The Strip: Las Vegas and the Symbolic Destruction of Spectacle By Stefan Johannes Al A dissertation submitted in the partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Nezar AlSayyad, Chair Professor Greig Crysler Professor Ananya Roy Professor Michael Southworth Fall 2010 The Strip: Las Vegas and the Symbolic Destruction of Spectacle © 2010 by Stefan Johannes Al Abstract The Strip: Las Vegas and the Symbolic Destruction of Spectacle by Stefan Johannes Al Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning University of California, Berkeley Professor Nezar AlSayyad, Chair Over the past 70 years, various actors have dramatically reconfigured the Las Vegas Strip in many forms. I claim that behind the Strip’s “reinventions” lies a process of symbolic destruction. Since resorts distinguish themselves symbolically, each new round of capital accumulation relies on the destruction of symbolic capital of existing resorts. A new resort either ups the language within a paradigm, or causes a paradigm shift, which devalues the previous resorts even further. This is why, in the context of the Strip, buildings have such a short lifespan. This dissertation is chronologically structured around the four building booms of new resort construction that occurred on the Strip. Historically, there are periodic waves of new casino resort constructions with continuous upgrades and renovation projects in between. They have been successively theorized as suburbanization, corporatization, Disneyfication, and global branding. Each building boom either conforms to a single paradigm or witnesses a paradigm shift halfway: these paradigms have been theorized as Wild West, Los Angeles Cool, Pop City, Corporate Modern, Disneyland, Sim City, and Starchitecture.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- January-March 2010 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prologue Welcome to La Costa’s all new Members Only quarterly newsletter, The Legend. It illustrates the rich history and tradition that has been an integral part of La Costa since its inception in 1965. It symbolizes the key to discovering the legendary lifestyle that The Club at La Costa has to offer its Members. Discover La Costa-discover the legend. Echoes from Our Past… The La Costa Legend Even before the idea for La Costa was realized, the resort was destined for greatness and heralded as “the ultimate international watering hole.” Nestled among the breathtaking Southern California Carlsbad foothills, the 400-acre estate abounds with both natural and manmade splendor. In the early years, La Costa offered Members, guests, and residents an unparalleled lifestyle complete with golf, tennis, spa, dining, pool, Saddle Club and riding trails, and an impressive social calendar. It came as no surprise that the resort’s guest register read like a “Who’s Who” of Hollywood. Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, and Bing Crosby sought out the lifestyle that Membership at The Club at La Costa had to offer. The perfect San Diego weather lured famous leisure golfers such as Clint Eastwood and Desi Arnaz, and tennis- playing stars such as Charleton Heston, Johnny Carson, Bill Cosby, Dustin Hoffman, and John Belushi. The world-famous La Costa Spa attracted notable guests from Jackie Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and Sugar Ray Leonard to the Queen of Iran. In La Costa’s more recent past, its two championship Dick Wilson golf courses have attracted some of history’s professional golf legends including Sam Snead, Ray Floyd, Arnold Palmer, Bobby Nichols, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods.

THE ORAL HISTORY OF JAN JONES BLACKHURST (DO NOT DELETE) 11/22/2017 11:33 AM THE ORAL HISTORY OF JAN JONES BLACKHURST Jan Jones Blackhurst served as the first female mayor of Las Vegas from 1991 to 1999. Following her second term as mayor, she joined Caesars Entertainment, where she created the casino industry’s first regulatory practices for problem gaming. Today, Jones Blackhurst continues to make a lasting impact on Las Vegas and its gaming industry as Caesar Entertainment’s Executive Vice President of Public Policy and Corporate Responsibility. _________________________________________________ I. EARLY LIFE Where were you born and how did you end up in Nevada? I was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Santa Monica. I went to Franklin Elementary and then Lincoln Junior High School, but ended up at the Marlborough School for girls for ninth through twelfth. I graduated in a class of sixty-seven and in that class, there were fifteen of us who were accepted to Stanford, which is extraordinary. I then moved to Northern California, where I stayed for almost eight years and graduated from Stanford in 1972. My husband was in law school, so we stayed up there, but later moved back to Southern California. I wanted to go to USC’s business school, and my father who was the CEO of Thriftimart super markets, which was a company that we controlled along with Smart and Final, said to me “Well, why would you want to do that? Why don’t you come and work for me? I’ll teach you everything there is to know about business from an entirely different perspective.” I said, “Okay,” and I went to work for Thriftimart.
