-published) • examples of any curatorial or organizational work you have done

OTHER REQUIRED INFORMATION TO ACCOMPANY PROPOSALS • indicate your availability for workshops August 6 (evening) and/or August 9-10, 2014, (days) • NOTE: If you are from outside of Toronto, please indicate how you would cover the costs of your travel to the workshops (to be held over 1 weekend) and some additional time for on-site research at Vtape.

And donʼt worry; you wonʼt be held to your original proposal but keep in mind that the jury will need to get an idea of what kind of work you are going to be searching for. Surprises are to be expected along the way. Thatʼs what research is all about.

Description The OAAG Cultural Diversity and Leadership Project offers support for six new mentoring opportunities for culturally diverse arts professionals who see their career paths set to Director/CEO-level leadership positions in the Ontario public art gallery sector. The mentoring program has been designed through a consultative process with special funding from the Toronto Arts Council and major funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario.

The call for applications from mentorees is open to Ontario arts professionals who have worked in or are working in public art galleries, who self-identify as culturally diverse, including Aboriginal peoples and visible minorities, and who see themselves in gallery leadership roles at the Director/CEO levels. The call for applications from mentors is open to senior arts professionals who are have worked in or are working in public art galleries at the Director/CEO-level and who seek to explore acceleration of cultural diversity in leadership roles. • The program can match up to six culturally diverse arts professionals with senior arts leaders in public art galleries across Ontario. • Mentorees are invited to identify mentors and to design their own mentoring relationships, which could consist of regular meetings and activities with senior arts leaders, to focus on building skills and knowledge on cultural diversity and leadership in the public art gallery sector. • An assessment committee will review all applications. • This is a responsive mentorship program that offers an opportunity for a mutually beneficial relationship between the mentor and mentoree in order to develop skills and exchange information. • We are actively seeking applications from across the province. • Mentorees and mentors will have access to support from professional consultants in human resources, cultural diversity and change management.

Through the program, OAAG is inviting culturally diverse arts professionals to create their own mentoring relationships with senior arts managers. The intended purpose of the mentorships, which can last 9 to 12 months, is to accelerate career transition into positions of leadership.

The mentorship program is expected to benefit individuals, organizations and the public art gallery sector in Ontario, which may include improved: • Ability to integrate culturally diverse values and principles in operations, planning, audience development, marketing, programming and decision-making processes in public art galleries • Governance, leadership and change management skills, particularly related to culturally diverse engagement • Methods, techniques and practices in managing a public art gallery, including partnership development, human resource management and financial administration • Relations and communications with Board of Directors and/or city council • Strategic planning, especially in the context of cultural pluralism/diversity • Listening skills and ability to give feedback • Self-reflection and other personal skills • Networking and contacts • Other areas as identified by mentorees or mentors

Mentoring teams will be able to access OAAG support and training including: • Opening and closing workshops that will bring all mentorees and mentors together for training, discussions, and networking • Training materials • Access to the OAAG Secretariat, an Executive Coaching/Human Resource Consultant and a Cultural Pluralism Consultant • Significant networking opportunities

Background OAAG identified significant gaps in cultural diversity at executive leadership levels in the Ontario public art gallery sector. The DiverseCity Counts Report found significant diversity gaps at levels of executive leadership across many sectors in Ontario, including public art galleries. OAAGʼs standing committee on membership and programs identified mentorship as a priority and desired professional development strategy, responding to leadership priorities raised by art gallery colleagues at both the provincial and federal levels. This mentorship program is part of the OAAG Cultural Diversity and Leadership Project, which provides diversity training to strengthen governance, leadership and change management. Other aspects of the project include workshops and a resource website, which are accessible to all galleries across the province.

OAAG gratefully acknowledges the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Toronto Arts Council.

About the Ontario Association of Art Galleries The vision statement of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries is to be a vital and effective advocate for Ontario's dynamic public art galleries, serving and representing our members across the province as valued and essential centres of art and learning. OAAG's membership consists of over 200 art museums, public art galleries, artist-run centres, visual arts organizations, and professional colleagues across Ontario. OAAG is a registered charitable organization.

Submissions are adjudicated twice a year. Applications should be postmarked by September 15th. For full details: www.akimbo.ca/65265. 70 PUBLIC ART: PAN AM GAMES | Call for Entry: Site Specific Sculpture Project Deadline: JUL 15 The Robert McLaughlin Gallery (RMG), in collaboration with the City of Oshawa, will commission a site-specific sculpture by a Canadian artist in celebration of the Cityʼs participation in the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

“The RMG is a key partner in the Cityʼs new Culture Counts: Oshawaʼs Arts, Culture and Heritage Plan,” said Gabrielle Peacock, Chief Executive Officer of the RMG. “Encouraging the communityʼs interaction with art outside of our four walls is a priority for the gallery and for Oshawa. The RMG and the City partnered in 2012 to site Clement Meadmoreʼs sculpture Upstart II outside City Hall. We are thrilled to bring art to the downtown core through a commission with a national scope.”

The sculpture will be installed in the spring of 2015, adjacent to the General Motors Centre (GM Centre), Durham Regionʼs premier sports and recreation facility, and the venue of the boxing and weightlifting events at next yearʼs TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games.

