On page 11 of mellifluous Spanish Flu, the misnomer for the pandemic that this issue of Panorama, Lorri Ungaretti ravaged the world and San Francisco 102 years ago. A panorama is any wide-angle view or representation of a physical space, whether in painting, drawing, photography, film/video, or a three-dimensional model. Some 35mm P&S cameras would show a mask to help with composition. • Advantages • No special equipment or technique required • Best (only?) option for scenes with lots of movement • Disadvantages • Reduction in resolution since you are cutting away portions of the image • Depending on resolution may only be adequate for web or smaller prints How do I make a panorama? John zJXCaelzel, zM^aster Showman of ^Automata and Panoramas OHN NEPOMUK MAELZEL, the son of an ingenious mechanician and organ builder, was born on August 15, 1772, in Regensburg, J Bavaria. Thoroughly trained in the theory and practice of music, he became the best pianist in Regensburg at the age of fourteen. After teaching music for a few years, he moved to Vienna in 1792, where he occupied himself not only in scientific and mathematical studies, but with mechanical experiments on musical instruments, a field which had become promising after musical clocks were intro- duced in the eighteenth century.1 Maelzel invented an orchestral automaton that was composed of all the pieces of an entire military band and for which Albert, Duke of Saxe-Teschen, paid 3,000 florins in 1803. In 1806 another in- strument of the same kind, with clarinets, violins, violas and violon- cello added, was also completed by Maelzel. This instrument was enclosed in a large cabinet case and played compositions by Mozart, Haydn, Cherubini, Crescentini, and others. It was exhibited with much success locally, and was later taken to Paris where it was christened the "panharmonicon." It received tremendous popularity in Europe, and later toured America where people gladly paid one dollar to hear it perform.2 In 1808 Maelzel produced another invention — an automaton Trumpeter. Two separate discs; with vibrantly-coloured lithographic images on circular card-stock (with diameters of 23 cm.). Both discs featuring two-tier narratives; the first, with festive subject of music and drinking/dancing (with 10 images and 10 apertures), the second featuring a chap in Tam o' shanter, jumping over a ball and performing a jig (with 12 images and 12 apertures). £ 350 each (w/ modern facsimile handle available for additional £ 120) Being some of the earliest pre-cinema devices—most often attributed either to either Joseph Plateau of Belgium or the Austrian Stampfer, circa 1832—phenakistiscopes (sometimes called fantascopes) functioned as indirect media, requiring a mirror through which to view the rotating discs, with the discrete illustrations activated into a singular animation through the interruption-pattern produced by the set of punched apertures. The early discs offered here were issued from the Piccadily premises of Samuel William Fores (1761-1838)—not long after Ackermann first introduced the format into London. Abstract The New Bedford Whaling Museum (NBWM) will develop a traveling exhibition titled A Spectacle in Motion: The Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World. This exhibition features one of the longest and most distinguished paintings in the United States, the 1,275’ Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World, an authentic and arresting depiction of a 19th century whaling voyage. Painted by two New Bedford artists, the Panorama travelled the United States between the 1850s and 1870s as a moving picture show. It has not been shown in its entirety or as it was originally intended since the 1870s. The Panorama contains broad content related to history, industry, and geography, and conveys themes of globalization, cultural diversity, popular literature, and visual culture. The traveling exhibition will debut in New Bedford, MA in 2018, and then travel to Mystic, CT directly after in late 2018. The project also includes the development of digital content and educational programs. B.) Nature of the Request The New Bedford Whaling Museum (NBWM) respectfully requests a $40,000 exhibition planning grant to support the development of a traveling exhibition titled A Spectacle in Motion: The Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World. -

VISITOR ATTRACTION CASE STUDY CYCLORAMA EXHIBIT - ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER ATLANTA, GA THE VISIONARIES CHOICE DIGITAL PROJECTION BRINGS THE PAST TO LIFE AT ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER For historians, researching the past and finding ties to the present is a cherished hobby, job, and duty. This is especially important when dealing with one-of-a- kind artifacts from critical moments in history. For the proud city of Atlanta, understanding and experiencing its past is not just for tourism; it is an integral part of the city’s identity and community. So, when the Atlanta History Center sought to create an engaging, larger-than-life experience for their gigantic Cyclorama exhibit, they relied on Digital Projection to tell the story of this precious painting and lead visitors on a journey back through time. Founded in 1926 to preserve and study the history of the city, the Atlanta Historical Society has spent decades collecting, researching, and publishing informa- tion about Atlanta and the surrounding areas. What began as a small, archival-focused group of historians, has now grown into one of the largest local history museums in the country; the Atlanta History Center – hosting exhibitions on the Civil War, Civil Rights Movement, literary masterpieces from Atlanta-born authors, and Native American culture. With four historic houses, 33 acres of curated gardens, and a multitude of wide-ranging programs and displays, it is one of the must-see tourist destinations in Atlanta. One of their key exhibits is the enormous and jaw-dropping Cyclorama. A HISTORIC MOMENT ON A MASSIVE SCALE Originally created in 1886, the 49ft tall by 371ft wide panoramic painting depicts the famous Battle of Atlanta; a critical moment in the Civil War.
