KCACTF 2013 - 5 Paul Stuart Graham, General Manager Los Angeles Theatre Center Welcome Region VIII Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival to the Los Angeles Theatre Center. We are pleased to be your host for Festival 45 and hope you find time to explore the many facets of our burgeoning and diverse downtown Los Angeles community. Back in my halcyon days as a theatre student at the University of Massachusetts we WELCOME entered the American College Theatre Festival with a production of Moonchildren by Michael Weller. We were not selected to compete at festival; however, my friend Michael was selected to participate in the Irene Ryan competition. I remember this vividly, as this was my first exposure to competition in the arts. I was happy for my fellow actor, albeit I thought my performance was also worthy of recognition. Weeks later, after much deliberation, I decided to rise above the festival judges’ oversight and applauded loudly for my friend at the conference. He didn’t win the award, but it was a wonderful experience to witness all the talent on the stage. As we left the conference commiserating over “our” loss, I realized that this life in the theatre was not going to be an easy choice—ACTF truly had opened my eyes to the competition and to what it would take to have a professional career in the theatre. Twenty five years later I am still a part of our theatre community and I cherish every moment. During the past fourteen years I have served as a professor/ administrator at two CSU universities, Cal State Long Beach and Cal State LA, where currently I am on the faculty in the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance. I have had the opportunity to work with many talented, creative, and insightful administrators, faculty and students. I know that the late Roger Stevens— the Kennedy Center’s founding chairman who started the nationwide festival back in 1969 to serve as a catalyst for improving the quality of college and university theatre in the United States—would be most proud of its accomplishment. I had the pleasure of co-producing a new musical with Mr. Stevens, and we owe a great deal to him for having the vision to have created this vital and compelling theatre festival. Congratulations to all of those involved in celebrating Festival 45! On behalf of the staff and crew of the LATC, we hope you have an outstanding festival and that you will return to the Center soon. We present our EAST OF BROADWAY Season, beginning in March, and we invite you to review the upcoming season by visiting our website at www.thelatc.org. KCACTF 2013 - 6 Jose Luis Valenzuela, Artistic Director Latino Theater Company—Los Angeles Theatre Center It is with great joy that we welcome the Region VIII Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival to the Los Angeles Theatre Center and the great city of Los Angeles. We invite you to explore the cultural diversity, striking beauty, and artistic energy of this city that the Latino Theater Company calls home. This year marks our eighth year at the helm of the Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC), a world-class arts center with four unique stages and over 100 years of history in downtown Los Angeles. As the managing entity of the Los Angeles Theatre Center, The Latino Theater Company is committed to maintaining the Center as a space where diverse peoples, cultures and ideas converge within and through performance. As a professor of Theater and Directing at UCLA, I am personally committed to advancing college/university theater programs to develop the next generation of socially conscious, aesthetically diverse and boundary pushing artists that will continue to revitalize the field. During economic hardships, such as the one we are experiencing now, the arts are often overlooked or seen as a dispensable luxury. It is during these difficult times that supporting the arts is most critical. Art can inspire, enlighten and feed the soul, it is what sets us apart from the rest of nature - it is what makes us human. The Los Angeles Theatre Center produces and presents theater, music, dance and spoken word that represents various communities and we open our arms to all who want to take part in a global vision of mutual respect and understanding. Latina/o, Black, White, Asian, Native American, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, LGBT… – we all have a home at the LATC. Today we open our arms to KCACTF and say bienvenidos/welcome to the students, faculty members, technicians, actors, directors, designers, stage managers, audiences, family and friends associated with this festival. The Latino Theater Company is honored to open the doors of the Los Angeles Theatre Center to such an inspiring commitment and dedication to improving the quality and diversity of college/university theater across the nation. • Ripe Frenzy Program (Download PDF)
WELCOME Greenway Arts Alliance has been honored to serve thousands of students, artists and community members for the last twenty years. Did you know that you are on the campus of Fairfax High School in a building designed and constructed by Fairfax students as a “Social Hall” in the 1940’s? Based on articles in the school newspaper, the students were committed to building a home in which to “socialize.” Greenway continues this commit- ment through our mission to unite communities through our productions at the Greenway Court Theatre, which give our patrons the opportunity to share in the communal experience of live theatre. Jennifer Barclay's Ripe Frenzy, produced through the National New Play Network's Rolling World Premiere program, is the culminating production of Greenway's 20th Anniversary season. In it we showcase our recommitment to producing important new works that explore the pressing social issues of our time. As we write this letter in preparation for Opening Night, we do so with the knowledge that students, teachers and parents in Santa Fe, Texas, are mourning their friends and children lost in yet another school shooting. Since Columbine, we have watched in horror as 85 similar shootings have occurred, killing 223 people. As a theatre in residence on a high school campus, we say ENOUGH, and hope that this produc- tion will inspire our audiences to interrogate society's role in the proliferation of these events, and look for ways to work toward ending them. We regard Greenway Court Theatre as our home and are grateful that you are here.

  • Transnational Feminist Theatre of Velina Hasu Houston Mariko HORI
ISSN 1347-2720 ■ Comparative Theatre Review Vol.11 No.1 (English Issue) March 2012 Shaping a New Communal Identity: Transnational Feminist Theatre of Velina Hasu Houston Mariko HORI Abstract Velina Hasu Houston, a Los Angeles-based American writer, is often regarded as a multicultural or postmodern playwright because of the characteristics of her works written from her transnational or multiracial point of view, but she posits herself as a feminist writer, resisting the labels such as “multicultural artist” or “postmodernist” that may force every “ethnic theater” into “an artistic ghetto.” She creates works revealing struggles and frustrations of transnational, multicultural and multiracial women in the white male-centered society, dreaming of a new world community where they are treated equally and with respect. Houston challenges to accepted practices by exploring theatrical innovations in her pursuit of an identity that dissolves any border. In her most successful play, Tea, her her- oine, a ghost, who, having killed her husband and lost her daughter, committed suicide, crosses the border between this world and that world, listening to the interactions of four other Japanese women who are visiting her house. Scenes go back and forth; in some scenes five women enact the roles of their husbands and daughters. Such use of scenes defies chronological order; the use of geographically unfixed sets and multiple roles played by a single performer are features often seen in contemporary feminist theatre. She often re-envisions the gender relations of ancient myth and creates a new myth where individuals “transgress borders of nations and identity, forming new communities that often defy categorization.” Mina in The House of Chaos, based on the Medea myth, is a Japanese woman who defeats her husband and his male ally who conspired to drive her away to rob her of the firm she had inherited from her Japanese family.