“The RMG and GM Centre are both significant attractions in downtown Oshawa and the City is pleased and excited to partner with the RMG to provide this opportunity to display what Iʼm sure will be an amazing sculpture in our downtown,” said Councillor Bob Chapman, Chair of the Community Services Committee. “The RMG is an important part of Oshawaʼs Arts, Culture and Heritage Plan and the sharing of Canadian art with our residents and visitors is just a small piece of the role they play.”

In this two-stage competition, interested artists or artistsʼ teams will submit an Expression of Interest, consisting of a resume, artistʼs statement as well as detailed relevant work and experience. A Selection Committee will choose approximately five candidates who will receive a $1,500 honorarium for the production of a project proposal. The final commission consists of a $150,000 production budget, which includes all fees, materials, fabrication and installation costs. The cost of the commission will be provided through the galleryʼs restricted Acquisitions Endowment.

The commission will be awarded by November 1, 2014 with installation set to take place by May 15, 2015.

The deadline for entries is July 15, 2014 and full details can be found at www.rmg.on. ca. All questions and submissions should be directed to Linda Jansma, the RMGʼs Senior Curator at [email protected] or 905-576-3000, ext. 111.

In addition to celebrating the Cityʼs participation in the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games, the project will reflect narratives that have meaning to the community and the public space that the work will occupy. 71 PUBLIC ART: Call to Artists for Expression of Interest (EOI) for Permanent Public Art Work, The Robert McLaughlin Gallery Submission Deadline: Tuesday, 15 July, 2014

In celebration of the City of Oshawaʼs participation in the TORONTO 2015 PanAm/ Parapan Am Games, The Robert McLaughlin Gallery (RMG) is commissioning a site- specific sculpture by a Canadian artist, to be placed adjacent to Oshawaʼs General Motors Centre (GM Centre) in the spring of 2015. The purpose of this project, along with celebrating the cityʼs participation in the 2015 games, is to reflect significant narratives, and have meaning to the community and the public space, which the work will occupy. The work should also respond to the RMGʼs statement of purpose: The Robert McLaughlin Gallery is dedicated to sharing, exploring and engaging with our communities through the continuing story of modern and contemporary Canadian art. This project is the fourth sculpture commissioned by the RMG and will be part of a permanent collection of over 4500 works with an emphasis on mid-century modern and contemporary Canadian art.

Historically, the site was occupied by the Mississauga of the Ojibway nation who travelled through forests and along the shores of Lake Ontario. The French established a trading post at the mouth of the Oshawa Creek around 1750, beginning the economic history of the region, which included the production of the automobile that was begun in 1907 by the McLaughlin family. The City of Oshawa was established as a village in 1850 and in 1924 was elevated from the status of a town to that of a city. The city has a population of 157,000 and is home to three post-secondary institutions, including Ontarioʼs newest university—founded in 2002—the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). The sculpture site is adjacent to the GM Centre, the cityʼs premier sports and entertainment facility. The centre is part of a revitalized downtown core that includes various faculties of UOIT and 5500 of its students in its downtown campus.

This is a two-stage competition. The production budget is $150,000 (includes HST). This amount includes all fees, materials, fabrication and installation costs. A Selection Committee will select approximately five proposals in August, 2014. Please note that artists are NOT asked to submit proposals at this stage of the competition. At this stage artists are requested to submit: • Resume (in print form, max. 4 pages). Please include postal mailing address, telephone number and email address • 6-8 digital images of recent, relevant work* • Artist statement outlining both interest in the proposal and experience working with both engineers and fabricators

*Artists should submit digital images listing title, date, materials and dimensions for each work. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of submission of material if desired.

Shortlisted artists or artistsʼ teams will receive a $1,500 honorarium for the production of a project proposal based on a Terms of Reference document provided to the short-listed artists by the RMG.

The Selection Committee will finalize its decision by 1 November, 2014; the commissioned sculpture is to be installed by 15 May, 2015.

Please direct questions and submissions to Linda Jansma, Senior Curator, at [email protected] or 905.576.3000 ext 111.

75 RESIDENCY: OCAD University Digital Painting Atelier Call for Submissions

“The Digital Painting Atelier has been a terrific opportunity for artists to experiment with the various expanding practices that connect with the mediums of drawing and painting. Over the past few years it has been a distinct pleasure to have artists engage with the OCAD U community and grapple with contemporary issues related to the hand made and the digital.” Luke Painter. Chair, Contemporary Painting and Print Media

Artists are invited to submit proposals to the Digital Painting Atelier. Artists are selected through a jury process. This opportunity provides an artist with one-week access to technology and technical support offered through the Digital Drawing and Painting Lab for creative experimentation and expansion of their practice. The artist will produce a new and original edition of artwork/digital prints and interact with the community of the Drawing and Painting program. The artwork produced during the residency will benefit both the visiting artist and the Drawing and Painting program. The artist maintains majority ownership through a 60/40 split of a minimum edition of 5 prints. The Faculty of Art will exhibit, auction and archive the remaining 40% of the edition. This will in turn offset the cost of running the Digital Painting Atelier and help raise funds for other initiatives in the Faculty of Art.

OCAD University students will have an opportunity to interact with the artist in residence as well as assist in the development of artistʼs project. The visiting artist will be expected to lecture on their work, conduct informal presentations, critiques and/or workshops to students and faculty. Moreover, the artist will be entitled to an honorarium, travel expenses and accommodations during the residency. Please see the application form for more details.
