The Jumbo Shrimp (21-30) took a lead in the bottom of the second inning, when Jagielo hit a one-out solo home run to the right-field bleachers off Blue Wahoos right-hander Daniel Wright (2-3). It was Jagielo’s first home run against his former club. Jacksonville third baseman Brian Schales added a fourth-inning solo home run to right field off Wright for a 2-0 lead. Neidert (5-3) struck out two batters in every inning he worked and kept Pensacola (20-31) scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when right fielder Aristides Aquion hit a leadoff home run to left field. In the sixth inning, Neidert walked the first two batters, shortstop Luis Gonzalez hit a game-tying single to right field, and Aquino hit a go-ahead single to right field. Jacksonville catcher Rodrigo Vigil threw out Aquino trying to steal second base, and Neidert struck out third baseman Taylor Sparks for the last of his 12 strikeouts. Neidert allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks. Wright began the bottom of the sixth inning by walking center fielder Monte Harrison and second baseman Isan Diaz. Right fielder John Norwood extended a nine-game hitting streak with a single to left field, loading the bases. Right-hander Robinson Leyer hit Jagielo with a pitch to tie the game. Schales then chopped a go-ahead single into center field, Vigil hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and Leyer’s wild pitch scored the final of four runs in the inning to give Jacksonville a 6-3 lead. Jacksonville left-hander Mike Kickham pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, before right-hander Marcus Crescentini pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fourth save. It would be the lowest ERA in all of Minor League Baseball if he had enough innings to qualify. Lopez has only allowed one earned run in 37 and two-thirds innings of work, and his last six innings were scoreless in a winning effort against Mississippi on May 24. Lopez so far this season has not allowed a run at the Baseball Grounds, working 15 and two-thirds scoreless innings at this park. Lopez is Miami’s No. 21 prospect according to MLB.com, and is a member of the Miami 40-man roster. Jagielo RBI Machine: Jacksonville first baseman Eric Jagielo has been an RBI machine over the past nine games. In that time, he has driven in 13 runs for the Jumbo Shrimp, which leads the Southern League and is tied for the Double-A lead for RBI during the May 19-29 timespan. Jagielo now leads the Jumbo Shrimp with 33 RBI this season, which is third most in the Southern League and just five RBI behind Montgomery’s Brandon Loww for the league lead (38). Jagielo has had three multi-RBI games in a row for Jacksonville, and five of his last seven games are multi-RBI contests. Norwood Streaking: Jumbo Shrimp right fielder John Norwood is having a hot stretch at the plate, having his safely in his last nine games for the Jumbo Shrimp. In his hitting streak, Norwood is hitting .367 (11-for-30) with six runs batted in and five runs scored. Norwood is approaching his longest hitting streak of the season, when he hit safely in 11 games from April 9-22, which was tied for the longest hitting streak for a Shrimp batter in 2018. The league’s longest hitting streak so far this season is 15 games, belonging to Birmingham’s Eloy Jimenez from April 26 to May 11. Florida’s AA Baseball Rivalry is BACK: This is the second series this season between the Jumbo Shrimp and their in-state rivals, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. This is the final trip for the Blue Wahoos to Jacksonville in 2018, and earlier this season Jacksonville enjoyed a dominant homestand by winning four of five games against Pensacola from April 26-30. The Jumbo Shrimp will make two trips to Pensacola in the second half, facing the Blue Wahoos from July 18-22, and August 14- 18 at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Last year the Jumbo Shrimp went 7-13 against the Wahoos, yet split the 10 meetings 5-5 at the Baseball Grounds. Pensacola won the first half South Division title, while Jacksonville took the second half South Division crown, and the clubs met in the Southern League playoffs, with all games played in Pensacola due to Hurricane Irma. The Wahoos swept the South Division Championship Series 3-0 to earn a share of the Southern League title with Chattanooga. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have five players who were listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (1), Isan Diaz (7), RHP Nick Neidert (8), RHP Pablo Lopez (21), and John Norwood (30). The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, December 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe MLB Draft League launching wooden-bat league for top draft prospects Matthew Doherty Major League Baseball is launching a wooden-bat league for top prospects who are eligible for the MLB Draft, it announced Monday. The MLB Draft League, which will be operated by the scouting service Prep Baseball Report, has five member teams and is discussing adding a sixth team in the coming weeks. Teams will play a 68-game regular season from late May to mid-August, split into two parts. The first half of the season will showcase the draft-eligible high school, college, and junior college players. After an All-Star break centered around the MLB Draft (July 11-13), teams will restock their rosters with the top undrafted players for the second half of the season. Paul Toboni, the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Red Sox, said he’s unsure whether top prospects will choose to play in the MLB Draft League. The pandemic’s effect on the spring season will also play a factor, according to Toboni. “I think it’s too early to tell,” said Toboni. “It’s tough to predict the caliber of prospect that will choose to play in this league. And I’m stating the obvious here, but how the pandemic affects spring seasons will ultimately have an impact on prospects’ willingness to play as well.” The college baseball regular season ends in mid-May and the College World Series is scheduled from June 19 - June 30 this season.
